Halting Childhood Obesity In Connecticut, Luce Buhl, Pamela Meliso, Susan Roman, Katie Zito, Laurie Dechello

UCHC Graduate School Presentations

The Practicum Project is a supervised service-learning experience that integrates curriculum with hands-on experience in a public health setting. All 2nd year students are expected to work collaboratively in assessing the extent, causes and public health responses to a selected public health problem confronting citizens of Connecticut. The focal topic for the 2005 Project was Control of Childhood Obesity in Connecticut.

During this past spring, 25 students of our program, working alongside and in partnership with more than 130 community-based stakeholders across Connecticut, completed 2,083 hours of service-learning in pursuit of answers to 3 questions:

Can the present and future …

Correspondences Between Regression Models For Complex Binary Outcomes And Those For Structured Multivariate Survival Analyses, Nicholas P. Jewell Nov 2005

Correspondences Between Regression Models For Complex Binary Outcomes And Those For Structured Multivariate Survival Analyses, Nicholas P. Jewell

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Doksum and Gasko [5] described a one-to-one correspondence between regression models for binary outcomes and those for continuous time survival analyses. This correspondence has been exploited heavily in the analysis of current status data (Jewell and van der Laan [11], Shiboski [18]). Here, we explore similar correspondences for complex survival models and categorical regression models for polytomous data. We include discussion of competing risks and progressive multi-state survival random variables.

Application Of A Variable Importance Measure Method To Hiv-1 Sequence Data, Merrill D. Birkner, Mark J. Van Der Laan Nov 2005

Application Of A Variable Importance Measure Method To Hiv-1 Sequence Data, Merrill D. Birkner, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

van der Laan (2005) proposed a method to construct variable importance measures and provided the respective statistical inference. This technique involves determining the importance of a variable in predicting an outcome. This method can be applied as an inverse probability of treatment weighted (IPTW) or double robust inverse probability of treatment weighted (DR-IPTW) estimator. A respective significance of the estimator is determined by estimating the influence curve and hence determining the corresponding variance and p-value. This article applies the van der Laan (2005) variable importance measures and corresponding inference to HIV-1 sequence data. In this data application, protease and reverse …

Thyroid Doses And Risk Of Thyroid Cancer For Members Of Public Exposed To I-131, Radiochemical Health Effects Archives, Senes Oak Ridge, Inc.

Radiochemical Health Effects Archives

The purpose of this report is to estimate radiation doses to the thyroid gland and risk of thyroid cancer incidence for individuals exposed to I-131 in fallout from nuclear weapons tested at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) and in releases from different nuclear facilities operated in the United States. Estimates are produced for individuals living around Oak Ridge, Tennessee, who were exposed both to I-131 from NTS fallout and to I-131 released from the X-10 nuclear facility; for individuals living around Hanford, Washington, who were exposed both to I-131 from NTS fallout and to I-131 released from the Hanford facility; …

The Anchor, Volume 119.10: November 16, 2005, Hope College

The Anchor: 2005

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

At elevated levels, homocysteine (Hcy, 1) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, neural tube defects, and osteoporosis. Both 1 and cysteine (Cys, 3) are linked to neurotoxicity. The biochemical mechanisms by which 1 and 3 are involved in disease states are relatively unclear. Herein, we describe simple methods for detecting either Hey or Cys in the visible spectral region with the highest selectivity reported to date without using biochemical techniques or preparative separations. Simple methods and readily available reagents allow for the detection of Cys and Hey in the range of their physiologically relevant levels. New HPLC …

Coddling Spies: Why The Law Doesn’T Adequately Address Computer Spyware, Alan F. Blakley, Daniel B. Garrie, Matthew J. Armstrong Nov 2005

Coddling Spies: Why The Law Doesn’T Adequately Address Computer Spyware, Alan F. Blakley, Daniel B. Garrie, Matthew J. Armstrong

Duke Law & Technology Review

Consumers and businesses have attempted to use the common law of torts as well as federal statutes like the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Stored Wire and Electronic Communications and Transactional Records Act, and the Wiretap Act to address the expanding problem of spyware. Spyware, which consists of software applications inserted into another's computer to report a user's activity to an outsider, is as innocuous as tracking purchases or as sinister as stealing trade secrets or an individual's identity. Existing law does not address spyware adequately because authorization language, buried in "click-through" boilerplate, renders much of current law useless. …

Seeing Straight In The Workplace: An Examination Of Sexual Orientation Discrimination In Public Employment In The Aftermath Of Lawrence V. Texas, Devin A. Cohen Nov 2005

Seeing Straight In The Workplace: An Examination Of Sexual Orientation Discrimination In Public Employment In The Aftermath Of Lawrence V. Texas, Devin A. Cohen

ExpressO

Title VII does not explicitly protect homosexual employees from sexual orientation discrimination and the courts have generally refused to bootstrap sexual orientation discrimination into Title VII as a form of gender discrimination. Therefore, homosexual employees have had to depend on their constitutional rights to protect them from their public employers’ sexual orientation discrimination. Traditionally, the courts have allowed public employers to discriminate against homosexual employees so long as the employers’ reasons were rationally related to legitimate business purposes.

I argue that the Supreme Court’s reasoning in Lawrence v. Texas forces future courts to question the reasonableness of employers’ rational bases. …
