The Voice: 2001-2011

Two students report being assailed by two men in a truck. The men eventually left the truck and started chasing the students on foot. The men then went back to their truck and began to chase a third student, who was a friend of the other two and who had been attempting to help them. The college mourns the death of Dr. Theodore Roosevelt Williams, a retired chemistry professor. The international student association hosts a "culture show" as part of international events week.

Working With Your Whole Campus To Create An Institutional Repository, Jane Costanza, Beatrice L. Caraway

Library Faculty Research

This session demonstrates various uses of an institutional repository: showcasing student work, archiving images from student theatrical productions, scanning and archiving the student newspaper, and providing campus-wide access to the university s policies, for example. Such projects respond to and shape the changing role of paraprofessionals in the library, but success requires collaboration with other campus units.

Measuring The Expression Of Hypovirulence In A Segregating Population Of Bc2f2 Castanea Dentata Hybrids, Lisa Michelle Worthen Nov 2005

Measuring The Expression Of Hypovirulence In A Segregating Population Of Bc2f2 Castanea Dentata Hybrids, Lisa Michelle Worthen

Honors Theses

The American chestnut tree (Castanea dentata) was reduced from an important canopy hardwood to an understory shrub by the chestnut blight fungus (Cryphonectria parasitica). Hypovirulence, a phenomenon whereby Cryphonectria parasitica is weakened in its ability to incite chestnut blight, is caused by doublestranded RNA (dsRNA) molecules of viral origin in the cytoplasm of the fungus.Hypovirulence serves as a biological control of C. parasitica in Europe and small, isolated areas in North America, but has not been an effective, widespread biological control in North America. It has been hypothesized that the moderately higher levels of host resistance of the European chestnut …

A Provacative Test To Determine Brain Compliance In The Management Of Patients With Hydrocephalus, Preston K. Manwaring Nov 2005

A Provacative Test To Determine Brain Compliance In The Management Of Patients With Hydrocephalus, Preston K. Manwaring

Theses and Dissertations

Non-invasive techniques to explore intracranial compliance and pressure have been extensively explored in recent years. Previous techniques have used expensive technologies to make these measurements, often with difficulty. We present a novel, inexpensive provocative test to observe trends in intracranial compliance measurement targeted towards the treatment and management of hydrocephalus. Two techniques are proposed which derive data from the digital and supraorbital arteries as well as tympanic membrane displacement. This requires the use of two photo-plethysmographic sensors and a TMD sensor. A common tilt table apparatus is used to methodically and artificially increase intracranial pressure to stress the cranial system …

Loss Of Editing Activity During The Evolution Of Mitochondrial Phenylalanyl-Trna Synthetase, Hervé Roy, Jiqiang Ling, Juan D. Alfonzo, Michael Ibba Nov 2005

Loss Of Editing Activity During The Evolution Of Mitochondrial Phenylalanyl-Trna Synthetase, Hervé Roy, Jiqiang Ling, Juan D. Alfonzo, Michael Ibba

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Accurate selection of amino acids is essential for faithful translation of the genetic code. Errors during amino acid selection are usually corrected by the editing activity of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases such as phenylalanyl-tRNA synthetases (PheRS), which edit misactivated tyrosine. Comparison of cytosolic and mitochondrial PheRS from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae suggested that the organellar protein might lack the editing activity. Yeast cytosolic PheRS was found to contain an editing site, which upon disruption abolished both cis and trans editing of Tyr-tRNAPhe. Wild-type mitochondrial PheRS lacked cis and trans editing and could synthesize Tyr-tRNAPhe, an activity enhanced in …

Occupational Exposure To Ultrafine Particles And Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons From Candle Emissions, David J. Silver Nov 2005

Occupational Exposure To Ultrafine Particles And Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons From Candle Emissions, David J. Silver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ultrafine particles (UFPs) are present in the ambient atmosphere and are generated from atmospheric gases, pollution sources, and combustion. Candles emit carbonaceous soot particles similar to UFPs present in the ambient atmosphere. With the exception of lead, airborne concentrations of candle emissions have not been shown capable of causing cancer or cardiopulmonary disease during normal use. The purpose of this research is to determine the occupational risk associated with candle emissions.

Candle studies employ chambers to measure candle emission exposures and assess public health risk. Chambers used in previous studies did not match normal room conditions. They were affected by …

Nonparametric Estimation Of Bivariate Failure Time Associations In The Presence Of A Competing Risk, Karen Bandeen-Roche, Jing Ning Nov 2005

Nonparametric Estimation Of Bivariate Failure Time Associations In The Presence Of A Competing Risk, Karen Bandeen-Roche, Jing Ning

Johns Hopkins University, Dept. of Biostatistics Working Papers

There has been much research on the study of associations among paired failure times. Most has either assumed time invariance of association or been based on complex measures or estimators. Little has accommodated failures arising amid competing risks. This paper targets the conditional cause specific hazard ratio, a recent modification of the conditional hazard ratio to accommodate competing risks data. Estimation is accomplished by an intuitive, nonparametric method that localizes Kendall’s tau. Time variance is accommodated through a partitioning of space into “bins” between which the strength of association may differ. Inferential procedures are researched, small sample performance evaluated, and …

Longitudinal Course Of Eating Disorder Risk Among Undergraduate Females At Brigham Young University, Erin Blue Winters Nov 2005

Longitudinal Course Of Eating Disorder Risk Among Undergraduate Females At Brigham Young University, Erin Blue Winters

Theses and Dissertations

This research study examined the prevalence rates and longitudinal course of eating disorder risk among undergraduate females at BYU, and compared the identified prevalence rates at BYU with identified rates at other colleges and universities. Almost 2,000 undergraduate females, in three cohort groups, filled out the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT) once a semester for four to eight semesters. Clinical cut-off scores were used to determine what percentage of participants were at high risk for eating disordered behaviors and symptomology. Overall eating disorder risk prevalence rates at BYU ranged from 9-11%. These rates were significantly lower than identified rates at other …
