Foreign Migration To The Cleveland-Akron-Lorain Metropolitan Area From 1995 To 2000, Mark Salling, Ellen Cyran

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

This report is one of a series on migration to and from the region using the five percent Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) of the 2000 Census of Population and Housing and provides a description of foreign migrants moving to the Cleveland-Akron-Lorain (CAL) Consolidated Metropolitan Area (CMSA) from 1995 to 2000.* The report identifies the countries of origin of migrants and compares the demographic, socioeconomic, and housing characteristics of the foreign migrants to the CAL with other groups, including foreign migrants to Ohio and the nation, and, at times, to domestic migrants to and from the CAL.

Review Of Ground-Water Monitoring Well Sampling Techniques, The Ph "Issue", And The Wells Abandoned And Sealed, Concerned Citizens Of Lake Township, Julie Weatherington-Rice Ph.D., Linda Aller

Concerned Citizens of Lake Township (CCLT)

At the request of the Concerned Citizens for Lake Township (CCLT), Bennett & Williams, Environmental Consultants, Inc. were asked to again revisit the Uniontown Industrial Excess Landfill (IEL) Superfund site, located in Uniontown, Ohio. Bennett & Williams (B&W) first began evaluating this site in the early 1990s, has been involved in three court actions concerning the site, and drafted the Lake Township Comments on the Existing Public Record (1999) which was submitted on behalf of the Township to the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Bennett & Williams were also asked to review the "Low Flow" sampling techniques undertaken at …

Bayesian Analysis Of Cell-Cycle Gene Expression Data, Chuan Zhou, Jon Wakefield, Linda Breeden Dec 2005

Bayesian Analysis Of Cell-Cycle Gene Expression Data, Chuan Zhou, Jon Wakefield, Linda Breeden

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The study of the cell-cycle is important in order to aid in our understanding of the basic mechanisms of life, yet progress has been slow due to the complexity of the process and our lack of ability to study it at high resolution. Recent advances in microarray technology have enabled scientists to study the gene expression at the genome-scale with a manageable cost, and there has been an increasing effort to identify cell-cycle regulated genes. In this chapter, we discuss the analysis of cell-cycle gene expression data, focusing on a model-based Bayesian approaches. The majority of the models we describe …

Mandated Training: Program Proposed For Local Decision-Makers, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher Dec 2005

Mandated Training: Program Proposed For Local Decision-Makers, John R. Nolon, Jessica A. Bacher

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

Local land use boards, made up of volunteers from the community, decide a majority of the land use issues in New York’s municipalities, as well as most other states. In the past, these decision makers were not required to obtain formal training. Now, several states and municipalities are recognize the substantial impact of land use board decisions, and as a consequence, are providing innovative training for their board members. Land use law becomes more complicated with each passing hour, and through proper training, land use board members can become informed decision makers who maximize the potential of their communities.

Mass Spectrometry Assisted Assignment Of Nmr Resonances In Reductively 13C-Methylated Proteins, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Austin M. Kane, James H. Prestegard Dec 2005

Mass Spectrometry Assisted Assignment Of Nmr Resonances In Reductively 13C-Methylated Proteins, Megan A. Macnaughtan, Austin M. Kane, James H. Prestegard

Faculty Publications

Reductive 13C-methylation of proteins has been used as an isotope labeling strategy to study protein structure, function, and dynamics by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. However, assigning the resulting 13C-dimethylamine peaks in a 1H-13C NMR spectrum has proved to be difficult, but it is important to expand the scope of the method. The assignment strategy presented here utilizes mass spectrometry (MS) for sequence identification and varying 13C/12C isotope ratios to correlate with NMR data. The site-specific reactivity of the lysines and N-terminal amine of a protein is exploited to produce a sample with varying 13C/12C ratios at each dimethylamine. MS …

Extending Predation Analysis To Monopolist's Bundled Discounts Under Section 2: An Economic, Legal, And Comparative Perspective, Seth B. Chertok Dec 2005

Extending Predation Analysis To Monopolist's Bundled Discounts Under Section 2: An Economic, Legal, And Comparative Perspective, Seth B. Chertok

ExpressO

In LePage’s v. 3M, the Third Circuit decided the first case at the federal appellate court level that dealt with the subject of bundled discounts by a monopolist under Section 2 of the Sherman Act in the period following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Brooke Group Ltd. v. Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation. Prior to the decision in Brooke Group, the Third Circuit had only once before addressed this topic in Smithkline Corp. v. Eli Lilly and Company. Smithkline is only significant because it nearly suggested that any bundled discount, regardless of whether above or below cost, was anti-competitive. …

A Hybrid Model For Reducing Ecological Bias, Ruth Salway, Jon Wakefield Dec 2005

A Hybrid Model For Reducing Ecological Bias, Ruth Salway, Jon Wakefield

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

A major drawback of epidemiological ecological studies, in which the association between area-level summaries of risk and exposure are used to make inference about individual risk, is the difficulty in characterising within-area variability in exposure and confounder variables. To avoid ecological bias, samples of individual exposure/confounder data within each area are required. Unfortunately these may be difficult or expensive to obtain, particularly if large samples are required. In this paper we propose a new approach suitable for use with small samples. We combine a Bayesian non-parametric Dirichlet process prior with an estimating functions approach, and show that this model gives …

A Preliminary Investigation Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As A Treatment For Chronic Skin Picking, Michael P. Twohig, Steven C. Hayes, Akihiko Masuda Dec 2005

A Preliminary Investigation Of Acceptance And Commitment Therapy As A Treatment For Chronic Skin Picking, Michael P. Twohig, Steven C. Hayes, Akihiko Masuda

Psychology Faculty Publications

The effectiveness of a deliberately limited version of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for chronic skin picking was evaluated in a pair of multiple baseline across participants designs. Self-monitoring of skin picking showed that four of the five participants reached near zero levels of picking by post-treatment, but these gains were not fully maintained for three of the four participants at follow-up. The findings of the self-reported skin picking were generally corroborated by ratings of photographs of the damaged areas and by ratings on a validated measure of skin picking severity. All participants rated the intervention as socially acceptable, and …
