Rural Land-Use Trends In The Conterminous United States, 1950-2000., Kenneth M. Johnson, Daniel G. Brown, Thomas R. Loveland, David M. Theobald
Sociology
In order to understand the magnitude, direction, and geographic distribution of land-use changes, we evaluated land-use trends in U.S. counties during the latter half of the 20th century. Our paper synthesizes the dominant spatial and temporal trends in population, agriculture, and urbanized land uses, using a variety of data sources and an ecoregion classification as a frame of reference. A combination of increasing attractiveness of nonmetropolitan areas in the period 1970–2000, decreasing household size, and decreasing density of settlement has resulted in important trends in the patterns of developed land. By 2000, the area of low-density, exurban development beyond the …

Building Economic Self-Reliance: Trickle Up's Microenterprise Seed Capital For The Extreme Poor In Rural India, Jan Maes, Malika Basu
Building Economic Self-Reliance: Trickle Up's Microenterprise Seed Capital For The Extreme Poor In Rural India, Jan Maes, Malika Basu
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
The Trickle Up Program is a US-based organization engaged in microenterprise development for very poor households in 14 core countries, including India. Because it targets the most vulnerable sections of the population, such as the rural landless, women-led households, people with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged minorities, TUP employs a seed capital grant strategy to facilitate its clients' movement from absolute poverty toward economic self-reliance. TUP clients cannot risk taking a loan because they have no spare income to make payments if their enterprises do not generate an immediate profit. A conditional grant, in contrast to credit, exposes its recipients to …
The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick
The Relationship Between Meteorological Patterns And Rural Ground Ozone Concentration, Dasen Kendrick
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Throughout the United States, many areas exceed the level of safe ground ozone (O3) concentration. Non-natural emissions made as result of daily human activities and natural emissions react photochemically to produce ground O3 concentration. Variation in ground O3 concentration is controlled by local and regional emissions, synoptic and mesoscale meteorology, and boundary layer chemistry and dynamics. When the right meteorological variables are present, rural areas can have unhealthy air conditions with high levels of ground O3 concentration similar to that of metropolitan areas. Particular ground O3 concentration episodes were analyzed to summarize what meteorological variables constitute a healthy or hazardous …
This essay explores how some “Maghrebian” novelists represent and problematize their relation to “Maghrebness” or “maghrebinité”. Using postcolonial theory and Réda Bensmaia's Alger ou La maladie de la mémoire, the author shows how problematic the concept of “Maghrebian literature” can be when one considers its transnational and transcultural poetics and its de-territorialization.

Foreign Investment And Disparities In Economic Development And Poverty Reduction: A Comparative-Historical Analysis Of The Buddhist Countries Of Southeast Asia, Harold Kerbo
Social Sciences
To remain economically competitive in the 21st century a nation must be able to secure resources beyond its borders and protect itself from other nations trying to do the same. While the situation has been shown to be more complex, the original assumption among world system researchers remains that multinational corporate penetration in the periphery can have negative effects on their prospects for economic development. But we now know that these negative effects upon long-term economic development can be prevented. The existence of a strong development state can be critical for this protection. In addition to supplying ‘good governance’ (as …

Soil Carbon Distribution And Quality In A Montane Rangeland Forest Mosaic In Northern Utah, Helga Van Miegrot, Janis L. Boettinger, Michelle A. Baker, Julia Nielson, Dave Evans, Alex Stum
T.W. "Doc" Daniel Experimental Forest
Relatively little is known about soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics in montane ecosystems of the semi-arid western U.S. or the stability of current SOC pools under future climate change scenarios. We measured the distribution and quality of SOC in a mosaic of rangeland-forest vegetation types that occurs under similar climatic conditions on non-calcareous soils at Utah State University’s T.W. Daniel Experimental Forest in northern Utah: the forest types were aspen [Populus tremuloides] and conifer (mixture of fir [Abies lasiocarpa] and spruce [Picea engelmannii]); the rangeland types were sagebrush steppe [Artemisia tridentata], grass-forb meadow, and a meadow-conifer ecotone. Total SOC was …

An Analysis Of Industrial Characteristics And Incentives On Foreign Investment: The Case Of Rapid Economic Growth In Taiwan, Jo-Hui Chen
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
This study measured the impacts of the industrial characteristics and the fiscal incentives that influenced foreign direct investment. We used the fixed effect model with a 2SLS simultaneous equation for the period of rapid economic growth from 1980 to 1996 across nine industries is Taiwan. We found that the wage and market size are positively correlated with foreign national investors, while exports are negatively correlated with overseas Chinese investors. The results also indicated that the tax holiday and the statute for the promotion of upgrading industries affect foreign national investors positively, but that R&D tax credits are ineffective. The relatively …

La Poétique Transgénérique De L’Oeil Et La Nuit D’Abdellatif Laâbi : Du Théâtral Au Filmique Dans Un Roman-Poème, Lucia Trifu
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The study proposes a re-reading, a new interpretation of the novel-poetry work L’oeil et la nuit by Moroccan writer Abdellatif Laâbi. In this literary text, the borders of writing are dismantled and new affinities are revealed between writing, performance, theatre and film; all of which aim to redefine the postcolonial

L’Intertextualité Géopolitique Dans Le Petit Chat Est Mort De Fejria Deliba, Sarah B. Buchanan
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
In this article, Buchanan examines how Fejria Deliba’s short film, Le petit chat est mort, questions the ideas that conservative members of North African and French communities mobilize to separate themselves from each other. Using theories of intertextuality and geopolitical conscience, Buchanan illustrates how “imagined communities” are always influenced by other national narrations, and how “home” is never isolated, pure or preserved. On the contrary, Buchanan highlights how Deliba presents the French and North African cultures as spaces of intersection and interface, that is, of intertext.

Quelques Remarques Sur Les Belgicismes Métalinguistiques, Jean-Nicolas De Surmont
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
Of all Belgicisms, only a few have metalinguistic connotation and they have to be considered of special interest in this respect, even if the literature on French in Belgium has not addressed this issue specifically. This essay proposes some observations on these few important words, supported by recent lexicographical descriptions and data obtained through research undertaken in collaboration with Michel Francard of the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium).

Spatial Autocorrelation Of Deer-Vehicle Accidents In Vigo County, J. Scott Horn
Spatial Autocorrelation Of Deer-Vehicle Accidents In Vigo County, J. Scott Horn
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Deer-vehicle accidents (DV As) are a problem in many areas. They cause millions of dollars in property damage, personal injury, and loss of life each year. This thesis examines whether DVAs in Vigo County, Indiana during the year 2000 were spatially autocorrelated; and whether DV As selected by deer habitat were spatially autocorrelated. Specifically using Moran's I to test for spatial autocorrelation this study determined if and to what degree spatial autocorrelation existed among these DVAs. A Moran's I value of .0023 shows that the accidents occurred randomly. These DV A data were then used to plot a map which …

Biomass Estimation Using Statistical And Neural Network Analysis Of Aster Data, Vijay O. Lulla
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study assessed the performance of different biomass estimation methods using Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) lll data in a temperate forest. Multiple linear regression statistics of spectral band data and derived indices with biomass values were compared with advanced neural network models created with spectral band data and indices to model biomass values. Biomass for the study area was estimated using both of these methods and the results were discussed. The data were analyzed using multivariate statistical analysis. Correlation analysis and regression analysis were employed to understand the relationship of biomass to the spectral data and …

Foraminiferal Faunas Of The Southern California Bight: A Temporal And Spatial Comparison Of Assemblages In The >150, 63-150, And >63 Μm Fractions, Amanda S. Shepard
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Analyses ofliving (Rose Bengal stained) deep-sea benthic foraminifera collected on the Southern California margin reveal temporal and spatial changes in foraminiferal assemblages related to changes in sea-surface productivity. Samples were collected from two sites in May, August, and October 1996. Results show that foraminiferal microhabitats are not static at these sites, and some species ( e.g., Bolivina spissa and Uvigerina peregrina) responded to the change in seasons with a change in their vertical distribution profiles, which is indicative of microhabitat preferences. Species such as Buliminella tenuata changed sediment depth in different stages of their life cycles, which has implications for …

Internet Usage And Information Seeking Behaviour Of Students Conducting History Projects: Determining The Need Of A Digital Library For Historical Resources, Abdullah Abrizah, Awang Ngah Zainab
Research Publications (2000 to 2005)
This paper reports the results of a user study done at the formative stage of development of a collaborative resource development (CoreDev) digital library for Malaysian historical resources by collaborating partners. CoreDev aims to provide an electronic system to help students obtain information on local history; collect, store and organize information in digital format; publish and share electronic resources. While most digital library projects were driven, by technology development and research, there has been little investigation into how to develop a creative, working community around a digital library. This paper presents preliminary findings on students' readiness and receptivity to participate …
