The Handmaid’S Tale Of Fertility Tourism: Passports And Third Parties In The Religious Regulation Of Assisted Conception, Richard F. Storrow Oct 2005

The Handmaid’S Tale Of Fertility Tourism: Passports And Third Parties In The Religious Regulation Of Assisted Conception, Richard F. Storrow

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Infertility is a devastating global malady triggering worldwide demand for a vast array of reproduction assisting technologies. Infertility is particularly devastating in "pronatalist" societies marked by high rates of infertility and large disparities in access to medical services. Poverty in particular impedes large segments of the population in pronatalist Third World countries from gaining access even to very basic techniques of infertility treatment and consigns them to ineffective traditional remedies. In this Article drawing on both ethnographic work on infertility in the Third World and on Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Professor Storrow examines two starkly class-stratified societies where reproduction …

Europe: A Civilization On The Edge, Peter O'Brien Oct 2005

Europe: A Civilization On The Edge, Peter O'Brien

Political Science Faculty Research

Our European culture is one that has staked its all on the universal and the danger menacing it is that of perishing by the universal.
Jean Baudrillard1

Rémi Brague rejects common charges of Eurocentrisim leveled against Western civilization. He prefers to characterize the West as "eccentric," meaning off center. He equates Western civilization with Europe and understands it as that civilization which grew out of the western half of the Roman Empire and with time differentiated itself from Byzantine and Islamic civilizations (themselves successors to the Roman heritage). He labels Europe eccentric because it stands (physically and figuratively) on …

Documenting Queer Community Histories: Whose History Is It?, Jessica Stern, Nicholas Ray Oct 2005

Documenting Queer Community Histories: Whose History Is It?, Jessica Stern, Nicholas Ray

Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)

What does it mean to be a member of a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) community? When did LGBTQ community history begin? Where do queer communities differ? How do we broach these questions to document communities' experiences? And significantly, why is it important to document the histories of those who are defined as LGBTQ?

Literature Survey, Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, John Redhouse Oct 2005

Literature Survey, Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment, John Redhouse

Diné Citizens Against Ruining Our Environment

Literature survey relating to the record of decision approving the license for the White Mesa Mill, the only fully-licensed and operating conventional uranium mill in the United States. Besides inadequate environmental impact statements and even more inadequate environmental assessments leading up to this decision, there exists a dearth of independent technical and scientific information related to the radiological effects of the White Mesa Mill. Also sadly lacking in the mill licensing and license amendment process was and is the existence of sound ethnographic data documenting the significance of the uranium mill's impacts on Navajo cultural resources. However in the absence …

Touristic Transcendence And Post Modern Flitting: An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Second Home Owners, Deirdre Quinn, Darach Turley Oct 2005

Touristic Transcendence And Post Modern Flitting: An Exploration Of The Experiences Of Second Home Owners, Deirdre Quinn, Darach Turley

Articles

The focus of this article is the experience of the tourist as s/he moves between ordinary everyday non-tourist life and tourist life in the current postmodern consumption context.

A comprehensive review of the existing literature on second home consumption is presented. There is some emphasis on how it is practised by the Irish second home owner. This is a group that has been identified as being relatively under-researched in a consumer behaviour context; it is a group thst is affluent, growing and heterogeneous (Mottiar and Quinn 2003).

The vacation home is a complex issue within tourism being viewed as 'a …

Prediction Of Sediment-Bound Nutrient Delivery From Semi-Arid California Watersheds, Emmanuel Gabet, Noah Fierer, Oliver Chadwick Oct 2005

Prediction Of Sediment-Bound Nutrient Delivery From Semi-Arid California Watersheds, Emmanuel Gabet, Noah Fierer, Oliver Chadwick

Faculty Publications

Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) are lost from hillslopes in particulate forms through soil erosion. The fate of the eroded C (e.g., sequestration or oxidation) may affect the global C budget, and delivery of N and P to waterbodies can lead to eutrophication. Whereas the magnitude of particulate nutrient losses may be similar to or greater than dissolved losses, it is rarely estimated. We couple a sediment delivery model with measurements of C, N, and P in soil to account explicitly for hillslope sediment transport processes that yield sediment-bound nutrients to fluvial networks. The model is applied …

The Role Of Tibetan Buddhism And Culture In Sustainable Development (A Case Study Of Yubeng Village), Frazer Lanier Oct 2005

The Role Of Tibetan Buddhism And Culture In Sustainable Development (A Case Study Of Yubeng Village), Frazer Lanier

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

During a lecture by Li Bo, of CBIK (the Center for Biodiversity and Indigenous Knowledge a Chinese NGO), I was given a glimpse into the role that culture plays within poverty alleviation and environmental conservation. While poverty alleviation aims to develop community economies, this goal is usually seen as being in conflict with environmental conservation because it requires the use of environmental resources. This is a common misperception. According to Gou Jing’s article Gateway between Culture and Nature, “man’s touch bestows nature with culture” (Guo Jing 12). The interaction between nature and humans is the foundation for culture and the …

The Road To Recovery: Economic And Social Development In Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Erinn Lachner Oct 2005

The Road To Recovery: Economic And Social Development In Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Erinn Lachner

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina is recreating itself. This municipality, located in the Republic of Srpska, is the setting of the 1995 genocide, which murdered 8,000 Muslim men and boys. Destroyed by the war, this municipality is rebuilding its economy, infrastructure and civil society from scratch. Srebrenica has made a large amount of progress in the past ten years, with the help of international and local donors. These donors have contributed millions of dollars to the effort. However, Srebrenica still faces many obstacles, namely, high unemployment, lack of physical infrastructure and poor attention to social welfare. While slow, progress is made everyday in …

Connexions: Models For Creative Collaboration Between Church And Academy In The Twenty-First Century, Anthony L. Blair Oct 2005

Connexions: Models For Creative Collaboration Between Church And Academy In The Twenty-First Century, Anthony L. Blair

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the historic relationship between church and academy (defined as Christian higher education). Although certain external forces, including the decline in denominational identity, the power of market forces, and the growing philosophical/theological tensions between the lectern and the pulpit, have driven the academy and the church apart in recent decades, the claim of this study is that these same forces can be harnessed to draw them together in a more collaborative relationship in the twenty-first century.

Chapter One delineates the scope and nature of Christian higher education in North America, through both a …
