Geospatial Analysis Of Gravel Bar Deposition And Channel Migration Within The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri (1955-2003), Derek J. Martin Jan 2005

Geospatial Analysis Of Gravel Bar Deposition And Channel Migration Within The Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Missouri (1955-2003), Derek J. Martin

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Historical land clearing is believed to be responsible for present-day channel instability in main stem reaches in the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR) in south-central Missouri. The nature of instability is related to the delivery of excess amounts of gravel sediment to stream channels and higher rates of lateral bank erosion. These conditions are of concern to resource managers because of the potential damaging effects on recreational facilities and aquatic habitat. The purpose of this study is to develop a geographic information systems (GIS)/remote sensing (RS) based methodology to monitor spatial patterns of gravel deposition and lateral channel migration within …

Partisan Fairness And Resistricting Politics, Adam B. Cox Jan 2005

Partisan Fairness And Resistricting Politics, Adam B. Cox

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

Courts and scholars have operated on the implicit assumption that the Supreme Court’s “one person, one vote” jurisprudence put redistricting politics on a fixed, ten-year cycle. Recent redistricting controversies in Colorado, Texas, and elsewhere, however, have undermined this assumption, highlighting the fact that most states are currently free to redraw election districts as often as they like. This essay explores whether partisan fairness—a normative commitment that both scholars and the Supreme Court have identified as a central concern of districting arrangements— would be promoted by a procedural rule limiting the frequency of redistricting. While the literature has not considered this …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An outbreak of Paederus sabaeus rove beetles in Kenya during the 1997-1998 El Niño resulted in a dramatic increase of vesicular dermatitis in its capital Nairobi. The beetle, popularly called ‘Nairobi Fly’, contains a potent toxic fluid that causes epidermolysis and acute conjunctivitis. A cross-sectional epidemiological study involving 1,208 Nairobi residents was conducted to determine the health impact of this outbreak. The results showed that one-third of the Nairobi population were infected during this period. The majority of the respondents reported lesions on exposed body parts above the shoulders. Disfiguring, painful blisters and skin rashes in and around the facial …

A Report To The Urban League Of Greater Cleveland: An Assessment Of Business Support Services Available To Existing And Start-Up Small Businesses In The City Of Cleveland, Stuart Mendel

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

Developing small businesses is a way to concentrate wealth, employ city residents, improve neighborhood amenities, and provide entrepreneurial role models in urban neighborhood communities currently bereft of such. In a city where well over half of the resident population belong to groupings of people traditionally in the minority, and whose ranking is high in terms of concentrated poverty, nurturing existing and new small minority business enterprises makes good policy sense and offers a systematic intervention strategy to alleviate poverty. This report has been completed to help leadership organizations such as the Urban League of Greater Cleveland and policy-makers such as …

Impact Of The Arts On Students' Learning, Sook Ming Kong Jan 2005

Impact Of The Arts On Students' Learning, Sook Ming Kong

Graduate Research Papers

The role of the arts has been undermined for a long time in the school curriculum. Recently, a group of researchers embarked on a number of studies investigating the positive effects which the arts has on students' performance in school. The results provide an insight into the fact that students who have high involvement in the arts perform better on a variety of academic measures such as grades in English, and scores on standardized tests.

The studies also provide evidence that participation in the arts helps to reduce the drop- out rate of at-risk students and those in low SES …

The purpose of this paper is to review the current condition of geography education, to examine current research in geographic education, and to create a plan to improve student learning in my classroom. It outlines the re-emergence of geography education in the secondary setting and considers the quality of the national geography standards. A descriptive narrative of current geographic education research is used to determine best instructional practice and is aligned with Colorado's Model Geography Standards to link the current research with curriculum. The results of the research are then used to evaluate and improve the curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment …

Using Technology In A Social Studies Classroom, Cari R. Teske

Graduate Research Papers

Technology in education is nothing new. The quality of the type of instruction involving technology is worth analyzing. This review provides insight into implementation strategies and the 'best practices' of the integration of technology. It defines the roles teachers and administrators must play in order to have high-quality instruction. Throughout this review emphasis will be put on the strength that technology can bring to the social studies curriculum. And, how together social studies and technology can bring education to a more balanced approach to instruction. To create a type of instruction that emphasizes the equal support of all areas of …

Writing A Historical Fiction Novel: The Marks Of The Shaman: The Diary Of Indian Captive Olive Oatman, Heather J. Uhlmeyer

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research project was to write a historical fiction novel based on true accounts of the Indian captive Olive Oatman. Many times historical fiction novels are designed to entertain the reader, while educating them about historical facts and events. The writer hopes that this piece of literature will serve as a tool to educators in developing their Native American units to meet the needs and interests of the children. The book will help any child who reads it to understand the way of life for Native Americans and some of the ordeals that captives had to endure …

Using Web-Based Material To Support Secondary Science Curriculum, Ghadeer Filimban Jan 2005

Using Web-Based Material To Support Secondary Science Curriculum, Ghadeer Filimban

Graduate Research Papers

Web-based materials have introduced a new way of supporting students' learning and teachers' knowledge of the secondary science curriculum. However it is difficult to know which materials to use and how to use them. This review discussed some of the methods for teaching science, web-based materials that support these methods, how the Internet can add to teachers' knowledge, and some negative effects of using this technology. This review shows how teachers can integrate web-based materials into their teaching strategies, and can help teachers who have integrated them to be aware of the negatives of using the Internet in the classroom. …

Insect Colonization Of Child-Sized Remains And Delay Of Post Mortem Interval: An Exploratory Study In The Behavioral Analysis Of Pig Carcasses Via 24 Hour High Resolution Video Surveillance, Abigail L. Gremillion Jan 2005

Insect Colonization Of Child-Sized Remains And Delay Of Post Mortem Interval: An Exploratory Study In The Behavioral Analysis Of Pig Carcasses Via 24 Hour High Resolution Video Surveillance, Abigail L. Gremillion

LSU Master's Theses

This research was designed to document the decompositional and behavioral patterns and activities of arthropods colonizing child-sized remains, as observed by field sampling and 24-hour, high resolution video surveillance. The purpose of this research was to test the relationship between delays in arthropod colonization of child-sized remains and climatic conditions. Between March and June 2004, the remains of two child-sized pigs (approximately 11 kilograms) were deposited in an isolated wooded region in a suburban area of Virginia. The sites were secluded, approximately 83 yards from any dwellings. The pigs were placed on the surface: one was clothed, the other was …

On The Episodic Nature Of Derecho-Producing Convective Systems In The United States, Walker S. Ashley, T.L. Mote, M.L. Bentley

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Convectively generated windstorms occur over broad temporal and spatial scales; however, one of the larger-scale and most intense of these windstorms has been given the name ‘derecho’. This study illustrates the tendency for derechoproducing mesoscale convective systems to group together across the United States – forming a derecho series. The derecho series is recognized as any succession of derechos that develop within a similar synoptic environment with no more than 72 h separating individual events. A derecho dataset for the period 1994–2003 was assembled to investigate the groupings of these extremely damaging convective wind events. Results indicate that over 62% …

Factors Influencing Venture Capital Availability In Rural States: Possible Lessons Learned From West Virginia, David W. Hughes, Kris Mallory, Mihaela A. Szabo

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Venture capital has been identified by many as a vital element in the rapid economic growth of certain regions. The lack of access to capital, especially equity capital, has been identified as a major constraint to the economic growth of rural areas (i.e., venture capital access, as a centripetal force, concentrates rather than disperses economic activity). Researchers have advanced a focus on primarily urban sectors, such as information technologies, higher administration costs due to a lack of deal flow, and a limited support network for entrepreneurs as explanations for the lack of venture capital in rural areas. Yet, some venture …

Loglinear Residual Tests Of Moran’S I Autocorrelation: An Application To Kentucky Breast Cancer Data, Ge Lin, Tonglin Zhang

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Spatial regressions have been widely used, but their use with the permutation tests of residuals either in linear or loglinear models is rarely seen. In the present study, we have linked the Cliff-Ord permutation test of Moran’s I on linear regression errors to loglinear regression residuals under asymptotic normality. We devised both Pearson residual Moran’s IP R and deviance residual Moran’s IDR tests and applied them to a set of log-rate models for early stage and late-stage breast cancer together with socioeconomic and access-to-care data in Kentucky. The results showed that socioeconomic and access-to-care variables were sufficient to account for …
