Characteristic Dimensions Of The Step-Pool Bed Configuration: And Experimental Study, J. C. Curran, Peter Wilcock Jan 2005

Characteristic Dimensions Of The Step-Pool Bed Configuration: And Experimental Study, J. C. Curran, Peter Wilcock

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

The dominant dimension of the step-pool bed form is its spacing, which is determined by the locations at which large, step-forming grains are deposited. We conducted laboratory experiments involving active transport of widely sorted sediment, including large grains whose deposition readily formed steps. Direct observation of step development indicates that deposition of step-forming grains was predominantly associated with bed roughness impeding transport or with earlier flow and transport conditions not contemporaneous with step development. Neither mechanism is likely to occur at regular locations on the bed. Measured step spacing was found to follow a Poisson distribution, supporting the conclusion that …

Engagement With The Land: Redemption Of The Rural Residence Fantasy?, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux Jan 2005

Engagement With The Land: Redemption Of The Rural Residence Fantasy?, Kirsten Valentine Cadieux

College of Liberal Arts All Faculty Scholarship

Many assessments of the contribution of rural amenity migrants to rural sustainability have been rather bleak – or have considered the possible contributions of these migrants in terms of pessimistic opportunism. Although many who move to rural places to consume an amenitized rural lifestyle contribute significantly to the maintenance of these rural landscapes, the landscape that has resulted from their residential, rather than productive, use of rural areas poses some difficulties for environmental planners (Gertler, 1994; Troughton, 1995). For planners and residents interested in facilitating the negotiation of rural sustainability, it is important to identify ways in which rural in-migration …

Www.Church: Consulting With 19th And 20th Century Congregations In A 21st Century World, Earl J. Pierce Jan 2005

Www.Church: Consulting With 19th And 20th Century Congregations In A 21st Century World, Earl J. Pierce

Doctor of Ministry

A new pastor is called and excitement is high. Both the pastor and the congregation begin this joumey with high hopes and expectations. Yet too often things get off track quickly and people are left wondering what happened and why aren't things going in the direction we hoped?

The problem comes from a failure to understand the unique nature of a faith community. Understanding the nature includes an understanding of the roles of and the relationship between values, vision and mission in charting a course to the future of their ministry together. This failure in understanding also presents itself when …

Metanoic Adaptation: The Necessary Experience That Precedes Church Revitalization, Wayne Evans Jan 2005

Metanoic Adaptation: The Necessary Experience That Precedes Church Revitalization, Wayne Evans

Doctor of Ministry

A look at the church landscape shows that once vibrant and influential churches sometimes have stagnated or died. Without a remedy, some of the EFC-ER churches I superintend have already faced this. My contention is that such churches can be revitalized. When, how, and with what tools can they be transformed? I answer these questions in this document. Revitalization is not a formula to guarantee success; it is an experience that spiritually and strategically remakes the church from the inside out. I call the experience Metanoic Adaptation. By research and experience, I frame the conditions, components, and course for …

Dogs And Dog Control In Developing Countries, J. F. Reese Jan 2005

Dogs And Dog Control In Developing Countries, J. F. Reese

State of the Animals 2005

The relationship between a community and its dogs is not always entirely positive, and many cultures identify similar problems associated with having dogs in their midst. For example, in South Africa, the Soweto community identified the problems caused by dogs as road accidents, barking and fighting, biting children and killing livestock, and uncontrolled fecal contamination (Beck 2000). Such problems exist in many cultures, throughout the developed and developing worlds.

It is against this background of a wide range of man-dog relationships that dogs in the developing world must be seen and understood. Knowledge about and understanding of the complexity of …

Feral Cats: An Overview, Margaret R. Slater, Stephanie Shain Jan 2005

Feral Cats: An Overview, Margaret R. Slater, Stephanie Shain

State of the Animals 2005

Humans and cats have a long and complex history together. Since the nineteenth century, contradictory ideas about the need to protect and care for cats have moved us toward a shift in ideas, values, and behaviors to a more benign perception of cats than was generally the case in previous centuries. In some quarters, but not all, even feral cats have begun to be seen as worthy of our study and humane treatment. In many countries, the welfare of all cats has become a focus of public concern, but nowhere is the shift in values reflected more than in the …

Range Wars: The Plains Frontier Of Boys Don't Cry, Christina E. Dando Jan 2005

Range Wars: The Plains Frontier Of Boys Don't Cry, Christina E. Dando

Geography and Geology Faculty Publications

In the mythology of the American West, range wars pitted ranchers against farmers, insiders versus outsiders, each struggling to control access to land, each fighting to preserve the freedom and opportunities that first drew them to the frontier. The film, Boys Don't Cry (2000), set on the contemporary Plains and based on actual events, tells of insiders and outsiders who attempt to claim a place. The individuals at the center of the film challenge symbolic fences and attempt border-crossings as they struggle to construct and live with their identities. Plains citizens are depicted to erect and police societal fences, defining …

Discovering And Identifying The Opportunities And Challenges Of Our Aging Population: Statewide Focus Groups And Utah Agencies Identify Concerns And Issues On The Impact Of The Aging Baby Boom Generation, Utah Department Of Human Services, Center For Public Policy And Administration, University Of Utah

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

The following document is the result of the information discovery process and seeks to answer the question: what are the issues and potential impacts of the aging Baby Boomers? The Utah Aging Initiative hosted seven focus groups statewide in 2004 and interviewed officials from state government agencies to learn about and identify the issues facing Utah as the population ages. This report presents what was discovered and contains two sections: the Focus Group Summary, and the Interviews with State Agencies Summary.

Cooperation And Coordination Are Invasive Species: Important For Effective Management Of Invasive Weeds, U.S. Government Accountability Office Jan 2005

Cooperation And Coordination Are Invasive Species: Important For Effective Management Of Invasive Weeds, U.S. Government Accountability Office

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

Invasive weeds, native or nonnative plant species, cause harm to natural areas such as rangelands or wildlife habitat and economic impacts due to lost productivity of these areas. While the federal investment in combating invasive species is substantial most has been concentrated on agricultural lands, not on natural areas. In this report, GAO describes (1) the entities that address invasive weeds in natural areas and the funding sources they use; (2) federal, state, and local weed management officials’ views on the barriers to weed management; and (3) their opinions about how additional resources for weed management could be distributed. GAO …

The Major Vernacular Regions Of Tennessee, James Curtis Barker Jan 2005

The Major Vernacular Regions Of Tennessee, James Curtis Barker

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This research project delineates and examines the relative strength of the major vernacular culture regions of Tennessee. Vernacular regions are delineated by recording and mapping businesses and organizations whose identities contain a key element of a regional label, such as: East Tennessee auto sales, Delta awning, etc.. Data are collected using a popular internet telephone directory.

The number of listings occurring in each county is recorded for each regional label. The county totals for each region are used to generate population-weighted county index values (CIV). Maps of county index values (CIVs) display core and periphery tendencies within vernacular regions. The …

The Segregated Distribution Of Middle Class African American Households In The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, Jay L. Newberry Jan 2005

The Segregated Distribution Of Middle Class African American Households In The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area, Jay L. Newberry

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This research analyzes the residential distribution of middle-class African American households in the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area to determine if the "middle class" status affords them greater integration with the dominant white group. Using 1990 and 2000 census income data for white and black households in the Pittsburgh MSA, lower, middle, and upper class categories were created in both groups for comparison against the black middle class category via five segregation indices. This research found that, although the African American households experience varying degrees of segregation by class, all are highly segregated from the white group with middle class African American …

Reconstructing Early Historical Landscapes In The Northern Santa Clara Valley, Alan K. Brown Jan 2005

Reconstructing Early Historical Landscapes In The Northern Santa Clara Valley, Alan K. Brown

Research Manuscript Series

The following essay, which is not a finished treatise upon any aspect of the early environmental history of the northern Santa Clara Valley, is also not intended to be a manual of procedures for investigating that subject. Although I would hope that elements ofboth purposes can be found here, the intention, more generally and tentatively, is to point out a few possibilities that may be incorporated into more rigorous and, in terms of practical consequences, more important future investigations by others. Because of the variety and incompleteness of the approaches that are followed here, no attempt has been made to …

Iowa's Sand Prairie State Preserves: Anomalous Grain-Size Distributions And Optically Stimulated Luminescence (Osl) Dates, Steven H. Emerman, Brian R. Depew, Lisa K. Anderson Jan 2005

Iowa's Sand Prairie State Preserves: Anomalous Grain-Size Distributions And Optically Stimulated Luminescence (Osl) Dates, Steven H. Emerman, Brian R. Depew, Lisa K. Anderson

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Grain-size distributions and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates were obtained for the sand from Iowa's five sand prairie state preserves, which are Behren's Ponds and Woodland, Cedar Hills Sand Prairie, Kish-Ke-Kosh Prairie, Marietta Sand Prairie and Rock Island. OSL dates ranged from the late Pleistocene (15,560 years B.P.) to the very late Holocene (as recent as 590 years B.P.), indicating that the late Pleistocene and Holocene Epochs in Iowa have seen multiple episodes of aridity, which is consistent with results from the Nebraska Sand Hills and eolian sand stringers in southeastern Minnesota. The grain-size distributions were anomalous in that, compared …

Testing The Potential Of Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing For Retrospectively Estimating Fire Severity In African Savannahs, Alistair M.S. Smith, Martin J. Wooster, Nick A. Drake, Frederick M. Dipotso, Michael J. Falkowski, Andrew T. Hudak Jan 2005

Testing The Potential Of Multi-Spectral Remote Sensing For Retrospectively Estimating Fire Severity In African Savannahs, Alistair M.S. Smith, Martin J. Wooster, Nick A. Drake, Frederick M. Dipotso, Michael J. Falkowski, Andrew T. Hudak

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The remote sensing of fire severity is a noted goal in studies of forest and grassland wildfires. Experiments were conducted to discover and evaluate potential relationships between the characteristics of African savannah fires and post-fire surface spectral reflectance in the visible to shortwave infrared spectral region. Nine instrumented experimental fires were conducted in semi-arid woodland savannah of Chobe National Park (Botswana), where fire temperature (Tmax) and duration (dt) were recorded using thermocouples positioned at different heights and locations. These variables, along with measures of fireline intensity (FLI), integrated temperature with time (Tsum) and biomass (and carbon/nitrogen) …
