Change And Continuity In Student Achievement From Grades 3 To 5: A Policy Dilemma, Mary Mccaslin, Heidi Legg Burross, Thomas L. Good Jan 2005

Change And Continuity In Student Achievement From Grades 3 To 5: A Policy Dilemma, Mary Mccaslin, Heidi Legg Burross, Thomas L. Good

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

In this article we examine student performance on mandated tests in grades 3, 4, and 5 in one state. We focus on this interval, which we term “the fourth grade window,” based on our hypothesis that students in grade four are particularly vulnerable to decrements in achievement. The national focus on the third grade as the critical benchmark in student performance has distracted researchers and policy makers from recognition that the fourth grade transition is essential to our understanding of how to promote complex thinking and reasoning that is built upon a foundation of basic skills that may be necessary, …

Calcareous Nannofossil Evidence For The Existence Of The Gulf Stream During The Late Maastrichtian, David K. Watkins, Jean M. Self-Trail Jan 2005

Calcareous Nannofossil Evidence For The Existence Of The Gulf Stream During The Late Maastrichtian, David K. Watkins, Jean M. Self-Trail

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Upper Maastrichtian calcareous nannofossil assemblages, from eight cores on the South Carolina Coastal Plain (onshore set) and three deep sea drilling sites from the continental slope and abyssal hills (offshore set), were analyzed by correlation and principal component analysis to examine the ancient surface water thermal structure. In addition, a temperature index derived from independently published paleobiogeographic information was applied to the sample data. All three methods indicate a strong separation of the samples into onshore and offshore sets, with the offshore data set exhibiting significantly warmer paleotemperatures. The great disparity between these two sample sets indicates that there was …

Vegetation And Climate Change On The Bolivian Altiplano Between 108,000 And 18,000 Years Ago, Alex Chepstow-Lusty, Mark B. Bush, Michael R. Frogley, Paul A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James Aronson Jan 2005

Vegetation And Climate Change On The Bolivian Altiplano Between 108,000 And 18,000 Years Ago, Alex Chepstow-Lusty, Mark B. Bush, Michael R. Frogley, Paul A. Baker, Sherilyn C. Fritz, James Aronson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

A 90,000-yr record of environmental change before 18,000 cal yr B.P. has been constructed using pollen analyses from a sediment core obtained from Salar de Uyuni (3653 m above sea level) on the Bolivian Altiplano. The sequence consists of alternating mud and salt, which reflect shifts between wet and dry periods. Low abundances of aquatic species between 108,000 and 50,000 yr ago (such as Myriophyllum and Isoëtes) and marked fluctuations in Pediastrum suggest generally dry conditions dominated by saltpans. Between 50,000 yr ago and 36,000 cal yr B.P., lacustrine sediments become increasingly dominant. The transition to the formation of …

What Do They Know And When Do They Know It? An Examination Of Citizen Awareness Of Context, Brady Baybeck Jan 2005

What Do They Know And When Do They Know It? An Examination Of Citizen Awareness Of Context, Brady Baybeck

Publications

The connection between the individual and her aggregate geographic environment, usually defined as the neighborhood, is a key component of the contextual model of social influence. However, there is substantial anecdotal evidence that people have very little knowledge or connection to their neighborhood. In this paper we explore the connection by using data from the South Bend Study (Huckfeldt and Sprague 1985) to answer two questions. What do people know about objective conditions of their neighborhoods? Second, do these conditions influence perceptions people have of their neighborhoods? We find that (a) people have a good deal of knowledge about the …

Is There Really A “Border Effect”?, A.K.M. Mahbub Morshed

Economics Discussion Papers

Abstract: The observed excess price variability in cross-border city pairs compared to that in withincountry city pairs has been defined as the “border effect.” We used a unique data set from cities that were in the same country at one time and were in two separate countries later on to examine the effects of the presence of a national border on price variability. Interestingly a border-like effect was detected even during the period when all the cities were in the same country. We also found a large border effect when cities were in two separate countries. However, we found no …

Long-Term Persistence Of Coral Assemblages On The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Science And Management, Richard B. Aronson, William F. Precht, Thaddeus J.T. Murdoch, Martha L. Robbart Jan 2005

Long-Term Persistence Of Coral Assemblages On The Flower Garden Banks, Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico: Implications For Science And Management, Richard B. Aronson, William F. Precht, Thaddeus J.T. Murdoch, Martha L. Robbart

Gulf of Mexico Science

The coral reefs of the Flower Garden Banks (FGB) are among the most sensitive biological communities in U.S. Federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. In 1973, the Minerals Management Service (MMS) established a program of protective activities at those reefs. The MMS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have been monitoring coral populations on a long-term basis to detect incipient changes caused by oil and gas activities. The results also help in explaining the widespread degradation of reef ecosystems observed in the Caribbean region over the past few decades. Two sites, each 100 X 100 m and …

What Difference Does It Make?: Digital Technology In The Theological Classroom, Mary E. Hess Jan 2005

What Difference Does It Make?: Digital Technology In The Theological Classroom, Mary E. Hess

Faculty Publications

Digital technologies can make a difference in helping theological educators to align their Christian convictions and pedagogical strategies more effectively by (1) providing a richer, more multiply intelligent environment within which to learn; (2) providing more opportunities for collaboration; (3) giving teachers a better angle of vision on the challenges their students are facing and the specific assumptions with which they enter courses; (4) providing better access to primary source materials; (5) overcoming constraints of geography and time; and (6) attending to the meaning-making contexts of our students and our communities of faith.
