Redefining 'Unimpaired:' The Evolution Of The National Parks Mission, 1872-1933, Annamarie Mittlestadt

History Student Work

The idea of national parks has long conjured particular images for people, from the vast, majestic landscapes of Yellowstone, to the Park Service or possibly even preservation. With the overwhelming mission statement of the 21st century National Park Service, very few people know or even understand the troubled history behind the parks. The following analysis focuses on Yosemite and Yellowstone National Park, not only because of their popularity, but because they remain the oldest, largest, and most well known establishments. The current battle between use and preservation of the parks remains embedded in the histories of the two major parks, …

Facts From Faeces: Prey Remains In Wolf, Canis Lupus, Faeces Revise Occurrence Records For Mammals Of British Columbia’S Coastal Archipelago, Michael H. H. Price, Chris T. Darimont, Neville N. Winchester, Paul C. Paquet

Biogeography and Ecological Opportunity Collection

Archipelagos often harbour taxa that are endemic and vulnerable to disturbance. Conservation planning and research for these areas depend fundamentally on accurate and current taxonomic inventories. Although basic ecological information is in its infancy, the temperate rainforest islands of coastal British Columbia are undergoing rapid human-caused modification, particularly logging. We report herein new mammal records for these islands as determined by prey remains in the faeces of Wolves (Canis lupus), the area’s apex mammalian terrestrial predator. Of particular interest is our detection of Marten (Martes americana) on islands previously inventoried and island occupancy by Moose (Alces alces), which have apparently …

Profile: Becoming--Stories Of Discovery And Growth, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Colleges, too, have opportunities to define and move into their futures, although rarely as dramatically as first year students. As this issue of Profile documents, this is such a moment for UMM. Physically, our campus has changed remarkably in the past few years, and will be continuing to develop in the next few, as we complete the Social Science renovation project, the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new athletic field. Two areas covered in the pages that follow represent particularly exciting and dramatic moves for our college into its future.

Market For Private Dispute Resolution Services - An Empirical Re-Assessment Of Icann-Udrp Performance, The, Jay P. Kesan, Andres A. Gallo

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

We present a thorough analysis of one of the ADR regimes that is considered a significant success in Internet markets, the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) implemented by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). In this work, we perform a complete empirical analysis of the UDRP and evaluate its performance. We then extrapolate the results to other sectors of the Internet market and to private dispute resolution in general.[...] In this paper, we thoroughly critique the performance of the UDRP providers and identify the main variables that determine ICANN's efficiency. For example, one of the key variables, …

Subsidiary Initiative And Strategic Choice In Indian Software Subsidiaries Of Multinational Corporations, Rishikesha T Krishnan Apr 2005

Subsidiary Initiative And Strategic Choice In Indian Software Subsidiaries Of Multinational Corporations, Rishikesha T Krishnan

Working Papers

In this paper, we investigate subsidiary initiative and strategic choice in the context of Indian software subsidiaries of multinational corporations. Contrary to earlier research, we find that high levels of subsidiary initiative are associated with subsidiaries that have low levels of integration and high levels of autonomy. We also find a new trend in the organizational arrangements of software subsidiaries within multinationals in that some multinational parents are allowing subsidiaries to chart their own destiny in return for a dilution of a part ( or whole) of their stake in the subsidiary.

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll Apr 2005

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll

Working Paper Series

Inspired by passionate contemporary debates about music copyright, this Article investigates how, when, and why music first came within copyright's domain. Ironically, although music publishers and recording companies are among the most aggressive advocates for strong copyright in music today, music publishers in eighteenth-century England resisted extending copyright to music. This Article sheds light on a series of early legal disputes concerning printed music that yield important insights into original understandings of copyright law and music's role in society. By focusing attention on this understudied episode, this Article demonstrates that the concept of copyright was originally far more circumscribed than …

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos Apr 2005

The State Of Housing For Hispanics In The United States, Carlos Vargas-Ramos

Policy Documents

The picture painted in this brief is mixed. On the one hand, Latinos lag significantly behind the aggregate of the US population in positive housing indicators and are overrepresented in the categories of negative housing indicators, and they do so for 2003 as they did in 2001, 1999 and 1997. On the other hand, over this period there has been some progress in some areas of concern; but this progress has not been necessarily consistent. This policy paper includes recommendations to improve housing for latinos.

Readings In Place: Recent Publications In Southwestern Literature And Studies, Thomas Lynch

Department of English: Faculty Publications

The "Southwest" is nearly always defined along the intersection of two axes, one cultural and the other natural. Certain characteristics of these two axes are obvious in the six works considered here. Culturally, the region is most distinguished from the rest of the US by the existence of two enduring ethnic communities, the indigenous and the Hispanic, with the presence of the Mexican border exerting a powerful influence. In very different ways, Molly H. Mullin’s Culture in the Market Place: Gender, Art, and Value in the American Southwest, Audrey Goodman’s Translating Southwestern Landscapes: The Making of an Anglo Literary …

Differences In Teacher Qualifications And The Relationship To Middle School Student Achievement In Mathematics, Carrie R. Ferguson Apr 2005

Differences In Teacher Qualifications And The Relationship To Middle School Student Achievement In Mathematics, Carrie R. Ferguson

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to compare mathematics teacher preparation and experience to the achievement of middle school students (grades 6–8) on the mathematics section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Using a theoretical framework, the research examined the extent to which the teacher qualification variables were related to the student achievement. Measures of teacher qualifications included four independent variables: (a) number of mathematics content hours, (b) level of teaching certification, (c) number of years teaching experience, and (d) number of years teaching middle school/junior high mathematics. Participants in this causal-comparative study included 97 teachers and …

Forsaking The Forests For The Trees: Forestry Law In Papua New Guinea Inhibits Indigenous Customary Ownership, Alyssa A. Vegter Apr 2005

Forsaking The Forests For The Trees: Forestry Law In Papua New Guinea Inhibits Indigenous Customary Ownership, Alyssa A. Vegter

Washington International Law Journal

Illegal logging in the tropical forests of Papua New Guinea is one of the greatest threats to the forests and indigenous people of this island nation. Increasing pressure from the commercial logging industry, legislation that restrains customary ownership, and an unclear legal basis for this ownership subjects the indigenous people of Papua New Guinea to unscrupulous, unsustainable, and illegal logging practices. As a region central to the preservation of global ecological and cultural diversity, the devastating consequences of illegal logging in Papua New Guinea have become nationally and internationally significant. Customary ownership of the forests by the indigenous clans of …

Review Of Not Just Any Land: A Personal And Literary Journey Into The American Grasslands By John Price, Walter Isle Apr 2005

Review Of Not Just Any Land: A Personal And Literary Journey Into The American Grasslands By John Price, Walter Isle

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

John Price reads and travels his way into the grasslands, the prairies, in his fine new book. He reads four landscape writers-Dan O'Brien, Linda Hasselstrom, William Least Heat-Moon, and Mary Swander-who "commit to a place in such social and ecological peril" as the grasslands. Price also travels to each writer's "place" to talk and try to get a better sense of the ways each has "become native" to a particular geography. Those journeys are also Price's own immersion in the grasslands in hopes of discovering how he himself can be native.

In South Dakota, he reads Dan O'Brien's Equinox (1997) …
