A Fishing Farm In The West Fjords Of Iceland: A Preliminary Report Of The Archaeofauna From Gjögur, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern
A Fishing Farm In The West Fjords Of Iceland: A Preliminary Report Of The Archaeofauna From Gjögur, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern
School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications
The date for the onset of full scale commercial fisheries in Iceland remains somewhat controversial, but thus far the earliest radiocarbon dated seasonal fishing station (11th- 13th century) is in NW Iceland’s Strandasýsla County at Akurvík. This paper presents a preliminary report of the ongoing analysis of the large archaeofauna from the farm mound at Gjögur, 3 km from Akurvík, places the site of Gjögur in the wider context of the NW region of Iceland by comparing the site with the Akurvík archaeofauna, and outlines new methodologies of reconstructing live fish size and age based on recovered fish bones. Although …
Disease Outbreaks In Coupled Populations : An Application To Measles Spread In Cameroon, Kirsten Maggie Viz
Disease Outbreaks In Coupled Populations : An Application To Measles Spread In Cameroon, Kirsten Maggie Viz
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Many childhood diseases can be modeled mathematically using a system of differential equations that group the overall population into compartments. Much research has been done to understand and control the spread of these diseases within a single population and between coupled populations with constant parameters. In this thesis, we are concerned with how a disease is spread through and between coupled populations using models with time-varying parameters and asymmetric coupling.
Measles outbreaks in the West African country of Cameroon present a good example of disease spread with seasonality. By dividing Cameroon into two subpopulations and using parameters that reflect recent …
The Importance Of Trip Destination In Determining Transit Share, Gary Barnes
The Importance Of Trip Destination In Determining Transit Share, Gary Barnes
Journal of Public Transportation
For a variety of reasons, policymakers in recent years have taken a greater interest in increasing the use of transit. However, it is difficult to substantially impact transit use at a large scale, because it is strongly dependent on development density and other slow-changing features of urban land use. This article argues that policymakers hoping to increase transit use should focus on increasing the size of downtowns and developing suburban job centers at downtown sizes and densities. There are both empirical and practical arguments. Empirically, large, dense destinations have a very substantial impact on mode choice, regardless of the characteristics …

Does The Internet Fundamentally Change Anything?: European Research And The Cost A20 Action On The Impact Of The Internet On Mass Media (Television, Newspapers And Radio), Brian O'Neill
Conference Papers
The subject of this paper represents one attempt at a more balanced approach and consists of the research undertaken under the COST A20 action, ‘The Impact of the Internet on Mass Media’. The paper presents a brief overview of some of the principal themes under discussion in relation to radio, television and newspapers as well as offering some reflections on the emerging issues for communications research at a cross media level. The central theme is whether there the Internet (with a capital ‘I’) has had the transformative effect its proponents might once have claimed or whether there has been a …

Plant Adaptation Regions: Ecological And Climatic Classification Of Plant Materials, Kenneth P. Vogel, Marty R. Schmer, Robert B. Mitchell
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The effective use of plant materials for an array of objectives including conservation, restoration, renovation, landscaping, and bioremediation requires knowledge of the adaptation of each species and, more specifically, knowledge of the adaptation of cultivars, strains, accessions, or ecotypes of a species to specific sites or regions. For agronomic and horticultural plants, specific adaptation information has been and continues to be developed by extensive testing. Rangeland, grassland, park, and restoration project managers often lack the resources to determine adaptation areas for plant materials because of the large number of species that are used and the extensive geographical areas that are …

The Town Hall Is Filling With Boulders, Christopher Miller
The Town Hall Is Filling With Boulders, Christopher Miller
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
When I first decided that I wanted to endeavor the realization and composition of a book-length collection of poetry, I had no theme or binding conceptual idea in mind. I saw the thesis project as a chance to create an anthology of work, one that would both map my personal growth as a writer and the distillation of my craft and technique. I knew the poems were going to reach over a period of about two-and-a-half years, so it was clear to me right away that I had no idea where writing would take me, or what iterations my imagination …
Comparing Montessori Education And Conventional Education On Aspects Of Creativity, Tiffany Jones
Comparing Montessori Education And Conventional Education On Aspects Of Creativity, Tiffany Jones
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
My Honors Thesis compares creativity in children taught in a Montessori classroom with students taught in a conventional classroom. I tested 58 children at BelleValleyElementary Schoolin EriePennsylvania, half in the Montessori program, half in traditional classrooms. Their ages ranged from 5-9, from kindergarten to 3rd grade. I hypothesized that the independence allowed in Montessori classrooms would help foster creativity in its students. The project uses two forms of evaluation to test the concept of creativity, the Torrance Test of Creative Thinking and consensual assessment to score a creative collage. Significant developmental differences were found; older children scored higher on …
What Is Constitutional Democracy? A Comparative Analysis Between The United States And The European Union, Rebecca Tweed
What Is Constitutional Democracy? A Comparative Analysis Between The United States And The European Union, Rebecca Tweed
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
It is difficult to imagine the concept of constitutionalism without the notion of deliberative democracy. Historically, written constitutions are the capstone of the ages-long struggle to limit arbitrary governmental action. James Madison said, “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government.”
We live in an era of constitution making. There are close to 200 national …
Economic Environment And Applications Of Telemedicine, Shahryar Oliai
Economic Environment And Applications Of Telemedicine, Shahryar Oliai
SPNA Review
Telemedicine is broadly defined as the transmission of electronic medical data across a distance among hospitals, clinicians, and/or patients. This definition is deliberately unlimited to what kind of information is transmitted, how the information is transmitted, or how the information is used once received (HCAB, 2003). Telemedicine has the potential of making a greater positive effect on the future of healthcare and medicine than any other modality. Fueled by advances in multiple technologies such as digital communications, full-motion/compressed video, and telecommunications, providers see an unprecedented opportunity to provide access to high-quality care, independent of distance or location.

A Study Of Brownfields Redevelopment In Rural Oregon, Angela Michtom
A Study Of Brownfields Redevelopment In Rural Oregon, Angela Michtom
Master's Projects
This project will look at the state of brownfields redevelopment in rural Oregon. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is funding, and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEO) is conducting Targeted Brownfield Assessments (TBA) throughout Oregon. Oregon has even developed the Oregon Rural and Economically Distressed Site Assessment Initiative to specifically address brownfields in rural Oregon. But what happens after the assessment is done? Why do some sites move quickly into development, while others remain stalled? This paper will examine case studies of sites that have received funds for Site Specific Assessments, and analyze the data to determine what factors …

Tod Proposal For Fremont's Warm Springs Bart Station Fremont California, Jayapriya Cherukuru
Master's Projects
The Warm Springs BART Extension Transit Village is a transit oriented development proposed for a site in south Fremont, California. Residents of Alameda County approved a measure to extend the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) line from Fremont to Warm Springs. To date, a Supplemental Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) and a Specific Plan have been prepared for the station area.
According to the SEIR, BART has proposed a parking lot designed around the station area to accommodate around 2040 on-site parking spaces.
The main objective of this study is to provide a design alternative for the City of Fremont, through …
Are Political Orientations Genetically Transmitted?, John R. Alford, Carolyn L. Funk, John R. Hibbing
Are Political Orientations Genetically Transmitted?, John R. Alford, Carolyn L. Funk, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
We test the possibility that political attitudes and behaviors are the result of both environmental and genetic factors. Employing standard methodological approaches in behavioral genetics—–specifically, comparisons of the differential correlations of the attitudes of monozygotic twins and dizygotic twins—–we analyze data drawn from a large sample of twins in the United States, supplemented with findings from twins in Australia. The results indicate that genetics plays an important role in shaping political attitudes and ideologies but a more modest role in forming party identification; as such, they call for finer distinctions in theorizing about the sources of political attitudes. We conclude …
Nebraska Public School Superintendents' Perceptions Of Nebraska's Assessment/Accountability System's Effect On High Schools, Wanda M. Clark
Nebraska Public School Superintendents' Perceptions Of Nebraska's Assessment/Accountability System's Effect On High Schools, Wanda M. Clark
Student Work
The purpose of this study was to determine superintendents' perceptions of the Nebraska assessment/accountability reporting system (STARS) as they effect high schools. Data measuring the superintendents' perceptions of the STARS program included how they perceived the STARS program's effect on teachers, instructional practices, students, building principals, and resources. Demographic information was collected to determine if differences existed between subgroups based on the superintendents' district size, superintendents' years of experience, the district's free/reduced lunch percentage, the district's 11th grade portfolio rating on communication, the amount of STARS funding, and the financial support required from the district.

The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan
The True Patron Of Ireland : Saint Brigit And The Rise Of Celtic Christianity, Autumn Dolan
Honors Theses
When Saint Patrick landed in Ireland in 432 AD, history says that he brought Christianity to the Irish. In actuality, though, Patrick's arrival was the beginning of a religious struggle between Rome and Ireland. Patrick's Church was based on Roman traditions and his mission in Ireland was not just to defeat paganism, but to intercede in the foundations of an already developing Celtic Church. To challenge Patrick and his Roman ways, Ireland exalted a saint of its own. Saint Brigit ( 452-525 AD) and the characteristics she represented in Irish hagiography clearly illustrated the ideal Irish saint. Ireland's reverence for …

Collaboration As A Foundation For The Project Approach In Family Child Care, Joan Youngquist, Carolyn P. Edwards, Ruth Heaton
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Supporting children's curiosity was considered important at my family child care home. How could we best achieve this? As my assistant caregiver Deb and 1 attended professional development workshops, we began to wonder if the project approach (Helm & Katz 2001) would be an effective means of supporting inquiry and collaborative learning. Before we would commit ourselves, we wanted to learn more. We had many questions. Just what is the project approach? What does it look like? How will it support children's learning? What do we need to be successful with it? The literature suggested many examples of successful projects …
Global Citizenship As A Function Of Higher Education: The Demographic And Institutional Determinants In A Graduate Student Population, Jade G. Winn Edd
Global Citizenship As A Function Of Higher Education: The Demographic And Institutional Determinants In A Graduate Student Population, Jade G. Winn Edd
Dissertations
Over the last twenty years, the explosive growth in information technologies, combined with the globalization and easy access to other cultures, has allowed people to think of themselves more as citizens of the world than of a particular nation. Although the notion of “global citizenship” is often discussed in the popular press, little scholarly attention has been devoted to its measurement. Less attention has been paid to the role higher education plays in creating global citizens. To address these problems, a survey instrument was created to measure three facets of global citizenship: environmentalism, social justice, and civic responsibility, and was …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The work included in my MFA thesis exhibition entitled Schemas, represent the relationship that objects have to the body via perception. They become a map of understanding that is at once the object and the experience of that things objectness. Strategically composed this experience is translated into texture, color, and pattern. In this thesis statement I will address how we understand objects in the world and the importance of our interaction with said objects. In addition I will discuss the map like processes that I employ to create these works. I will also discuss the influential artists and writing that …

What Makes Small-City Downtowns Viable?, Kyle Noonan
Honors Scholar Theses
The paper examines the experience of Connecticut's urban centers over the past century with an eye toward informing public policy. An in-depth qualitative discussion describes the rise and characteristics of urbanism, and then its unraveling. Linear regression analysis then quantifies the impact of various contributory factors on urban economic health in Connecticut cities since 1980. The findings suggest that local policymakers are largely unable to influence economic conditions in their cities.

Spatial Implications Of Urban Functional Classification: A Study Of Small Urban Places In The North-Central United States, Tyler A. Van Meeteren
Student Work
The idea that cities have diverse economic structures and social characteristics is commonly understood. Many times these differences can be traced to historical regional growth or resource availability. Recognition and better understanding of these different types of cities requires their classification. Classification is way to organize complex and diverse information in order to create a better understanding of processes and relationships. One of the ways in which geographers have classified cities, in terms of describing the external relations, is called functional town classification. The simplest way of classifying cites is to identify the distinctive role they play in the city …
