A Lesson Plan On Fungi Diversity For The Centro De Educación Creativa, November 2005, Rachel Deliz

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Fungi are integral components of a forest environment, but they are often overlooked in elementary education, despite their crucial role in nutrient cycles. Concepts pertaining to fungi diversity were researched and compiled to be part of the 5th grade curriculum of Centro de Educación Creativa. The result of this project was three PowerPoint presentations, each coupled with 2-3 visual aids, experiments and/or activities. I expect these presentations to aid in the environmental education curriculum at the C.E.C and to promote an appreciation of the Kingdom Fungi.

The Karakoram Anomaly? Glacier Expansion And The ‘Elevation Effect,’ Karakoram Himalaya, Kenneth Hewitt

In the late 1990s widespread evidence of glacier expansion was found in the central Karakoram, in contrast to a worldwide decline of mountain glaciers. The expansions were almost exclusively in glacier basins from the highest parts of the range and developed quickly after decades of decline. Exceptional numbers of glacier surges were also reported. Unfortunately, there has been no on-going measurement of climatic or glaciological variables at these elevations. The present article examines possible explanations for this seemingly anomalous behavior, using evidence from short-term monitoring programs, low-altitude weather stations, and the distinctive environmental characteristics of the region. Modeling Hurricane Evacuation Vulnerability: A Case Study Of Pinellas County, Florida, Raymond A. Miller Jr.

Determining where people are most likely to suffer losses and have difficulty in evacuating from a hurricane is important to developing a hurricane response strategy. This thesis proposes a methodology for modeling and assessing evacuation vulnerability to a specific hurricane and applies this method to study Pinellas County, Florida.

The vulnerability of Pinellas County to evacuation problems and the degree of loss that may be suffered from a hurricane is quantified in the Hurricane Evacuation Vulnerability Index. This index is the sum of three indices that represent social, transportation, and geophysical aspects of hazards research. Social vulnerability is assessed with …

Sluice Boxes On The Shores: An Environmental History Of Gold Mining On Oregon's South Coast, Tania Louise Hyatt-Evenson

Dissertations and Theses

Environmental historians have researched, analyzed, and concluded that gold mining significantly altered the environment in Southern Oregon. Environmental case studies have examined mining's impact on the watersheds in the Rogue Valley, but none have analyzed the effect gold miners had on the Southern Oregon coast. While gold mining occurred on the South Coast from the 1850s to the 1940s, on a smaller scale, the impact from environmental change is just as significant. The purpose of this study is to understand how mining changed the landscape of the South Coast, and how this change affected the human populations that lived in …

The 2005 Supreme Court decision in Kelo v. City of New London has galvanized much unwarranted controversy over governmental authority to condemn private property. A legislative reaction throughout the country has focused on limiting governmental condemnation authority in order to encourage economic development. This article discusses some of the specific pros and cons of reactionary legislation by both the federal and New York legislature.

This paper is a brief discussion of a recent research on how Brazilian cities have been shaped from the late 1980s to the early 2000s through several case studies in different cities. After the disruption of the modernist paradigm, the demythification of Brasilia, and the redemocratization of the country in the 1980s, architecture and urbanism in Brazil were eager for new models with which to face urban development. My talk is divided into three main sections. I first want to describe five principles that guided my actions as Secretary of Natural Resources for the Commonwealth of Virginia from 1994 through 1998. Then, I will offer some updated principles for an “American Conservation Ethic.” Finally, I will discuss some of the current environmental issues we face and how some of these principles are being, or could be, applied.
