Hazard Areas Associated With Major Volcanoes In The Cascade Mountain Range, Caitlin Chamberlin ('05) Apr 2005

Hazard Areas Associated With Major Volcanoes In The Cascade Mountain Range, Caitlin Chamberlin ('05)

Atlas of Maine

The Cascade Mountain Range in Washington State is the site of several active volcanoes that have the potential to erupt which would deeply affect the lives of those who live near them. This study explores the hazard areas associated with the five largest volcanoes in the region: Mt. Baker, Glacier Peak, Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens. It was determined which geographic regions would be affected by tephra, pyroclastic blasts and lahar flows and the associated populations that live in each of these areas. The level of emergency preparedness necessary for a volcanic eruption could be better determined …

A Preliminary Habitat Suitability Analysis For The Restoration Of South China Tigers In The Hupingshan Reserve, China, Rob Mehlich ('05) Apr 2005

A Preliminary Habitat Suitability Analysis For The Restoration Of South China Tigers In The Hupingshan Reserve, China, Rob Mehlich ('05)

Atlas of Maine

The South China tiger, Panthera tigris amoyensis, once roamed the greater part of southern China. However, expanding human populations and other anthropogenic effects have resulted in the extinction of the wild population. The Chinese government has expressed interest in a reintroduction program for this species of tigers. Recent studies suggest that the Hupingshan preserve is potentially a good candidate for a tiger reintroduction program. Hupingshan is located on the border of the Hunan and Hubei provinces in Southern China. This study was a preliminary habitat suitability analysis, for the restoration of South China tigers in the Hupingshan reserve, China. ArcGIS …

Is Climate Change The 21st Century’S Most Urgent Environmental Problem?, Indur M. Goklany Apr 2005

Is Climate Change The 21st Century’S Most Urgent Environmental Problem?, Indur M. Goklany

Center for Applied Economics

Some have argued that the Kyoto Protocol and other schemes for immediately mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are justified because human-induced global warming is, in the words of the 42nd U.S. President, William J. Clinton, “the overriding environmental challenge” facing the globe today.1 Another argument, advanced by those who are more cautious and perhaps less prone to hyperbole, is that the impacts of global warming – on top of myriad other global public health and environmental threats – may prove to be the proverbial “straw that broke the camel’s back.” They suggest that climate change will overwhelm human and natural …

Use Of Maxitive (Possibility) Measures In Foundations Of Physics And Description Of Randomness: Case Study, A. M. Finkelstein, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Hung T. Nguyen Apr 2005

Use Of Maxitive (Possibility) Measures In Foundations Of Physics And Description Of Randomness: Case Study, A. M. Finkelstein, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich, Scott A. Starks, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

According to the traditional probability theory, events with a positive but very small probability can occur (although very rarely). For example, from the purely mathematical viewpoint, it is possible that the thermal motion of all the molecules in a coffee cup goes in the same direction, so this cup will start lifting up.

In contrast, physicists believe that events with extremely small probability cannot occur. In this paper, we show that to get a consistent formalization of this belief, we need, in addition to the original probability measure, to also consider a maxitive (possibility) measure.

From Fuzzification And Intervalization To Anglification: A New 5d Geometric Formalism For Physics And Data Processing, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich Apr 2005

From Fuzzification And Intervalization To Anglification: A New 5d Geometric Formalism For Physics And Data Processing, Scott A. Starks, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We show that in understanding foundations of modern physics, with its 10-dimensional (and higher-dimensional) space-time models, it is very helpful to use the main ideas behind fuzzification -- extension of arithmetic operations and elementary functions from exact numbers to fuzzy numbers. The resulting formalism is, from the mathematical viewpoint, somewhat more complex than the traditional fuzzy arithmetic, but it is still much simpler than the quantum field theory -- and thus, it helps to make several important ideas from foundations of modern physics much more intuitively clear.

Profile: Becoming--Stories Of Discovery And Growth, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

Colleges, too, have opportunities to define and move into their futures, although rarely as dramatically as first year students. As this issue of Profile documents, this is such a moment for UMM. Physically, our campus has changed remarkably in the past few years, and will be continuing to develop in the next few, as we complete the Social Science renovation project, the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new athletic field. Two areas covered in the pages that follow represent particularly exciting and dramatic moves for our college into its future.

How To Reconstruct The Original Shape Of A Radar Signal?, Matthew G. Averill, Gang Xiang, Vladik Kreinovich, George R. Keller, Scott A. Starks, Patrick S. Debroux, James Boehm

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

The shape of the radar signal can provide us with the additional information about the reflecting surface. However, to decrease the noise, radars use filtering, and filtering changes the shapes of the radar signal. It is therefore necessary to reconstruct the original shape of the radar signal.

Tensile Properties Of Martensitic Stainless Steels At Elevated Temperatures, Ajit K. Roy, Srinivasarao R. Kukatla, Bhagath Yarlagadda, V. N. Potluri, Martin Lewis, Brendan O'Toole Apr 2005

Tensile Properties Of Martensitic Stainless Steels At Elevated Temperatures, Ajit K. Roy, Srinivasarao R. Kukatla, Bhagath Yarlagadda, V. N. Potluri, Martin Lewis, Brendan O'Toole

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Tensile properties of quenched and tempered martensitic alloys EP-823, HT-9, and 422 were evaluated at temperatures ranging from ambient to 600 °C as a function of three different tempering times. The results indicated that the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and the failure strength were gradually reduced with increasing temperature. The ductility parameters were enhanced at elevated temperatures due to increased plastic flow. However, the tempering time did not significantly influence these properties. The evaluation of the fracture surfaces by scanning electron microscopy revealed reduced cracking and dimpled microstructures, indicating enhanced ductility at higher testing temperatures.

Transmutation of nuclear waste is currently being considered to transform long-lived isotopes to species with relatively short half-lives and reduced radioactivity through capture and decay of minor actinides and fission products. This process is intended for geologic disposal of spent nuclear fuels for shorter durations in the proposed Yucca Mountain repository. The molten lead-bismuth-eutectic will be used as a target and coolant during transmutation, which will be contained in a subsystem vessel made from materials such as austenitic (304L) and martensitic (EP-823 and HT-9) stainless steels. The structural materials used in this vessel will be subjected to welding operations and …
