Vampires In Literature: A Postmodern Study Of Bram Stoker And Anne Rice, Christina Marie Link Dec 2005

Vampires In Literature: A Postmodern Study Of Bram Stoker And Anne Rice, Christina Marie Link

Theses & Dissertations

M. H. Abrams explains that postmodern authors "blend literary genres, cultural and stylistic levels, the serious and the playful, [and] that they resist classification according to traditional literary rubrics". Bram Stoker and Anne Rice both fall into this category of postmodernism. Bram Stoker puts his own spin on the literary vampire, changing the vampire from an aristocratic figure into a monster and adding such features as shape-shifting. He also utilizes various styles throughout the novel under the pretense of several different narrators and narration sources, since Dracula is an epistolary novel that combines the different characters' journals, letters, and even …

Rhizomes For Understanding The Production Of Social Science, Gustavo Seijo Dec 2005

Rhizomes For Understanding The Production Of Social Science, Gustavo Seijo

Organization Management Journal

This article is about the social processes which produce social science knowledge. It is based on a discourse analysis of DELOS, a European research project into organizational learning in clusters of SMEs (Small to Medium Enterprises). The substantive focus is on the researchers’ core theoretical object: the “cluster of SMEs.” This construct remained a highly contested artifact which, for complex reasons, defied singular definition. The analysis draws on, among others, the labyrinthine novels of Franz Kafka and the theoretical musings of Deleuze and Guattari on rhizomic forms of organization in connection with actor-network theory. It is argued that the intrinsic …

The majority of these young people completed Year 12 in 1998, and 1999 was their first year of post-school study. About one in five members of the cohort had left school before completing Year 12 and about 60 per cent of them entered some other form of study …

Explaining The American Norm Against Litigation, Shawn J. Bayern Dec 2005

Explaining The American Norm Against Litigation, Shawn J. Bayern

Scholarly Publications

In the United States, a social norm discourages people from vindicating at least some of their rights in court. However, if courts are an instrument of justice and of sound public policy-for instance, if they provide fair compensation for injured parties and efficient incentives for potential injurers-then a norm against using courts is puzzling.

This Comment explores and evaluates explanations for the norm against litigation; the Comment's goal is to provide a plausible account of the norm. As such, the Comment is largely descriptive. However, normative implications may follow from my exploration; for instance, to the extent that an explanation …
