The Rules Of The Game: "Play In The Joints" Between The Religion Clauses, Sharon Keller Sep 2005

The Rules Of The Game: "Play In The Joints" Between The Religion Clauses, Sharon Keller

ExpressO

This article uses the case of Locke v. Davey as an exemplar of the new Establishment clause jurisprudence which has opened the door for greater governmental support of sectarian schools and enterprises. What I believe has not been truly appreciated is that the rhetorical approach that fostered the change, if followed consistently, should increase the government’s burden in justifying pressures or sacrifices of personal rights such as Joshua Davey faced in the exemplar case.

Emotional Fluency And The Discrepancy-Attribution Hypothesis, Carissa Zimmerman Sep 2005

Emotional Fluency And The Discrepancy-Attribution Hypothesis, Carissa Zimmerman

Psychology Honors Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to investigate emotional fluency within the framework of the discrepancy-attribution hypothesis. A mismatch between expected and actual fluency results in a feeling of surprisingly good fit, which can lead people to misattribute fluency gained from stimulus manipulations to pastness. Experiment 1 replicated Whittlesea s (2002) finding that words completing high constraint sentence stems were judged to have been studied in a previous phase more often than words completing low constraint sentence stems, regardless of whether the words were actually studied or not. Experiment 1 also provided support for the emotional-fluency hypothesis; participants judged emotional …

Importance Resampling For Global Illumination, Justin F. Talbot Sep 2005

Importance Resampling For Global Illumination, Justin F. Talbot

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a generalized form of Monte Carlo integration called Resampled Importance Sampling. It is based on the importance resampling sample generation technique. Resampled Importance Sampling can lead to significant variance reduction over standard Monte Carlo integration for common rendering problems. We show how to select the importance resampling parameters for near optimal variance reduction. We also combine RIS with stratification and with Multiple Importance Sampling for further variance reduction. We demonstrate the robustness of this technique on the direct lighting problem and achieve up to a 33% variance reduction over standard techniques. We also suggest using RIS as …

An Empirical Examination Of Job Stress And Management Of Emotionally-Based Behavior: Frontline Social Service Personnel Perspective, Doreen Sams Sep 2005

An Empirical Examination Of Job Stress And Management Of Emotionally-Based Behavior: Frontline Social Service Personnel Perspective, Doreen Sams

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Frontline service personnel (FSP) play an invaluable role in the marketing mix by directly influencing the customers perception of both the service organization as well as the service quality during the face-to-face delivery service encounter (Ashforth and Humphrey 1993). The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how sources of job stress for FSP such as perceived customer demands, role ambiguity, role conflict, role overload, and emotional labor and various mediators such as job autonomy, emotional intelligence, and emotion-focused coping directly and indirectly influence job stress and outcome variables such as attitudes, behaviors, physical consequences, emotional exhaustion, job performance, and …
