Crystalline Particle Packings On A Sphere With Long Range Power Law Potentials, Mark Bowick, Angelo Cacciuto, David R. Nelson, Alex Travesset
Physics - All Scholarship
The original Thomson problem of "spherical crystallography" seeks the ground state of electron shells interacting via the Coulomb potential; however one can also study crystalline ground states of particles interacting with other potentials. We focus here on long range power law interactions of the form 1/r^gamma (0 < \gamma < 2), with the classic Thomson problem given by gamma=1. At large R/a, where R is the sphere radius and a is the particle spacing, the problem can be reformulated as a continuum elastic model that depends on the Young's modulus of particles packed in the plane and the universal (independent of the pair potential) geometrical interactions between disclination defects. The energy of the continuum model can be expressed as an expansion in powers of the total number of particles, M sim (R/a)^2, with coefficients explicitly related to both geometric and potential-dependent terms. For icosahedral configurations of twelve 5-fold disclinations, the first non-trivial coefficient of the expansion agrees with explicit numerical evaluation for discrete particle arrangements to 4 significant digits; the discrepancy in the 5th digit arises from a contribution to the energy that is sensitive to the particular icosadeltahedral configuration and that is neglected in the continuum calculation. In the limit of a very large number of particles, an instability toward grain boundaries can be understood in terms of a "Debye{--}Huckel" solution, where dislocations have continuous Burgers' vector "charges". Discrete dislocations in grain boundaries for intermediate particle numbers are discussed as well.

Third Grade Retention And The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test: An Exploratory Study, Heather A. Powell
Third Grade Retention And The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test: An Exploratory Study, Heather A. Powell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Literacy is a growing national concern, resulting in federal legislation (e.g., No Child Left Behind Act) instituting higher accountability for states and schools with regard to reading instruction and remediation. As a result, Floridas statewide measure of achievement, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is now tied to retention decisions in third grade as part of the new pupil progression plan in the state. In its first year of implementation (2003), 23% of third-grade students failed the FCAT and over 28,000 were retained.
Research has consistently shown retention to be a negative experience for children; even when academic gains are …

Preparing Teachers To Create A Mainstream Science Classroom Conducive To The Needs Of English-Language Learners: A Feminist Action Research Project, Gayle A. Buck, Colette Mast, Nancy Ehlers, Elizabeth Franklin
Preparing Teachers To Create A Mainstream Science Classroom Conducive To The Needs Of English-Language Learners: A Feminist Action Research Project, Gayle A. Buck, Colette Mast, Nancy Ehlers, Elizabeth Franklin
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
A feminist action research team, which consisted of a science educator, an English-language learner (ELL) educator, a first-year science teacher, and a graduate assistant, set a goal to work together to explore the process a beginning teacher goes through to establish a classroom conducive to the needs of middle-level ELL learners. The guiding questions of the study were answered by gathering a wealth of data over the course of 5 months and taken from the classroom, planning sessions, and researchers and students. These data were collected by observations, semistructured interviews, and written document reviews. The progressive analysis ultimately revealed that: …
Words And Their Primary Associates: A Comparison Of Deaf And Hearing Students, Carol Convertino
Words And Their Primary Associates: A Comparison Of Deaf And Hearing Students, Carol Convertino
Theses
This word association study compared the primary associates given by deaf college students with those from a set of hearing norms. Forty common words were selected from the norms; twenty category names for which the primary associate was an exemplar (or member of that category) and twenty exemplars for which the primary associate was the category name. Overall, deaf students showed a similar pattern of responses to the hearing norms, although the strength of the primary associates for the deaf students was not as strong as for the hearing students. Comparing responses to the two groups of stimuli, hearing students …

A Forced March For Failing Schools: Lessons From The New York City Chancellor's District, Deinya Phenix, Dorothy Siegel, Ariel Zaltsman, Norm Fruchter
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
In the mid-nineties, the New York City Schools Chancellor created a citywide improvement zone to take over a significant proportion of the city’s lowest performing schools whose local community school districts had failed to improve them. This “Chancellor’s District” defined centralized management, rather than local control, as the critical variable necessary to initiate, enforce and ensure the implementation of school improvement. This large-scale intervention involved both a governance change and a set of capacity-building interventions presumably unavailable under local sub-district control. Our study retrospectively examined the origins, structure and components of the Chancellor’s District, and analyzed the characteristics and outcomes …

The Anchor: 2005
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.
Deaf International Students At Rit/Ntid And Their Perceptions About Learning English, Argiroula Zangana
Deaf International Students At Rit/Ntid And Their Perceptions About Learning English, Argiroula Zangana
Theses
Deaf international students are a vital part of the student population at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). Those students arrive at RIT with a variety of English skills and at various levels. The objective of this study is to investigate how deaf international students improve their English skills once they arrive at RIT /NTID. Did they improve their English skills through Spoken American English, American Sign Systems (i.e. American Sign Language and/or Signed English), and/or English classes from NTID/RIT? Furthermore, participants were asked how they felt about learning English and if their feelings changed while attending NTID/RIT. Participants were …

Drama In Education: Instructional Strategies For Teachers Of Deaf Students, Julie Stewart
Theses
Teaching tools continue to be discovered in the education field, including Deaf education. Teaching Deaf students can be challenging for teachers who want to be sure deaf students are learning. World Knowledge, applications, and developing appreciation for life long learning are several goals most teachers have for their deaf students. This thesis will focus on an innovative approach to teaching deaf students that incorporates "Drama In Education" in the classroom teaching. A workshop will be developed to prepare teachers of deaf students about Drama in Education, how to put it into practice and how to assess the students' learning from …
