The purpose of this study is to examine the various human resource processes and systems that were established by Wynn Las Vegas. With a hiring of this magnitude the human resource team at Wynn faced many unique challenges. This study records these difficulties and also the decisions that were made that allowed Wynn to overcome these obstacles. Through the examination of the Wynn Las Vegas process this study will also give other employers who are considering doing a large scale mass hiring some ideas on what they should expect regarding on line hiring. It will also show how other executives …

Determinants Of Repeat Visitation For Las Vegas “Locals” Casinos, David D. Ross Oct 2005

Determinants Of Repeat Visitation For Las Vegas “Locals” Casinos, David D. Ross

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The proliferation of gaming is unprecedented. As many states look to gaming as a source of revenue for a poor fiscal policy, this research becomes more valuable. Many people fail to make the correlation between these new jurisdictions, Tribal or Indian gaming opportunities, and the “locals” market. The argument is, not many people are traveling to Barona or Harrah’s Rincon outside of San Diego, California for their vacation from New York City. Therefore, these primary markets are considered to be more localized. Localized markets could be referred to as geographic segmentation as opposed to other segmentation strategies. The strengths of …

Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong Oct 2005

Cultural Economy: A Critical Review, Chris Gibson, Lily Kong

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

This article reviews work on 'cultural economy', particularly from within geography, and from other disciplines, where there are links to overtly geographical debates. We seek to clarify different interpretations of the term and to steer a course through this multivalency to suggest productive new research agendas. We review and critique work on cultural economy that represents a relatively straightforward economic geography, based on empirical observation while theoretically informed and driven by debates about Fordism and post-Fordism, agglomeration and cluster theory. Some of these ideas about cultural economy have proven attractive to policy-makers and we map a normative script of cultural …

The One That Got Away: Fishery Reserves In Prince Edward Island, Rusty Bittermann, Margaret E. Mccallum Oct 2005

The One That Got Away: Fishery Reserves In Prince Edward Island, Rusty Bittermann, Margaret E. Mccallum

Dalhousie Law Journal

In 1767, the British government divided Prince Edward Island into sixty-seven townships of about 20,000 acres each, and allocated all but one of these to about one hundred people who had some claim on the Crown's munificence. Subsequently, Island governments complained of their disadvantaged state in comparison with other British North American colonies, which could raise revenue by selling rights to Crown land and resources. Their complaints, although not totally unjustified, did not acknowledge the extensive and valuable lands which the Crown retained as fishery reserves. Most of the township grants reserved rights to the first 500 feet of land …

The Property Status Of Fishing Licences, David G. Henley Oct 2005

The Property Status Of Fishing Licences, David G. Henley

Dalhousie Law Journal

The property status of a fishing licence has for a long time been undecided. The judicial decisions have varied significantly on whether a fishing licence is property at common law or pursuant to various statutory definitions. The significance ofthe issue lies primarily in the financial arena. It is most often the case that the preponderance of the value in a fishing enterprise lies with the fishing licence rather than in the vessel. It is not uncommon for a lobster licence to approach one million dollars in value.' When quota is allocated to groundfish licences, the value of the package can …

The Implied Jump Risk Of Libor Rates, Kian Guan Lim, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka Oct 2005

The Implied Jump Risk Of Libor Rates, Kian Guan Lim, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper examines implied parameters from options on LIBOR futures. Jump-diffusion models are found to offer superior in-sample and out-of-sample performance when compared to their pure diffusion counterpart. The need to incorporate stochastic jump magnitudes into LIBOR dynamics is also documented. In addition, empirical evidence reveals that the jump component in LIBOR rates is important for pricing their derivatives. Furthermore, variation in jump risk often coincides with Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decisions and a small subset of macroeconomic announcements.

The Maximum Flow Algorithm Applied To The Placement And Distributed Steady-State Control Of Upfcs, Austin Armbruster, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Mariesa Crow, Michael R. Gosnell Oct 2005

The Maximum Flow Algorithm Applied To The Placement And Distributed Steady-State Control Of Upfcs, Austin Armbruster, Bruce M. Mcmillin, Mariesa Crow, Michael R. Gosnell

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

The bulk power system is one of the largest man-made networks and its size makes control an extremely difficult task. This paper presents a method to control a power network using UPFCs set to levels determined by a maximum flow (max-flow) algorithm. The graph-theory-based max-flow is applied to the power system for UPFC placement and scheduling. A distributed version of max-flow is described to coordinate the actions of the UPFCs distributed in a power network. Two sample power systems were tested using max-flow for UPFC placement and settings. The resulting system characteristics are examined over all single-line contingencies and the …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The lifetime of the Ar13+ 1s22s22p2Po3/2 metastable level was determined at the Heidelberg Electron Beam Ion Trap to be 9.573(4)(5)ms(stat)(syst). The accuracy level of one per thousand makes this measurement sensitive to quantum electrodynamic effects like the electron anomalous magnetic moment (EAMM) and to relativistic electron-electron correlation effects like the frequency-dependent Breit interaction. Theoretical predictions, adjusted for the EAMM, cluster about a lifetime that is approximately 3σ shorter than our experimental result.

Precise Calculation Of Transition Frequencies Of Hydrogen And Deuterium Based On A Least-Squares Analysis, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Svetlana A. Kotochigova, Eric Olivier Le Bigot, Peter J. Mohr, Barry N. Taylor Oct 2005

Taylor

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We combine a limited number of accurately measured transition frequencies in hydrogen and deuterium, recent quantum electrodynamics (QED) calculations, and, as an essential additional ingredient, a generalized least-squares analysis, to obtain precise and optimal predictions for hydrogen and deuterium transition frequencies. Some of the predicted transition frequencies have relative uncertainties more than an order of magnitude smaller than that of the g factor of the electron, which was previously the most accurate prediction of QED.

Renormalization-Group Analysis Of Layered Sine-Gordon Type Models, I. Nandori, Sandor Alex Nagy, Kornel Sailer, Ulrich D. Jentschura Oct 2005

Renormalization-Group Analysis Of Layered Sine-Gordon Type Models, I. Nandori, Sandor Alex Nagy, Kornel Sailer, Ulrich D. Jentschura

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We analyze the phase structure and the renormalization group (RG) flow of the generalized sine-Gordon models with nonvanishing mass terms, using the Wegner-Houghton RG method in the local potential approximation. Particular emphasis is laid upon the layered sine-Gordon (LSG) model, which is the bosonized version of the multi-flavour Schwinger model and approaches the sum of two "normal", massless sine-Gordon (SG) models in the limit of a vanishing interlayer coupling J. Another model of interest is the massive sine-Gordon (MSG) model. The leading-order approximation to the UV (ultraviolet) RG flow predicts two phases for the LSG as well as for the …

Calculation Of The One- And Two-Loop Lamb Shift For Arbitrary Excited Hydrogenic States, Andrzej Czarnecki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Krzysztof Pachucki Oct 2005

Calculation Of The One- And Two-Loop Lamb Shift For Arbitrary Excited Hydrogenic States, Andrzej Czarnecki, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Krzysztof Pachucki

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

General expressions for quantum electrodynamic corrections to the one-loop self-energy [of order α(Zα)6] and for the two-loop Lamb shift [of order α2(Zα)6] are derived. The latter includes all diagrams with closed fermion loops. The general results are valid for arbitrary excited non-S hydrogenic states and for the normalized Lamb shift difference of S states, defined as Δn=n3ΔE(nS)-ΔE(1S). We present numerical results for one-loop and two-loop corrections for excited S, P, and D states. In particular, the normalized Lamb shift difference of S states is calculated with an uncertainty of order …
