The Graeco-Roman Antecedents Of Modern Tort Law, Stuart Madden Oct 2005

The Graeco-Roman Antecedents Of Modern Tort Law, Stuart Madden

ExpressO

It was not very long ago that Western law was formed from the rib of Graeco-Roman law, and our modern Western legal systems, civil code-based and common law alike, demonstrate that lineage, and the contributions of both societies, to surcease. While other cultural influences, including those from even more ancient sources may be identifiable, this article segregates Greco-Roman law for separate analysis for purposes of manageability. This article tracks the law of early Greece and early Rome from their respective origins in myth and legend to their comprehensive codifications. For the disparities in form and content, there are nonetheless significant …

Lattice Formulation Of {\Cal N}=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory, Simon Catterall Oct 2005

Lattice Formulation Of {\Cal N}=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory, Simon Catterall

Physics - All Scholarship

We construct a lattice action for {\cal N}=4 super Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions which is local, gauge invariant, free of spectrum doubling and possesses a single exact supersymmetry. Our construction starts from the observation that the fermions of the continuum theory can be mapped into the component fields of a single real anticommuting Kahler-Dirac field. The original supersymmetry algebra then implies the existence of a nilpotent scalar supercharge Q and a corresponding set of bosonic superpartners. Using this field content we write down a Q-exact action and show that, with an appropriate change of variables, it reduces to a …

Wavelet Based Feature Extraction And Dimension Reduction For The Classification Of Human Cardiac Electrogram Depolarization Waveforms, Christopher S. De Voir Oct 2005

Wavelet Based Feature Extraction And Dimension Reduction For The Classification Of Human Cardiac Electrogram Depolarization Waveforms, Christopher S. De Voir

Dissertations and Theses

An essential task for a pacemaker or implantable defibrillator is the accurate identification of rhythm categories so that the correct electrotherapy can be administered. Because some rhythms cause a rapid dangerous drop in cardiac output, it is necessary to categorize depolarization waveforms on a beat-to-beat basis to accomplish rhythm classification as rapidly as possible. In this thesis, a depolarization waveform classifier based on the Lifting Line Wavelet Transform is described. It overcomes problems in existing rate-based event classifiers; namely, (1) they are insensitive to the conduction path of the heart rhythm and (2) they are not robust to pseudo-events. The …

Assessing “Discover Mojave” Instrument Development And Analysis: Final Report, Lori Olafson, Gregory Schraw, Michelle L. Weibel Oct 2005

Assessing “Discover Mojave” Instrument Development And Analysis: Final Report, Lori Olafson, Gregory Schraw, Michelle L. Weibel

Reports (DM)

We developed curriculum and a comprehensive assessment plan to determine whether hands-on outdoor recreation events promote knowledge, attitudes, and performance among at-risk urban children. Knowledge, attitude, and performance assessments were developed, refined and conducted through various stages based on cultural and language barriers as well a variety of age groups participating within the events. Findings revealed that knowledge, attitudes, and performance increased substantially as a result of participating in the outdoor recreation events. We conclude that the implementation and assessment of the program is strong. We also make several recommendations for future programs.

An Atlas Of Forecasted Molecular Data. 2. Vibration Frequencies Of Main-Group And Transition-Metal Neutral Gas-Phase Diatomic Molecules In The Ground State, W. Bradford Davis, Ray Hefferlin Oct 2005

An Atlas Of Forecasted Molecular Data. 2. Vibration Frequencies Of Main-Group And Transition-Metal Neutral Gas-Phase Diatomic Molecules In The Ground State, W. Bradford Davis, Ray Hefferlin

Faculty Works

This atlas of diatomic-molecular vibration frequencies parallels the previously offered Atlas of Internuclear Separations. The Atlas was produced by mining the data from Huber and Herzberg and training neural network software to forecast new data. New protocols were employed with the powerful software, which was originally designed for forecasting the financial markets. The Atlas presents 1920 additional vibration frequencies for use until critical tables are available to fill the needs more precisely. The precision of the predictions is characterized by the average fractional 1% confidence limit, that is, 10.66%. The accuracies of the predictions are determined in two ways. First, …

Dirac-Kähler Fermions And Exact Lattice Supersymmetry, Simon Catterall Oct 2005

Dirac-Kähler Fermions And Exact Lattice Supersymmetry, Simon Catterall

Physics - All Scholarship

We discuss a new approach to putting supersymmetric theories on the lattice. The basic idea is to start from a {\it twisted} formulation of the underlying supersymmetric theory in which the fermions are represented as grassmann valued antisymmetric tensor fields. The original supersymmetry algebra is replaced by a twisted algebra which contains a scalar nilpotent supercharge Q. Furthermore the action of the theory can then be written as the Q-variation of some function. The case of {\cal N}=2 super Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions is discussed in some detail. We then present our proposal for discretizing this theory and derive …

Murals And The Development Of Merchant Activity At Chichen Itza, De Luna Lucha Aztzin Martinez Oct 2005

Murals And The Development Of Merchant Activity At Chichen Itza, De Luna Lucha Aztzin Martinez

Theses and Dissertations

The militaristic interpretations of the art of Chichen Itza, Yucatán, Mexico, fails to sufficiently describe its entire decorative program. Absent from discussions of the art tradition is the apparent focus on merchant activity in the city. The influence and power of merchants strengthened during the transition from the Classic to Postclassic in Mesoamerica. With an increase in demand of foreign goods, new exchange relationships developed between centers in Central Mexico, the Gulf, and Maya region. As a result, several cultural regions participated in a vast economic network that created political alliances and syncretic art styles. Focusing on the mural tradition …
