Quasi-Elastic Scattering Of Ultracold Neutrons, Oh-Sun Kwon Jan 2005

Quasi-Elastic Scattering Of Ultracold Neutrons, Oh-Sun Kwon

Open Access Dissertations

Ultracold neutrons (UCN) are neutrons of very low energies, enough to undergo total reflection from a given surface at any angle of incidence. As a result, they can be confined to a material trap when their kinetic energies are smaller than the Fermi potential of the trap material. However, they can be lost from the trap via nuclear capture reaction and thermal inelastic scattering from the trap surface. They can also be lost by quasi-elastic scattering when the energy gain is sufficient to exceed the Fermi potential. Possible models of UCN quasi-elastic scattering are interactions with hydrogen diffusing in an …

The Effects Of A Kit-Based Science Curriculum And Teacher Characteristics On Students' Attitude Toward Science, Sharon K. Lee Jan 2005

The Effects Of A Kit-Based Science Curriculum And Teacher Characteristics On Students' Attitude Toward Science, Sharon K. Lee

Open Access Dissertations

This study examines 5th and 8th grade students' (N = 1063) attitude toward science in relation to science instruction, science achievement, and teacher characteristics. One group of students is from districts implementing kit-based, inquiry science curriculum, accompanied by extensive science professional development. The comparison group is from districts that have other, more traditional, types of science curriculum and provide little science professional development for teachers. Data were gathered using a paper and pencil science test while attitude and teacher instructional characteristics were collected from surveys and questionnaires. Results show 5th grade students having a significantly more positive attitude toward science …

Hydrography, Suspended Sediments, Chlorophyll A, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter And Optical Characteristics Of The Pearl River (Zhujiang) Estuary During July And November, 1998, Wendy Lynn Woods Jan 2005

Hydrography, Suspended Sediments, Chlorophyll A, Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter And Optical Characteristics Of The Pearl River (Zhujiang) Estuary During July And November, 1998, Wendy Lynn Woods

Open Access Dissertations

The Pearl River (Zhujiang) is the second largest river in China and the largest in southern China, with a strongly seasonal discharge driven by Asian monsoon rainfall patterns. Optical characteristics of the plume region are expected to strongly affect light limitation of primary production and the interpretation of satellite remote sensing data. The river is enriched with nutrients from agriculture, aquaculture, and human waste disposal, and experiences frequent phytoplankton blooms. An understanding of factors controlling phytoplankton primary production is currently lacking, but is essential for effective water quality management. This study reports on the hydrography (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, …

Do High School Advisory Programs Promote Personalization? Correlates Of School Belonging, Phyllis C. Meloro Jan 2005

Do High School Advisory Programs Promote Personalization? Correlates Of School Belonging, Phyllis C. Meloro

Open Access Dissertations

Personalization of our nation's high schools has been identified as an important yet often overlooked component of successful educational reform. It is a result of having lasting positive relationships with teachers leading to a feeling of connectedness to their school. Research supports the role of personalization and school belongingness through their correlation with a number of positive educational and behavioral outcomes. High sense of school belonging is associated with an increase in educational variables such as high grades and academic motivation, and a decrease in school drop out and behavior problems. This study examined the relationship between an advisory program …

The Representation Of Race In Composition Studies And Stories, Carole Eileen Center Jan 2005

The Representation Of Race In Composition Studies And Stories, Carole Eileen Center

Open Access Dissertations

Nonwhite students have limited access to and limited success in graduating from US institutions of higher education. First-year required composition courses and other writing requirements can act as barriers to college matriculation. Yet composition studies, which has as its focus writing students and student writing, has yet to commit to a thorough examination of all the factors that affect the experience of nonwhite students in composition classes. In order to engage in inquiry into the difference that race makes in students' classroom experiences, composition teacher-researchers must represent the race of those involved in classroom scenes because, as race studies (whiteness …

Road Pricing In Theory And Practice: A Canadian Perspective, David G. Duff, Carl Irvine Jan 2005

Road Pricing In Theory And Practice: A Canadian Perspective, David G. Duff, Carl Irvine

All Faculty Publications

Like other developed countries, Canada experienced massive increases in road transportation since the end of the Second World War. At first, Canadian governments attempted to match the growing demand for road transportation by improving the quality and capacity of roads and highways - significantly increasing the extent of paved roadways and introducing a national highway system supported by federal shared-cost funding. Since the 1970s, however, Canadian governments have been less willing to invest in roads and highways, as growing environmental concerns lessened public enthusiasm for automobiles and urban expressways in particular. At the same time, government support for public transit …

Especially The Parchments, Kenneth O. Gangel Ph.D

The Christian Librarian

It was August of 1974. We had just moved to Miami Springs, Florida, where on july 1 I took up my duties as president of Miami Christian College, having left a most enviable position at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and a bewildered band of faculty friends. The man I hired to build shelving around the room that would become my study had finished his work and I was in the process of sorting and shelving some 4,000 books. In the midst of the effort, my wife came into the room, watched for a while silently, and finally asked the question, …

The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler Jan 2005

The Meaning Of Moscow: "Non-Lethal" Weapons And International Law In The Early 21st Century, David P. Fidler

Articles by Maurer Faculty

At the intersection of new weapon technologies and international humanitarian law, so-called "non-lethal" weapons have become an area of particular interest. This article analyses the relationship between "non-lethal" weapons and international law in the early 21st century by focusing on the most seminal incident to date in the short history of the "non-lethal" weapons debate, the use of an incapacitating chemical to end a terrorist attack on a Moscow theatre in October 2002. This tragic incident has shown that rapid technological change will continue to stress international law on the development and use of weaponry but in ways more politically …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis I will illuminate on the process of not only acting in a stage performance, but the writing of the show itself and the inspiration involved. By taking examples from different levels in my theatre training and my life I will show the journey from undergrad to MFA. I will also illustrate the growth and struggle in accomplishing a greater understanding for theatre and it’s stage. Bang, Bang!! was a real show that came naturally to an area that was long overdue for a new type of theatre. The setting of the show (West Virginia) and the audience …

"Oleanna" And The Road To Wisdom., Andrew H. Lyons Jan 2005

"Oleanna" And The Road To Wisdom., Andrew H. Lyons

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Oleanna, originally written and produced in 1992, was presented by WVU’s Division of Theatre and Dance in September 2004. While I initially perceived the challenges of playing John as rather straightforward, I soon learned that there is a great deal more to Mamet’s character than I gave him credit for. Oleanna proves an excellent example of Mamet’s use of elliptical dialogue, especially in the telephone calls, and although I initially approached this as a purely technical challenge I was delighted to find very real creative challenges lurking within. The same is true of the role that status plays in the …

Microstructure Evaluations And Thermomechanical Properties Of Spinel (Magnesium Aluminum Oxide) Dispersed Molybdenum Alloys., Chee Kiat Lee Jan 2005

Microstructure Evaluations And Thermomechanical Properties Of Spinel (Magnesium Aluminum Oxide) Dispersed Molybdenum Alloys., Chee Kiat Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Molybdenum based alloys are ductilized by dispersing MgAl2O4 or NiAl2O4 spinel particle. These additions of spinel particles getter impurities, such as Nitrogen, from the base alloys which render its ductility. The introduction of fine dispersions has also been postulated to improve ductility in body centered cubic (BCC) metals such as Mo, by acting as a dislocation source or reducing dislocation pile ups at grain boundaries. The spinel particles, on the other hand, would also act as local notches, crack initiation sites, which are detrimental to the ductilization. Further improvement of material processing, therefore, is very important. The objective of this …

Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling Jan 2005

Community Factors And Educational Attainment In A North Appalachian Area., Olena L. Welling

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Regression analysis suggests that district-to-district differences in high school completion rates are positively related to post-high school economic and educational opportunities. High school completion rates are negatively related to the costs of schools. Dropping out of high school is the students’ attempt to rationally respond to their environment and social circumstances. Thus, dropping out can be interpreted as a rational phenomenon. Students are calculating, often unself-consciously, the costs of staying in school versus the returns to education. Students are acting rational in responding to the constraints and opportunities of their social circumstances. District-level high school completion rates were regressed on …

The Integration Of Spiritual And Religious Issues In Racial-Cultural Psychology And Counseling., Timothy B. Smith, P Scott Richards Jan 2005

The Integration Of Spiritual And Religious Issues In Racial-Cultural Psychology And Counseling., Timothy B. Smith, P Scott Richards

Faculty Publications

A new movement has begun. Spirituality and religion are being integrated into racial-cultural psychology and counseling. This chapter will review the literature that is the basis of that movement. We first describe the historical forces alluded to by Trimble (2000) that until only recently have minimized the relevance of religion and spirituality to psychological research and practice. We then summarize the potential benefits and concerns about incorporating spiritual and religious perspectives into research and practice that have been suggested in publications of the past 30 years. To demonstrate that religion and spirituality are central to racial-cultural psychology and counseling, literature …

Recognition Of Affective Prosody By Speakers Of English As A First Or Foreign Language, Christopher Dromey, Jose Silveira, Paul Sandor Jan 2005

Recognition Of Affective Prosody By Speakers Of English As A First Or Foreign Language, Christopher Dromey, Jose Silveira, Paul Sandor

Faculty Publications

Adults who were fluent in English, and who grew up speaking English or one of 21 other languages listened to words spoken with angry or neutral intonation. We measured the accuracy with which the listeners identified the intended emotion. English mother tongue (EMT) polyglots scored higher than other mother tongue (OMT) listeners, whereas EMT monoglots did not. Women were significantly more accurate than men across the three listener groups. There was a modest inverse correlation between accuracy and age. The learning of a second language may have helped the EMT polyglots develop additional perceptual skills in decoding speech emotion in …

The Book Of Breathings In Its Place, Kerry M. Muhlestein Jan 2005

The Book Of Breathings In Its Place, Kerry M. Muhlestein

Faculty Publications

Michael D. Rhodes's publication on the Hor Book of Breathings is an unusual book in many ways. It is a scholarly Egyptological work, dealing with an understudied type of text from an understudied era of Egyptian history, appearing in the midst of a series that has been dedicated to the exploration of a book considered to be scripture by the Latter-day Saints. Additionally, it deals with what many have incorrectly considered to be a text that can be used to test the revelatory ability of the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints.

A Unified Design Framework For Learning Objects And Educational Discourse, David Wiley, Sandie Waters Jan 2005

A Unified Design Framework For Learning Objects And Educational Discourse, David Wiley, Sandie Waters

Faculty Publications

Instructional design is largely a matter of scope and sequence, and designing instruction with learning objections is no exception. Traditionally, learning objects are considered atomic units of educational content, and designing instruction with learning objects means scoping instructional messages and determining sequences for delivering the messages. We argue that instructional methods that rely heavily on social interaction can be implemented with learning objects when these are understood to be reusable scaffolds for scoping and sequencing what learners say to each other during instructional interactions.

These patterns were evident in several cases across many different disciplines, indicating they might be generalizable to many different situations and contexts. In our interviews, we identified what technologies these professors were …

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2005

The Case For Sidney Rigdon As Author Of The Lectures On Faith, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

Twentieth century attempts to include the "Lectures on Faith" in the writings of Joseph Smith, Jr., provoked this comprehensive survey of historical evidence and carefully designed authorship testing of the text. Every credible approach reaches the same conclusion. Sidney Rigdon wrote the Lectures on Faith, likely without help from Joseph Smith or any others. These Lectures are characterized by both teachings and language that Rigdon may have retained from his recent discipleship with Alexander Campbell. The published Lectures follow both the form and content of lectures given and then published by frontier phenomenon Charles Finney. The decision to insert these …

The paper is augmented with movie files that demonstrate the functionality of the UAV and its control software.

Should Ideology Matter In Selecting Federal Judges? Ground Rules For The Debate, Dawn E. Johnsen Jan 2005

Should Ideology Matter In Selecting Federal Judges? Ground Rules For The Debate, Dawn E. Johnsen

Articles by Maurer Faculty

A recurring constitutional controversy of great practical and political importance concerns the criteria Presidents and Senators should use in selecting federal judges. Particularly contentious is the relevance of what sometimes is described as a prospective judge's ideology, or alternatively, judicial philosophy and views on substantive questions of law. This essay seeks to promote principled and productive discussion by proposing five ground rules to govern debate by all participants regarding appropriate judicial selection criteria. Because the continued controversy does not simply reflect principled disagreement on the merits, progress may be encouraged by focusing on deficiencies in current public discourse, including discouraging …

The Determinants Of State Work Attachment Strategy Choices And The Effects Of Work Attachment Strategies On Welfare Recipients, Former Recipients, And Poverty., Kyoung Hag Lee

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores how national factors such as the high performance bonus, work participation rate penalty, and caseload reduction credits from federal government influence state work attachment strategy choices. In addition, this study examines the effects of state work attachment strategies, such as lifetime limits, sanctions, and work requirements, on the employment and earning outcomes for welfare recipients in various states, along with the poverty rates in those states and the employment and economic status of former welfare recipients. Using three multivariate regression methods such as OLS regression, logistic regression, and ordered logistic regression using SPSS, this study analyzes administrative …

Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom Jan 2005

Understanding The Coach -Athlete Dyad: The Impact Of Educational Interventions On Perceptions And Psychosocial Variables., Lindsey C. Blom

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

With the understanding that coaches have a direct impact on the athletes with whom they work (Libman, 1998) and with the knowledge that this influence is complex (Weiss & Hayashi, 1996), it can be assumed that coaching education is of the utmost importance. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the PASS IT Back program developed to help coaches address their specific players' perceptions and preferences for the coach-athlete relationship. Nine boys' high school soccer coaches and their respective teams were randomly placed in one of three categories: (1) control group, (2) feedback group receiving information about players' perceptions …

Laying Down The Law: Bringing Down The Legal Cartel In Real Estate Settlement Services And Beyond, Margaret O. Rentz Jan 2005

Laying Down The Law: Bringing Down The Legal Cartel In Real Estate Settlement Services And Beyond, Margaret O. Rentz

Georgia Law Review

America is in the midst of an explosion in the demand for legal services, yet few Americans can afford to pay the ever-increasing cost of legal fees and are thus continually deprived of access to the legal system. Non lawyers have responded to this problem by entering the market and attempting to provide basic legal services at deeply discounted rates. Under the guise of "consumer protection," the bar has responded by blocking non lawyers from 'practicing law" with unauthorized practice statutes. A debate has emerged over whether UPL statutes actually serve American consumers or merely guard the legal cartel's economic …
