Reconfigurable Wireless Sensor Platform For Training And Research In Networked Embedded Systems, Oscar V. Gonzalez Jan 2005

Reconfigurable Wireless Sensor Platform For Training And Research In Networked Embedded Systems, Oscar V. Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Ever since the University of California, Berkeley released the first commercial Wireless Sensor Network, (WSN), "mote", applications that employ the WSN technology have increased many fold. There are many kinds of prototypes and architectures for WSNs that are being developed by major communication companies. Due to the lack of a common standard for different physical and MAC layer protocols, interoperability among the wireless systems is constrained. Additionally, remote sensing capability, reconfigurability and interoperability have not yet been designed. In the current platforms hardware upgrading has to be performed on-site by replacing the old sensors with new ones. This procedure increases …

The Importance Of Retrieval Failures To Long-Term Retention: A Metacognitive Explanation Of The Spacing Effect, Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall Jan 2005

The Importance Of Retrieval Failures To Long-Term Retention: A Metacognitive Explanation Of The Spacing Effect, Harry P. Bahrick, Lynda K. Hall

All Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Encoding strategies vary in their duration of effectiveness, and individuals can best identify and modify strategies that yield effects of short duration on the basis of retrieval failures. Multiple study sessions with long inter-session intervals are better than massed training at providing discriminative feedback that identifies encoding strategies of short duration. We report two investigations in which long intervals between study sessions yield substantial benefits to long-term retention, at a cost of only moderately longer individual study sessions. When individuals monitor and control encoding over an extended period, targets yielding the largest number of retrieval failures contribute substantially to the …

International Contracting Meets Information Technology: Tales From A Transpacific Seminar, Daniel H. Foote

Articles

The following account is in essence a personal memoir concerning the first year of what, at the time, was a novel course offering: an international negotiation simulation, conducted transnationally, in which teams of students from the University of Tokyo utilized e-mail, videoconference facilities, and other resources to negotiate a major acquisition agreement with teams of students from the University of Washington. I originally wrote the account in 2001. As of this writing, in early 2005, we have just completed the fifth year of the course; and in the interim, professors at a number of other universities have established courses along …

The Priest-Penitent Privilege – An Hibernocentric Exercise In Postcolonial Jurisprudence, Walter J. Walsh Jan 2005

The Priest-Penitent Privilege – An Hibernocentric Exercise In Postcolonial Jurisprudence, Walter J. Walsh

Articles

Although much has been written on the history of the priest-penitent privilege, this Article will show that such writing tends toward an unconscious, but strong, anglocentric tilt. It seems that no scholar has tried to locate and interpret all the Irish and American sources that inspired this initially hibernocentric, later more generally American, postcolonial deviation from the English common law. Since the Second World War, the significance of Philips and its 1828 New York codification have gained widespread recognition, but the scholarly inquiry has never advanced in any truly historical fashion. This article is thus the first history of the …

Preliminary Study Of Specific Symptoms Experienced By Individuals With Bipolar Disorder , Gail Reichman Mancini Jan 2005

Preliminary Study Of Specific Symptoms Experienced By Individuals With Bipolar Disorder , Gail Reichman Mancini

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

The present study attempted to empirically identify symptoms of bipolar disorder to define a more accurate clinical description. A group of 30 individuals with a formal diagnosis of bipolar disorder, who had joined a support group as outpatients, a comparison group of 30 individuals with unipolar depression from an outpatient support group, and 30 nonpatient adults were administered identical measures of symptoms. Results suggested that individuals with bipolar disorder endorsed symptoms correlated with paranoia to a greater degree than individuals with unipolar disorder or nonpatient adults. In addition, symptoms of hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, global severity and psychoticism, as …

Judicial Selection And Democratic Theory: Demand, Supply, And Life Tenure, Judith Resnik Jan 2005

Judicial Selection And Democratic Theory: Demand, Supply, And Life Tenure, Judith Resnik

Cardozo Law Review

How ought a democracy select its judges? Critics in Canada, England, and Wales invoke the democratic values of accountability and transparency to call for a diminution in prime ministerial control over judicial appointments. In the United States, Article III of the Constitution's text directs that the President nominate - with the advice and consent of the Senate - life-tenured federal judges. Bitter conflicts about particular nominees have produced many proposals for changes of that system. And in those states that rely on various forms of judicial election, concerns focus on funding and campaigning. In short, both globally and locally, democracies …

The Svetlana In Me: How I Embraced By Turkish Identity In Order To Play A Russian/Estonian For An American Audience., Setenay Yener

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

There are actors of all cultures and nationalities, and when exercising their craft in another culture; that task becomes a challenging experience. This thesis explores my personal journey as I exercised the acting craft in a culture that is not my own. Specifically, it examines my experience of creating the role of Svetlana, in West Virginia University’s production of Kolonists, a play that explores two cultures, both different than my own and my audience’s. The introduction section, outlines why I was driven to this study, and the discoveries I made, along with a play synopsis. The following sections examine the …

"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich Jan 2005

"Old England In Perfection": Historical Arguments In The Jewish Naturalization Controversy Of 1753., Philip J. Hnatkovich

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This study explores the role of historical arguments in the pamphlets of the Jewish Naturalization Controversy of 1753. Arguments made from the basis of medieval English history were among the most common in the controversy and they are key to explaining not only the origins and outcome of the Jew Bill episode, but also the underlying religious and political assumptions of the eighteenth-century English political nation. An examination of these pamphlets suggests that the conflict was due to latent antisemitism and a distinctive form of political identity, both of which were inextricably connected with Constitutionalist traditions of history and law. …

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick Jan 2005

The Monyton Diaspora: A History Of The Middle Ohio River Valley, 1640-1700., Isaac J. Emrick

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

During the seventeenth century a vibrant group of Native Americans, the Monytons, controlled southern West Virginia and northeastern Kentucky. The effects of contact with Europeans destabilized their societies as far inland as the Ohio Valley. This began the process which eventually pushed most Monytons from the region. The Five Nations Iroquois, pressured by social changes farther north, attacked the Monytons further drawing people out of the Ohio Valley. A growing southern Indian slave trade also contributed to the decay of Monyton dominance in the region. A central point in this thesis is that Monytons formed and reformed traditions to deal …

Foraminiferal Assemblages As Bioindicators Of Potentially Toxic Elements In Biscayne Bay, Florida, Elizabeth A. Carnahan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Heavy-metal pollution is an issue of concern in estuaries such as Biscayne Bay that are heavily influenced by agricultural, urban, and harbor activities. The goals of this study were to provide a “state of the bay” assessment that can be used to interpret changes that have occurred over the past 60 years in Biscayne Bay, to provide a baseline to compare changes in the ecosystems during and after execution of the Comprehensive Everglades Restorations Plan (CERP), and to determine if benthic foraminiferal assemblages in Biscayne Bay reflect heavy-metal contamination in sediments.

Surficial samples were collected at 147 sites throughout the …
