School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Oral health studies conducted so far in Nigeria have documented prevalence and incidence of dental disease using traditional clinical measures. However none have investigated the use of an oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) instrument to document oral health outcomes. The aims of this study are: to describe how oral health affects and impacts quality of life (QoL) and to explore the association between these affects and the oral health care seeking behavior of adults in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.

Methods

A cross-sectional survey recruited 356 adults aged 18–64 years from two large hospital outpatient departments and from …

The Intention of the Settlor Under the Uniform Trust Code: Whose Property Is It, Anyway?

The question of the extent to which the owner of property may transfer it gratuitously, subject to enforceable restrictions on alienability and use, has a long history. To protect the living from control by the dead, as well as the alienability of property, the law traditionally has refused to enforce some such restrictions. Opposing those interests, however, is the interest in respecting the freedom of the owner of property to dispose of it subject to whatever restrictions he or she chooses to impose.

The Uniform …

Alice In Wonderland Meets The U.S. Patent System, Jay Dratler Jan 2005

Alice In Wonderland Meets The U.S. Patent System, Jay Dratler

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Among the joys of being a professor, as distinguished from practicing law, are the leisure and incentive to think and write about the big picture. Another joy is being able to say what you really think. We professors don't have to focus on attracting clients or maintaining an impression of studied understatement and moderation for judges and juries.

In this talk, I'm going to exercise both of these prerogatives. I've been thinking about the big picture in patents for over a quarter century, and I'm more worried than I've ever been.

Let me begin by making my usual (and truthful) …

Spendthrift And Discretionary Trusts: Alive And Well Under The Uniform Trust Code, Alan Newman

Spendthrift and Discretionary Trusts: Alive and Well under the Uniform Trust Code

Among the provisions of the Uniform Trust Code (“UTC” or the “Code”) that have attracted the most attention are those of Article 5: Creditor’s Claims; Spendthrift and Discretionary Trusts. Although much of the UTC is a codification of the common law of trusts, there are many differences among the states in their handling of various creditors’ rights issues, and many jurisdictions have no law on some of those issues. As a result, there is no well-accepted, established common law on some of the issues addressed by Article 5. …

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper Jan 2005

In Praise Of Carbon: Genre And The 1996 Nobel Lectures In Chemistry By Christian Fredrick Casper, Christian Fredrick Casper

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Using genre theory along with the hierarchy of scientific statement types of Latour and Woolgar (1979) and the scientific stases and scientific topoi of Prelli (1989), this thesis analyzes the three Nobel lectures in chemistry from 1996 to discern the characteristics of ceremonial discourse in science and its relation to scientific ethos. Throughout, the Nobel lectures are analyzed in reference to the original research reports published in the scientific literature. The unique social context of the Nobel lectures results in a distinct genre with textual characteristics that include statements with little moderation or hedging, arguments for the long-term significance of …

Critical Thinking Straight From The Heart, Seow Hon Tan

The state of the hearts of our young people, specifically whether they have the moral courage to stand up for what they believe in, is in the spotlight again with this newspaper's upcoming Youthink pages intended to showcase their views. The Youthink pages might go some way to show if the concern with our youth is well-founded. An interesting issue is raised: What exactly is critical thinking?

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew Jan 2005

Ozone Degradation Of Off-Flavors In Catfish, Tameka Lashon Dew

LSU Master's Theses

In the United States aquaculture is a billion dollar industry. Aquaculture is essentially the production of aquatic organisms under controlled conditions. Although conditions are controlled to a certain degree, absolute control is not possible. This reason alone is a huge problem that can cost the industry millions of dollars a year. In catfish, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol are two compounds are primarily responsible for imparting a musty/earthy off-flavor. Off- flavors are secondary metabolites of some blue-green algae and actinomycete bacteria. When present in fish tissue they create an undesirable taste. Different approaches have been used in order to alleviate the problem …
