Integrated High Speed Intelligent Utility Tie Unit For Disbursed/Renewable Generation Facilities, Worakarn Wongsaichua

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

After experiencing the price hikes and rotating blackouts in California, the disbursed or distributed generation (DG) is considered as one of the most attractive alternatives for future utility industry. In addition to the conventional DG that uses fossil-fuel to generate power, the DG via renewable energy is of interest due to the environmental concern. Fuel cell and photovoltaic are the most promising technologies for the urban residential and small commercial users. For economic and reliability purposes, it is desirable for these facilities to be interconnected with the utility grid to perform peak shaving, demand reduction, and to serve as emergency …

Selective Object Stabilization For Home Video Consumers, Zailiang Pan, Chong-Wah Ngo Nov 2005

Selective Object Stabilization For Home Video Consumers, Zailiang Pan, Chong-Wah Ngo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper describes a unified approach for video stabilization. The essential goal is to stabilize image sequences that consist of moving foreground objects, which appear frequently in today's home videos captured by hand-held consumer cameras. Our proposed techniques mainly, rely on the analysis of;motion content. Three major components area initialization, segmentation and stabilization. In motion initialization, we propose a novel algorithm to efficiently search for the best possible frame in a sequence to start segmentation. Our segmentation algorithm is based on Expectation-Maximization (EM) framework which provides the mechanism for simultaneous estimation of motion models and their layers of support. Based …

Increased Agonistic Behavior In Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) In Monteverde, Costa Rica With A Reduction Of Food At Artificial Feeders, November 2005, Taegan A. Mcmahon

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

This study looked at the change in agonistic behaviors of hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae) with the reduction of an established food source at la Estación Biológica de Monteverde (1567m elevation), Costa Rica. There were three treatment periods: three feeders (ten days), one feeder (six days; reduction of food source), and three feeders (four days) between October 23 and November 14, 2005. The agonistic behaviors were the number of agonistic behaviors recorded, as well as the species composition of aggressors versus recipients. Over the three treatment periods there was an increase in hummingbird visits (treatment one to treatment two: p = 0.0030; …

Selective Bromeliad Foraging In Cebus Capucinus Along A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest Edge, November 2005, Vanessa Machen Nov 2005

Selective Bromeliad Foraging In Cebus Capucinus Along A Tropical Premontane Wet Forest Edge, November 2005, Vanessa Machen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Herbivores of the Neotropics are generally highly selective in their foraging behavior. Cebus capucinus (Primates: Cebidae), an omnivore, has been observed tearing apart and chewing on the leaves of bromeliads in the Upper San Luis valley, Costa Rica. This study examines the use of bromeliads by Cebus capucinus. Specifically, I consider the role of plant size, leaf water content and toughness in determining which bromeliads and which leaves C. capucinus selects. Comparing intact to torn bromeliads based on size, this study determined that C. capucinus selects small- and medium-sized plants. Leaves in the intermediate position of the rosette were also …

Seed Predation On Persea Americana By Dasyprocta Punctata In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2005, Gregory Paul Burkard Jr.

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Dasyprocta punctata (Rodentia: Dasyproctidae), a scatter-hoarding rodent, plays an important role in seedling recruitment and tropical forest composition. (Herrera and Pellmyr 2002) The purpose of this study was to see if D. punctata maximizes its fitness by behaving as a density-dependent forager, and if the scatter-hoarding caching behavior of D. punctata is aiding the fitness of Persea americana (Lauraceae). P. americana seeds were presented to D. punctata in three distinct densities at the Santuario Ecológico in Cerro Plano, Costa Rica to observe individual seed fate. No significant difference was found for the fates of P. americana seeds between the three …

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski Nov 2005

Distributions Of Epiphytic Orchids And Bromeliads On Secondary Forest And Pasture Trees, November 2005, Greta Brom-Palkowski

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The locations and densities of epiphytic orchids and bromeliads growing on host trees are influenced greatly by differences in epiphyte requirements for light, moisture and nutrients. Because these factors differ greatly between minimally and highly disturbed habitats, epiphytic composition may also be altered. This study examined changes in epiphytic orchid and bromeliad density between hosts in secondary forest and pasture. Fifteen trees in each habitat type were censused for the abundance of orchids and bromeliads in different parts of the trees. Results indicated that the highest concentration of both orchids and bromeliads is in the pasture. In addition, in both …

The Genre Of Traditional Literature Influences Student Writing, Timothy G. Weih Nov 2005

The Genre Of Traditional Literature Influences Student Writing, Timothy G. Weih

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article describes a research study exploring the question: What influence will reading and discussing traditional literature have upon students' narrative writing? The setting for the study was a fifth grade classroom that was part of a university laboratory school. Students listened to and discussed Native American folktales and then wrote their own, self-created narrative. Results indicated that students blended elements from the folktales with elements from their own cultures.

The Role Of Size And Defensive Compounds In Mate Choice By Nyssodesmus Python (Polydesmida: Platyrhacidae), November 2005, Mercedes Burns Nov 2005

The Role Of Size And Defensive Compounds In Mate Choice By Nyssodesmus Python (Polydesmida: Platyrhacidae), November 2005, Mercedes Burns

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Large mates are preferred in a variety of species, presumably because larger size typically confers greater fitness. In chemically protected species, mates may prefer more toxic partners for the same reason. The common forest millipede Nyssodesmus python displays sexual dimorphism in body size and also produces a defensive compound containing hydrogen cyanide, making it an organism well suited to an experiment on mate preferences highlighting both size and presence of defense compounds. Here, 32 mate choice experiments showed a statistically significant preference between both sexes for larger mates; however, preference for mates with differing hydrogen cyanide ranks (based on a …

Mycorrhizal Fungi In Aerial And Terrestrial Roots Of An Epiphytic And Two Terrestrial Species Of Orchidaceae, November 2005, Derren A.R. Eaton Nov 2005

Mycorrhizal Fungi In Aerial And Terrestrial Roots Of An Epiphytic And Two Terrestrial Species Of Orchidaceae, November 2005, Derren A.R. Eaton

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Very little is known about the mycorrhizal relationships of Costa Rican orchids, and even less is known about differences in the presence of mycorrhizae between aerial and substrate roots. All orchids require mycorrhizal symbionts during their germination stage, but few studies have examined mycorrhizal relationships in adult orchids. Aerial and substrate roots from three closely related species of Orchidaceae (two terrestrial and one epiphytic) were collected and examined for the presence of mycorrhizal fungi. Mycorrhizal fungi were found in 45 of 51 individuals. The epiphytic species exhibited a much lower occurrence of mycorrhizae in its aerial roots than the two …

Extra Extrafloral Nectaries And Anti-Herbivory Protection In Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2005, Camryn Pennington Nov 2005

Extra Extrafloral Nectaries And Anti-Herbivory Protection In Inga Sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae), November 2005, Camryn Pennington

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) in plants are known to attract insects such as ants and wasps that drink nectar and in turn protect the plant from herbivores (Bentley 1977). In this study, ten year old Inga sierrae (Fabaceae: Mimosaceae) trees planted on a fallow pasture at 1535 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica have been observed to have extra EFNs on their leaflets in addition to the normal three located on the rachis between the leaflet pairs. The leaves of 20 trees were sampled to determine the local distribution of EFN number. Percent herbivory was determined for leaves with a varying number …

Terrestrial Macroinvertebrate Fauna Under Logs In Primary And Secondary Forest, November 2005, Erica Hoaglund Nov 2005

Terrestrial Macroinvertebrate Fauna Under Logs In Primary And Secondary Forest, November 2005, Erica Hoaglund

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Terrestrial macroinvertebrates are an important yet understudied group. They are present in all types of tropical forests and, due to their services as decomposers, are essential for the maintenance of a productive system. The purpose of this study was to determine if there were significant differences in diversity and community composition between macroinvertebrate communities in the primary versus secondary lower montane wet forest of Monteverde, Costa Rica. Macroinvertebrates were collected from under 20 logs in primary and 20 logs in secondary forest. Primary forest had a higher diversity of macroinvertebrates (H’ = 2.5) than secondary forest (H’ = 2.05). Primary …

Fungi serve important roles in natural systems and have strong economic and social consequences for human populations. A database of the macrofungi of the Monteverde Reserve was created to ease identification and facilitate research on local macrofungi. The database includes 30 species, with 18 families and 22 genera represented. The database was organized in a system of nested folders, providing both morphological and taxonomic keys. Information files were created for each species, including digital photographs of specimens and spore prints (when applicable), and taxonomic, microhabitat, growth, and morphological data. This database provides a structure for future cataloguing and identification, with …

Effect Of Herbivory On Succession Of Forest Light Gaps, November 2005, Toby Jacobs Nov 2005

Effect Of Herbivory On Succession Of Forest Light Gaps, November 2005, Toby Jacobs

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Effects of herbivory have been seen to vary according to the particular growth form of a plant and its habitat. The idea that these factors can interact to determine the nature of gap succession has been suggested but has not yet been thoroughly explored. Leaves of pioneer, understory, and canopy plants were collected and analyzed to quantify herbivory levels on each growth form. Herbivory was found to be higher in gaps (p = 0.0015), and this was true to varying degrees with respect to growth forms and single families. Results suggest that herbivory is not the main factor influencing instantaneous …
