What Is New In The New Toefl-Ibt 2006 Test Format?, Alla Zareva Jan 2005

What Is New In The New Toefl-Ibt 2006 Test Format?, Alla Zareva

English Faculty Publications

In recent years TOEFL has become one of the most popular high-stakes tests affecting not only what and how English language teachers teach but also what and how students learn (e.g. Johnson, Jordan, & Poehner, 2005; Alderson & Wall, 1993). The new 2006 TOEFL–iBT exam is on its way; yet, until now, information about the new test format and test preparation materials is scarce. Above and beyond interest in the test alone, the burning question is what demanded the revision of the current test, given that the latest computer-based TOEFL was introduced fairly recently worldwide. The paper elaborates on some …

Fraction Models That Promote Understanding For Elementary Students, Lynette Hull

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the use of the set, area, and linear models of fraction representation to enhance elementary students' conceptual understanding of fractions. Students' preferences regarding the set, area, and linear models of fractions during independent work was also investigated. This study took place in a 5th grade class consisting of 21 students in a suburban public elementary school. Students participated in classroom activities which required them to use manipulatives to represent fractions using the set, area, and linear models. Students also had experiences using the models to investigate equivalent fractions, compare fractions, and perform operations. Students maintained journals throughout …

Internal Capital Markets And Bank Relationship - Evidence From Japanese Corporate Spin-Offs.Internal Capital Markets, Investment, Seung Han Jan 2005

Internal Capital Markets And Bank Relationship - Evidence From Japanese Corporate Spin-Offs.Internal Capital Markets, Investment, Seung Han

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two studies related to internal capital markets and bank relationship using Japanese corporate spin-offs. The first study analyzes the relation between internal capital markets and banks by examining 137 Japanese corporate spin-offs created between the years 2001 and 2003 (since the establishment of new spin-offs law in 2001). In a univariate analysis, we find significant positive average cumulative abnormal returns around the announcements, market-adjusted excess returns after the spin-offs, an increase of the Herfindahl index, and a reduction in the diversification discount after the spin-offs. In a cross-sectional analysis, we find that bank-related governance variables such …

A Consumer-Based Assessment Of Alliance Performance: An Examination Of Consumer Value, Satisfaction And Post-Purchase Behavior, Nacef Mouri Jan 2005

A Consumer-Based Assessment Of Alliance Performance: An Examination Of Consumer Value, Satisfaction And Post-Purchase Behavior, Nacef Mouri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Strategic alliances have become a recognized strategy used by firms in the pursuit of their diverse organizational objectives. Consequently, the literature on alliances is replete with research investigating the value strategic alliances generate for participating organizations. Strategic alliances have been shown to contribute to firm value through numerous sources, including scale economies, effective risk management, cost efficient market entries, and learning from partners. Largely overlooked in the literature however, are issues investigating the relationship between strategic alliances and one of the organization's most important constituents, the consumer. Questions such as how the consumer reacts to inter-firm alliances, how strategic alliances …

Market Foresight Capability: Determinants And New Product Outcomes, Michael Mccardle Jan 2005

Market Foresight Capability: Determinants And New Product Outcomes, Michael Mccardle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

To achieve and maintain a superior competitive position, firms must develop market sensing capability-the ability to sense events and trends in markets ahead of competitors (Day 1994a). According to Day, in firms with superior market sensing capability, "the processes for gathering, interpreting, and using market information are more systematic, thoughtful, and anticipatory than in other firms" [emphasis added]. Although Day asserted that market orientation captures the essence of a market sensing capability, researchers have suggested that market orientation, by itself, does not provide the requisite ability to develop competitive advantage because of its focus on detecting rather than anticipating market …

Commmonplaces On Preaching Among Commonplaces For Preaching? The Topic Predicacio In Thomas Of Ireland's Manipulus Florum, Chris L. Nighman

History Faculty Publications

This article offers a new theory regarding Thomas of Ireland's intention in compiling the Manipulus florum. Focusing on several passages from Thomas's Preface to this influential florilegium, the author proposes that it was not intended as a resource for sermon composition, as previously thought, but rather as a collection of authoritative quotations to be used by university students for the purpose of self-formation. While the evidence for its reception as a preaching aid indicates the importance of the entire text of the Manipulus for scholars of late medieval and early modem sermons, it is argued that thefifty-ftve quotations …

Is The Monopoly Theory Of Trademarks Robust Or A Bust?, Harold R. Weinberg Jan 2005

Is The Monopoly Theory Of Trademarks Robust Or A Bust?, Harold R. Weinberg

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

The "monopoly theory of trademarks" would "antitrustize" trademark law by incorporating antitrust legal precedent, economics, policies, reasoning, and terminology. The theory is comprised of six interrelated postulates contained in trademark law and scholarship. The postulates are (1) trademarks are monopolies; (2) trademark monopolies are like illegal antitrust monopolies because both harm competition; (3) trademark law is like antitrust law because both value competition; (4) trademark law is like antitrust law because both apply economic methodology to product markets; (5) an antitrust lens can help one understand trademarks and trademark law; and (6) an antitrust lens can help one decide whether …

Child Marriage Briefing: Mozambique, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This brief provides an overview of child marriage as well as the particulars of child marriage in Mozambique. Mozambique, in southeastern Africa, is home to 17.5 million people, with 45 percent of its population under age 15. More than three-quarters of Mozambicans live on less than US$2 a day. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has had a devastating effect on the country; approximately 1.3 million adults and children are living with HIV, and 470,000 children have been orphaned because of AIDS. Life expectancy has fallen to 34 years, among the lowest levels in the world. Mozambique has one of the most severe …

Child Marriage Briefing: Nigeria, Population Council

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

This brief provides an overview of child marriage as well as the particulars of child marriage in Nigeria, one of the poorest countries in the world. More than two out of three Nigerians live on less than US$1 a day, and life expectancy is 52 years. The HIV/AIDS epidemic has had a devastating effect on the country, and Nigeria has some of the highest rates of early marriage worldwide. The Child Rights Act, passed in 2003, raised the minimum age of marriage to 18 for girls. However, federal law may be implemented differently at the state level, and to date …

Adam Smith And Greed, Jonathan B. Wight Jan 2005

Adam Smith And Greed, Jonathan B. Wight

Economics Faculty Publications

The virtues of greed have been widely promoted by some economists in the 20th century. Allegedly it is Adam Smith who provides this new dignity to greed (Lerner, 1937, ix). Kenneth Arrow and Frank Hahn in the General Equilibrium Analysis (1971), for example, implicitly assume that Adam Smith's self-interest is the greed that promotes economic efficiency (quoted in Evensky, 1993, 203). Walter Williams (1999), a devoted follower of Smith, writes in his column that, "Free markets, private property rights, voluntary exchange, and greed produce preferable outcomes most times and under most conditions." These pronouncements have become part of the cultural …

Short Fiction By Women In The Victorian Literature Survey, Elisabeth Rose Gruner Jan 2005

Short Fiction By Women In The Victorian Literature Survey, Elisabeth Rose Gruner

English Faculty Publications

The first time I taught a Victorian Literature survey, fresh out of a curriculum integration workshop in graduate school, I taught ten authors: five male and five female. One student evaluation after the course was over complained that despite the promise of “great” Victorian writers, half of those on the syllabus were women. While this did take place in the dark ages of the early nineties, I still find myself, as I design my syllabi, caught in the familiar conundrum as to what to teach, what to cut, and why. In my case, it seems simple: The Victorian period is …
