Your Humble Servant Shows Himself: Don Saltero And Public Coffeehouse Space, Angela Todd Jun 2005

Your Humble Servant Shows Himself: Don Saltero And Public Coffeehouse Space, Angela Todd

Journal of International Women's Studies

In 1695, James Salter, who fashioned himself as “Don Saltero,” opened a coffeehouse on a respectable corner in Chelsea. The chief attraction of the coffeehouse, from Salter’s point of view, was the array of natural science detritus and colonial souvenirs displayed on the walls and ceiling. For the price of a cup of coffee, patrons could view the immensity of England’s global grasp, and ponder the bizarre workings of far-away lands and the earth’s creatures. What is noteworthy about Salter’s collection, however, is not the oddities on display—and there were many—but that his collection overlapped considerably with that of the …

The Affective Sustainability Of Objects; A Search For Causal Connections., Kristina Börjesson May 2005

The Affective Sustainability Of Objects; A Search For Causal Connections., Kristina Börjesson

Nordes Conference Series

This trans-disciplinary research project aims to answer 2 vital questions concerning the ‘timeless’ object: 1. Can designers’ way of thinking be enlarged and deepened to include the knowledge how to make an object retain its significance over time in a changing human context? 2. Will designers’ way of thinking thus further developed contribute in a substantial way to an improved and more holistic view on sustainability? ‘Affective sustainability’ doesn’t belong to established terminology and didn’t exist when these research questions were formulated. It has grown out of ongoing research but its relevance is still explored. The compressed results of the …

Webgenres And -Styles As Socio-Cultural Indicators - An Experimental, Interdisciplinary Dialogue, Ida Engholm, Karen Lisa Salamon May 2005

Webgenres And -Styles As Socio-Cultural Indicators - An Experimental, Interdisciplinary Dialogue, Ida Engholm, Karen Lisa Salamon

Nordes Conference Series

The article presents a crossdisciplinary experiment of analysing web-design through a combination of the academic fields of design history and anthropology. The two authors merge aesthetic and socio-cultural aspects of new technology in a case-based discussion of the invention and use of contemporary web design. Indicating the potentials of an inter-disciplinary perspective in exploring design in general they draw on such parameters as user-differentiation and aesthetic positioning in a discussion of the role of genre and style in commercial formations on the web. Comparing examples from banking web-pages, they discuss certain aspects of cultural and esthetical conceptual representational systems that …

Six Decades – And Six Different Roles For The Industrial Designer., Anna Valtonen May 2005

Six Decades – And Six Different Roles For The Industrial Designer., Anna Valtonen

Nordes Conference Series

In Finland the role of the industrial designer has changed with time. When the professional practice of industrial design first started to form, the designer was a creator whose work was likened to that of the artist. In the sixties designers started to work in closer co- operation with the industry, and the designer became a member of a team together with the engineer and the marketing representatives. In the seventies ergonomics were largely discussed and in the eighties the issue of Design Management became popular. In the nineties brand building and strategic design became the focus areas, and in …

Researching The Visual Qualities Of Exhibition Design Through Experimental And Cross-, Outi Turpeinen May 2005

Researching The Visual Qualities Of Exhibition Design Through Experimental And Cross-, Outi Turpeinen

Nordes Conference Series

This article is based on my ongoing PhD research, particularly on the questions of practice-based research combined with theoretical analysis. In this article, I will try to briefly clarify and give some examples of the use of experimental and cross- disciplinary methods in design research. I will start by analysing the relationships between museum objects and cultural history museums based on the assumption that the practices used for representation create meanings. I am particularly interested in how meanings are built into such visual elements of exhibition design as light, colour and materials. The process of meaning creation is semiotic in …

Domestication And Context: Studying Objectification In Print Media, Sara Routarinne May 2005

Domestication And Context: Studying Objectification In Print Media, Sara Routarinne

Nordes Conference Series

This article investigates into the domestication of communication technology through two cultural discourses, for one that of interior magazines and for two that of technology magazines. During domestication process technological items are objectified by ways in which they are brought to a physical environment and in ways in which they rearrange that environment (cf. Silverstone & al. 1992). The study is inspired by the domestication approach (Silverstone & Hirsch 1992, Silverstone 1994), while its methodological background is mainly based on critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 1995). The data consist of 55 magazine articles including 687 images. The findings indicate that the …

Products And Practices. Selected Concepts From Science And Technology Studies And From Social Theories Of Consumption And Practice, Elizabeth Shove, Matt Watson, Jack Ingram

Nordes Conference Series

Design researchers and practitioners are increasingly interested in how designed artefacts shape and are shaped by the contexts in which they are used. Despite a long if selective history of theoretical engagement between design and social science, there has yet to be an effective exchange of ideas on this subject in particular. In this article, we present a selection of concepts drawn from recent debates in science and technology studies and consumption theory. We introduce notions of acquisition; scripting; appropriation; assembly; normalisation and practice with the aim of initiating an inter- disciplinary conversation about how designed artefacts are configured and …

The Salient Features Of The Clock – A Functional Semiotic Design Analysis Of Relevance To Digital Design, Toke Riis Ebbesen May 2005

The Salient Features Of The Clock – A Functional Semiotic Design Analysis Of Relevance To Digital Design, Toke Riis Ebbesen

Nordes Conference Series

What is the basis for talking about digital design products? How can designers be more concise in their discourse on design. This article argues for the use of semiotics in practical design processes as well as within historical and interpretive research approaches. For this purpose the position of functional semiotics is explained in short terms and then further demonstrated in the analysis of a basic mechanical alarm clock. On this ground, the digital watch and digital design products in general are characterised and three possible avenues for the interpretation of the interactive possibilities of design products are discussed. Finally some …

High School Principals' Values And Their Symbolic And Cultural Leadership Approaches To Character Education In China, T.C. Kao Edd May 2005

High School Principals' Values And Their Symbolic And Cultural Leadership Approaches To Character Education In China, T.C. Kao Edd

Dissertations

Relatively little is known about the symbolic and cultural leadership practices and approaches used to imbed character education in high schools in China. In addition, there is a lack of published studies and reports investigating the revival between character and moral education in the Chinese school system. Without additional information, it is impossible to understand and develop effective leadership approaches that will shape and mold school cultures to effectively support both character and moral education. The literature reviewed in this study revealed little information about if, and in what form, there is a return to moral education focusing on traditional …

Cisplatin Carbonato Complexes. Implications For Uptake, Antitumor Properties, And Toxicity, Corey R. Centerwall, Jerry Goodisman, Deborah J. Kerwood, James C. Dabrowiak

Chemistry - All Scholarship

The reaction of aquated cisplatin with carbonate which is present in culture media and blood is described. The first formed complex is a monochloro monocarbonato species, which upon continued exposure to carbonate slowly forms a biscarbonato complex. The formation of carbonato species under conditions that simulate therapy may have important implications for uptake, antitumor properties, and toxicity of cisplatin.

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag May 2005

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag

Publications

Apart from the discussion about computer-mediated change in community and domestic political affairs, there is a pending debate on general effects of internet- or “net”-based communication on international politics. The reference to international politics rather than international relations is a consciously chosen one – for this paper focuses on net effects on collective decision-making rather than international-society processes. IP/IR driven research on internet-induced political change does not very much link itself to the state of knowledge in internet-and-politics research. Rather, it commonly departs from sub-discipline specific concepts such as neorealist power analysis or post-international turbulence analysis (cf. Allison 2002).

The Wrongful Rejection Of Big Theory (Marxism) By Feminism And Queer Theory: A Brief Debate, Dana Neacsu May 2005

The Wrongful Rejection Of Big Theory (Marxism) By Feminism And Queer Theory: A Brief Debate, Dana Neacsu

ExpressO

Post modern thought has fought meta-narrative into derision. "[I]f you lick my nipple," as Michael Warner remarked, "the world suddenly seems insignificant," and of course, identity becomes more than a cultural trait. It becomes "the performance of desire." It becomes a place of "ideological contestation over need," or, in other words, an ideology that demands "legitimacy for its desire." However, meta-narratives talk about desire too. For example, Marx talked about the desire caused by the never-ending production of commodities. Thus, if, at first sight, it may seem that identity politics and Marxism have very little in common, that may not …

A Study Of The Southern Appalachian Granny-Woman Related To Childbirth Prevention Measures., Harriet P. Masters May 2005

A Study Of The Southern Appalachian Granny-Woman Related To Childbirth Prevention Measures., Harriet P. Masters

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Documented as serving in the midwife capacity from the 1880s to the 1930s, the “granny-woman,” often was the only line of defense regarding childbirth support practices for many childbearing age women living in the region during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The early twentieth century saw the granny-women discredited and subject to elimination as a result of a purposeful campaign conducted by the male-dominated medical profession. Using knowledge of herbal remedies, the granny-woman played an integral part in the survival of the inhabitants of the region, especially related to childbirth. These centuries-old, herbal-based ministrations have been explored to …

The Last Day On Earth: Encoding And Decoding Of Resistant Ideology In Music Video, Desiree Damon May 2005

The Last Day On Earth: Encoding And Decoding Of Resistant Ideology In Music Video, Desiree Damon

Communication Honors Theses

According to Stuart Hall's theory of encoding and decoding, an audience member, based on their individual ideological perspectives, can read media texts in one of three ways: dominant, negotiated, or resistant. Hall's theory, however, also implies that the producer will always encode a dominant or hegemonic message. Given semantically messy texts like music videos, however, producers now have the freedom to either encode a dominant ideology or to resist it. In order for the audience to make sense of a resistant ideology, it must first be relevant to them. Their subject position, which includes personal experiences, as well as familiarity …

Is Classical Christian Education Compatible With A Reformed Christian Perspective On Education?, Peter L. Ton May 2005

Is Classical Christian Education Compatible With A Reformed Christian Perspective On Education?, Peter L. Ton

Master of Education Program Theses

Is the growing classical Christian education movement, based on Dorothy Sayers’ trivium methodology, compatible to a Reformed Christian perspective on education? The classical Christian position claims that children progress through three stages of development and that the three components of the trivium complement these natural learning stages. The first stage involves memorizing facts through chants, stories and songs. In the second stage students learn how to argue and analyze by means of formal training in logic. The third stage focuses on learning to express knowledge persuasively and elegantly. When compared to the Reformed understanding of covenant children as well as …

Deconstructing The “War Of All Against All”: The Prevalence And Implications Of War Metaphors And Other Adversarial News Schema In Time, Newsweek, And Maclean’S, Michael Karlberg, Leslie Buell

Peace and Conflict Studies

This study examines and critiques the discursive construction of a Hobbesian “war of all against all” in North American commercial news magazines. The prevalence of war metaphors and related adversarial news schemas is documented over a twenty year period, from 1981 to 2000, through an analysis of TIME and Newsweek, along with their Canadian counterpart Maclean’s. After documenting the pervasiveness of these discursive constructs, the paper discusses the underlying causes and potential consequences of these patterns in commercial news discourse. The paper concludes by asserting that this discursively constructed “war of all against all” is highly problematic and unsustainable in …
