An Analysis Of An Experimental Study Measuring The Effectiveness Of Using Creative Problem Solving In The Living Environment Curriculum, Steven C. Kolbert

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The main focus of this experimental study was to identify how I used the aspects of Creative Problem Solving (CPS) in the Living Environment classroom and to compare its effectiveness to how I previously taught the course using traditional teaching methodologies. The research conducted included: 1) A qualitative analysis comparing the performance of students taking the Living Environment course during the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 academic school years when I used traditional teaching methods to the 2004-2005 academic school year when I used CPS to teach the same curriculum; 2) A quantitative analysis of teacher feedback identifying the effectiveness of implementing …

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch Dec 2005

Joseph Smith And The Past, John W. Welch

BYU Studies

My thoughts on Joseph Smith’s interest in past worlds cluster into three sections. The first deals with the challenge of evaluating and assessing Joseph Smith’s recoveries of texts or views from past worlds or civilizations. The second develops a list of ways in which the past functioned in Joseph Smith’s process of continuing revelation. The third focuses on the dynamic link between the past and the present in Joseph Smith’s concept of priesthood authority and its restoration.

Internet Usage And Information Seeking Behaviour Of Students Conducting History Projects: Determining The Need Of A Digital Library For Historical Resources, Abdullah Abrizah, Awang Ngah Zainab

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

This paper reports the results of a user study done at the formative stage of development of a collaborative resource development (CoreDev) digital library for Malaysian historical resources by collaborating partners. CoreDev aims to provide an electronic system to help students obtain information on local history; collect, store and organize information in digital format; publish and share electronic resources. While most digital library projects were driven, by technology development and research, there has been little investigation into how to develop a creative, working community around a digital library. This paper presents preliminary findings on students' readiness and receptivity to participate …

How Does The Sound Pressure Generated By Circumaural, Supra-Aural, And Insert Earphones Differ For Adult And Infant Ears?, Susan E. Voss, Barbara S. Herrmann Dec 2005

How Does The Sound Pressure Generated By Circumaural, Supra-Aural, And Insert Earphones Differ For Adult And Infant Ears?, Susan E. Voss, Barbara S. Herrmann

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Objective:

To determine how the ear canal sound pressure levels generated by circumaural, supra-aural, and insert earphones differ when coupled to the normal adult and infant ear.

Design:

The ratio between the sound pressure generated in an adult ear and an infant ear was calculated for three types of earphones: a circumaural earphone (Natus Medical, ALGO with Flexicoupler™), a supra-aural earphone (Telephonics, TDH-49 with MXAR cushion), and an insert earphone placed in the ear canal (Etymo↕tic Research, ER-3A). The calculations are based on (1) previously published measurements of ear canal impedances in adult and infant (ages 1, 3, 6, 12, …

Teaching Reading: Literature Review: A Review Of The Evidence-Based Research Literature On Approaches To The Teaching Of Literacy, Particularly Those That Are Effective In Assisting Students With Reading Difficulties, Ken Rowe, National Inquiry Into The Teaching Of Literacy (Australia) Dec 2005

Teaching Reading: Literature Review: A Review Of The Evidence-Based Research Literature On Approaches To The Teaching Of Literacy, Particularly Those That Are Effective In Assisting Students With Reading Difficulties, Ken Rowe, National Inquiry Into The Teaching Of Literacy (Australia)

School and system improvement

Underlying a key purpose of the present review is the conviction that claims about what constitute effective literacy teaching, and of reading in particular, should be grounded in findings from rigorous evidence-based research. To this end, the present review of the research literature on teaching practices for students, with and without reading difficulties, relies largely, though not exclusively, on well-designed meta analytic syntheses that: (a) partial out methodological artefacts from the effect sizes; and (b) base their analyses on the actual procedures and components of instruction used in the studies reviewed. Following a brief outline of the background and purposes …

Le Français D’Origine Maghrébine Face Au Prisme Médiatique, Hassiba Lassoued

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

Whether we admit it or not, the mass media manipulates the masses. This fact proves to be especially dangerous in the context of French people of Maghrebian origin. The media presents them as either incapable of being “assimilated” or as models of integration. At any rate, there seems to be no middle ground between these two extremes.

By now most of us have been using Classification Web for some time, but if you are like me you could use some reminders about its features and capabilities. First, if you have not already done so you should sign up for at least the Class Web Announcement electronic list which is a low traffic list used to keep you informed about the site, and probably also for the Users Group discussion list which allows you to communicate with fellow users. Information on these lists and how to sign up for them can be found by clicking on the link …

A Study Of Attrition In A Respiratory Care Associate Degree Program In A Northeast Tennessee Community College., Donna D. Lilly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Walters State Community College's Respiratory Care (WSCC RC) Program had a 33% attrition rate during a five-year period from 1999 through 2003. This study analyzed demographic, pre-admission, and academic variables to identify reasons for attrition within the WSCC RC program. The population size was 90 students; this was the entire population of five consecutive classes graduating during a five-year period from 1999 through 2003. The criterion variables included high school attended, gender, age, college-level GPA, college-level credit hours, and developmental requirements.

Statistical tests revealed that college-level GPA, college-level credit hours, and developmental requirements influenced persistence within the population. The …

Joseph Smith In A Personal World, Dallin H. Oaks Dec 2005

Joseph Smith In A Personal World, Dallin H. Oaks

BYU Studies

My subject is Joseph Smith in a personal world. My lens is primarily a personal one—his impact on me and believers I have known during my lifetime. I will also discuss Joseph Smith’s own personal world and his impact on his acquaintances and friends. A major focus will be Joseph Smith’s role as a prophet and his teachings on the reality of revelation. By prophet I mean one who speaks for God in revealing divine truth to others. By revelation I mean God’s communication to man—to prophets and to every one of us, if we seek.

Wireless Protected Access, Abhishek Neelakanata Dec 2005

Wireless Protected Access, Abhishek Neelakanata

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

The researcher identified security issues in the wireless network, and discussed methods and the importance of a securing wireless network. Wireless network encryption in use today were examined for their vulnerabilities and the researcher determined that most of the wireless security features in use today do not provide adequate security measure. The researcher recommended that home or Small Office/ Home Office (SOHO) environment users to make the best of what is available for securing wireless networks i.e. upgrade to WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2), or use WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) with truly random value with minimum 20 characters of PSK …

Travel Assistant Device (Tad) To Help Transit Riders, Philip L. Winters, Sean Barbeau, Nevine Georggi, Rafael Perez, Miguel Labrador

CUTR Research Reports

This proposed application, Travel Assistance Device (TAD), would use multimedia cell phones with built-in global positioning systems to help new transit riders, especially those who are cognitively disabled. Informational prompts will be delivered to the rider in a "just-in-time" method such as triggering the phone to ring, vibrate or deliver an audio message when the rider should pull the stop cord. Automated alarms can be triggered and the travel trainer and/or parent/guardian remotely alerted in case a rider wanders off their pre-determined path. Traditional phone communication is possible between the rider and the trainer which will allow them to guide …

Diversity And Structure Of Bacterial Chemolithotrophic Communities In Pine Forest And Agroecosystem Soils, J. Tolli, G. M. King Dec 2005

Diversity And Structure Of Bacterial Chemolithotrophic Communities In Pine Forest And Agroecosystem Soils, J. Tolli, G. M. King

Faculty Publications

Obligate lithotrophs (e.g., ammonia oxidizers) and facultative lithotrophs (e.g., CO and hydrogen oxidizers) collectively comprise a phylogenetically diverse functional group that contributes significantly to carbon and nitrogen cycles in soils and plays important roles in trace gas dynamics (e.g., carbon monoxide and nitrous and nitric oxides) that affect tropospheric chemistry and radiative forcing. In spite of their diverse physiologies, facultative and obligate lithotrophs typically possess the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle enzyme, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisCO). In an effort designed to understand the structure of lithotrophic communities in soil, genomic DNA extracts from surface (0 to 2 cm) and subsurface (5 to 7 cm) …

Sequential Equilibria In Bayesian Games With Communication, Dino Gerardi, Roger B. Myerson Dec 2005

Sequential Equilibria In Bayesian Games With Communication, Dino Gerardi, Roger B. Myerson

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We study the effects of communication in Bayesian games when the players are sequentially rational but some combinations of types have zero probability. Not all communication equilibria can be implemented as sequential equilibria. We define the set of strong sequential equilibria (SSCE) and characterize it. SSCE differs from the concept of sequential communication equilibrium (SCE) defined by Myerson (1986) in that SCE allows the possibility of trembles by the mediator. We show that these two concepts coincide when there are three or more players, but the set of SSCE may be strictly smaller than the set of SCE for two-player …
