Compelling Interest, Forbidden Aim: The Antinomy Of Grutter And Gratz, Patrick S. Shin Dec 2005

Compelling Interest, Forbidden Aim: The Antinomy Of Grutter And Gratz, Patrick S. Shin

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

This article explores the tension between the Grutter Court's capacious account of the value of racial diversity, on the one hand, and the Gratz Court's insistence on the constraining mechanism of individualized consideration, on the other. The article examines whether the promotion of diversity as a compelling interest can be reconciled with the requirement of individualized consideration under any coherent principle of equal treatment. The article concludes that the only way this can be done is to interpret the cases as rejecting the proposition that 'racial' diversity represents a compelling governmental interest and as implicitly adopting, instead, the idea that …

Ultracold Neutral Plasma Expansion In Two Dimensions, E. A. Cummings, J. E. Daily, Dallin S. Durfee, Scott D. Bergeson Dec 2005

Ultracold Neutral Plasma Expansion In Two Dimensions, E. A. Cummings, J. E. Daily, Dallin S. Durfee, Scott D. Bergeson

Faculty Publications

An isothermal model of ultracold neutral plasma expansion is extended to systems without spherical symmetry. It is used to interpret new fluorescence measurements on ultracold neutral calcium plasmas. For a self-similar expansion, the fluid equations are solved both analytically and numerically. The density and velocity solutions are used to predict fluorescence signals induced by a laser beam weakly focused into the plasma. Despite the simplicity of the model, predicted fluorescence signals reproduce major features of the experimental data

Some Preliminary Statistical, Qualitative, And Anecdotal Findings Of An Empirical Study Of Collegiality Among Law Professors, Michael L. Seigel

ExpressO

This article is an empirically-based follow-up to a piece I published last year in the Journal of Legal Education entitled, On Collegiality, 54 J. Legal Educ. 406 (2004). It provides insight into the process of conducting empirical research and sets forth some preliminary – yet very intriguing – data and qualitative information gleaned from a survey responded to by more than 1200 law professors nationwide. The survey addressed a wide range of topics related to collegiality and job satisfaction in the legal-academic profession.

Parallel Compositing Of Multi-Temporal Satellite Imagery Using Temporal Map Algebra, Bijay Shrestha Dec 2005

Parallel Compositing Of Multi-Temporal Satellite Imagery Using Temporal Map Algebra, Bijay Shrestha

Theses and Dissertations

Spatio-temporal satellite image analysis is a technique for monitoring spatial and temporal changes of land cover and oceanic locations on earth. Temporal Map Algebra (TMA) is a novel technique developed by Jeremy Mennis and Roland Viger for analyzing a time series of satellite imagery using simple algebraic operators that treats time series of imagery as a threedimensional data set, where two dimensions encode planimetric position on earth surface and the third dimension encodes time. The high dimensionality of raster data leads to high computational cost, which is why parallel computation is attractive. This thesis describes the design, implementation, andmperformance evaluation …

An Approach To Graph-Based Modeling Of Network Exploitations, Wei Li Dec 2005

An Approach To Graph-Based Modeling Of Network Exploitations, Wei Li

Theses and Dissertations

Computer security professionals and researchers are investigating proactive techniques for studying network-based attack behavior. Attack modeling is one of these research areas. In this dissertation, we address a novel attack modeling technique called an exploitation graph (e-graph) for representing attack scenarios. The key assumption in this research is that we can use exploitation graphs to represent attack scenarios, and methods involving e-graphs can be applied to provide vulnerability mitigation strategies. The modeling process consists of three primary steps. The first step is the creation of a knowledge base of vulnerability graphs (v-graphs) from known system vulnerabilities. Each v-graph shows necessary …

Critical Properties Of Small World Ising Models, Xingjun Zhang Dec 2005

Critical Properties Of Small World Ising Models, Xingjun Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, the critical scaling behavior of magnetic Ising models with long range interactions is studied. These long range interactions, when imposed in addition to interactions on a regular lattice, lead to small-world graphs. By using large-scale Monte Carlo simulations, together with finite-size scaling, the critical behavior of a number of different models is obtained. The Ising models studied in this dissertation include the z-model introduced by Scalettar, standard small-world bonds superimposed on a square lattice, and physical small-world bonds superimposed on a square lattice. From the scaling results of the Binder 4th order cumulant, the order parameter, and …

Automatic Cad Model Processing For Downstream Applications, Paresh S. Patel Dec 2005

Automatic Cad Model Processing For Downstream Applications, Paresh S. Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Computer Aided Design (CAD) models often need to be processed due to data translation issues and requirements of the downstream applications like computational field simulation, rapid rototyping, computer graphics, computational manufacturing, and real-time rendering before they can be used. Automatic CAD model processing tools can significantly reduce the amount of time and cost associated with the manual processing. In this dissertaion, automated topology generation and feature removal techniques are developed to prepare suitable models with mimunum user interaction. A topology generation algorithm, commonly known as CAD repairing/healing, is presented to detect commonly found geometrical and topological issues like cracks, gaps, overlaps, intersections, …

Identification And Location Of Sunken Logs Using Sidescan Sonar Technology, Aravindh Srivatsav Ravichandran Dec 2005

Identification And Location Of Sunken Logs Using Sidescan Sonar Technology, Aravindh Srivatsav Ravichandran

Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the location of sunken logs is a task of considerable interest in today?s world economy. The main motive of this work is to find and locate sunken cypress logs that were lost during the transit to a lumber mills. Underwater logging is possible because of the fact that many of the logs were barely affected by the decades of submersion. Cypress logs, the types of logs used in this research have a natural resistant to rotting. The other probability for the logs not being affected significantly, even staying in water for decades, is the high density of the growth …

Development Of An Improved On-Line Voltage Stability Index Using Synchronized Phasor Measurement, Yanfeng Gong Dec 2005

Development Of An Improved On-Line Voltage Stability Index Using Synchronized Phasor Measurement, Yanfeng Gong

Theses and Dissertations

Recent events, such as the Northeast Blackout of 2003, have highlighted the need for accurate real-time stability assessment techniques to detect when an electric power system is on the brink of voltage collapse. While many techniques exist, most techniques are computationally demanding and cannot be used in an on-line application. A voltage stability index (VSI) can be designed to estimate the distance of the current operating point to the voltage marginally stable point during the system operation. In this research work, a new VSI was developed that not only can detect the system voltage marginally stable point but also is …

Design Optimization Of A Parallel Hybrid Powertrain Using Derivative-Free Algorithms, Sachin Kumar Porandla Dec 2005

Design Optimization Of A Parallel Hybrid Powertrain Using Derivative-Free Algorithms, Sachin Kumar Porandla

Theses and Dissertations

A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) is a complex electro-mechanical-chemical system that involves two or more energy sources. The inherent advantages of HEVs are their increased fuel economy, reduced harmful emissions and better vehicle performance. The extent of improvement in fuel economy and vehicle performance greatly depends on selecting optimal component sizes. The complex interaction between the various components makes it difficult to size specific components manually or analytically. So, simulation-based multi-variable design optimization is a possible solution for such kind of system level design problems. The multi-modal, noisy and discontinuous nature of the Hybrid Vehicle design requires the use of …

Combining Static Analysis And Dynamic Learning To Build Context Sensitive Models Of Program Behavior, Zhen Liu Dec 2005

Combining Static Analysis And Dynamic Learning To Build Context Sensitive Models Of Program Behavior, Zhen Liu

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation describes a family of models of program behavior, the Hybrid Push Down Automata (HPDA) that can be acquired using a combination of static analysis and dynamic learning in order to take advantage of the strengths of both. Static analysis is used to acquire a base model of all behavior defined in the binary source code. Dynamic learning from audit data is used to supplement the base model to provide a model that exactly follows the definition in the executable but that includes legal behavior determined at runtime. Our model is similar to the VPStatic model proposed by Feng, …

Development Of A Supersonic Wind Tunnel Rapid Real-Time Data Acquisition And Control System, Ndubuisi Emmanuel Okoro Dec 2005

Development Of A Supersonic Wind Tunnel Rapid Real-Time Data Acquisition And Control System, Ndubuisi Emmanuel Okoro

Theses and Dissertations

As a part of the revitalization of the supersonic wind tunnel maintained by the Aerospace Engineering Department of Mississippi State University, a new data acquisition and control system became incumbent. Previous data acquisition and control systems used in the operation of the supersonic wind tunnel made use of now outdated hardware and functioned with two central processing units; one processor was used for recording system response, while the other monitored and controlled the tunnel. A new system is required to provide adequate rapid real-time control, along with rapid acquisition of raw tunnel feedback or response data and tunnel pressure data …

Transport Rate-Based Model For Overland Flow And Solute Transport: Parameter Estimation And Process Simulation, Zhi Qiang Deng, João L.M.P. De Lima, Vijay P. Singh

Faculty Publications

A one-dimensional mathematical model, termed a transport rate-based model, is developed for solute transport over infiltrating soil slopes under constant rainfall and declining sources. The model is comprised of (1) the kinematic-wave equation for overland flow, (2) a transport rate-based advection equation for overland solute transport, (3) a moment-based method for estimation of the parameters involved in the flow and solute transport equations, and (4) a semi-Lagrangian algorithm for numerical solution of the solute transport equation. Data from a single soil flume experiment under constant rainfall established the proof-of-concept for this new model. Sodium chloride was applied to the soil …

Adjoint-Based Error Estimation And Grid Adaptation For Functional Outputs From Cfd Simulations, Ravishankar Balasubramanian Dec 2005

Adjoint-Based Error Estimation And Grid Adaptation For Functional Outputs From Cfd Simulations, Ravishankar Balasubramanian

Theses and Dissertations

This study seeks to reduce the degree of uncertainty that often arises in computational fluid dynamics simulations about the computed accuracy of functional outputs. An error estimation methodology based on discrete adjoint sensitivity analysis is developed to provide a quantitative measure of the error in computed outputs. The developed procedure relates the local residual errors to the global error in output function via adjoint variables as weight functions. The three major steps in the error estimation methodology are: (1) development of adjoint sensitivity analysis capabilities; (2) development of an efficient error estimation procedure; (3) implementation of an output-based grid adaptive …

Finite Element Simulations Of Three-Dimensional Microstructurally Small Fatigue Crack Growth In 7075 Aluminum Alloy Using Crystal Plasticity Theory, Stephen R (Stephen Riley) Johnston Dec 2005

Finite Element Simulations Of Three-Dimensional Microstructurally Small Fatigue Crack Growth In 7075 Aluminum Alloy Using Crystal Plasticity Theory, Stephen R (Stephen Riley) Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses plasticity-induced crack closure based finite element simulations of small fatigue cracks in three dimensions utilizing crystal plasticity theory. Previously, modeling has been performed in two dimensions using a double-slip crystal plasticity material model. The goal of this work is to extend that research using a full three-dimensional FCC crystal plasticity material model implementation that accounts for all twelve FCC slip systems. Discussions of Python scripts that were written to perform analyses with the commercial finite element code ABAQUS are given. A detailed description of the modeling methodology is presented along with results for single crystals and bicrystals. …
