A Review Of Ten Years Assistance To The Mine Action Programme In Mozambique, Gichd Oct 2005

A Review Of Ten Years Assistance To The Mine Action Programme In Mozambique, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action has played a role in Mozambique's achievements over the past decade by opening infrastructure networks, reducing the toll of casualties from landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO), assisting landline survivors, and clearing hazards that posed a danger to lives and a constraint on development for many communities. As is true for most activities in Mozambique, observers with the benefit of hindsight can point to many ways in which mine action organisations and the programme overall could have done better. But in broad terms, the outcomes are positive. Casualties are down dramatically, and travel in the country is basically unimpeded …

Profile: Take Flight, University Relations

Profile (1996-)

I told our campus community that only time will tell if I was the right person at the right time for UMM, but that I know already that UMM was certainly the most right college for me, and I was incredibly lucky to land here. I have had the rare and wonderful honor to work with splendid a administrative team, to follow three exceptional predecessors, to know an outstanding faculty and a dedicated staff and, most of all, to encounter the best students any college in the world could attract. For all those gifts and many, many more, I am …

Men’S Conformity To Traditional Masculinity And Relationship Satisfaction, Shawn Meghan Burn, A. Zachary Ward Oct 2005

Men’S Conformity To Traditional Masculinity And Relationship Satisfaction, Shawn Meghan Burn, A. Zachary Ward

Psychology and Child Development

The Conformity to Masculine Norms Inventory (CMNI), intended as a counseling tool to examine masculinity issues with male clients, assesses conformity to 12 components of the masculine role. In this study, participants (N = 307) completed the CMNI and the Relationship Assessment Scale (RAS). Men’s conformity to traditional masculine norms was negatively associated with RAS scores for both men rating themselves and women rating their male partners on the CMNI. Men’s conformity to masculine norms was more strongly associated with women’s relationship satisfaction than with men’s relationship satisfaction. Findings suggest the usefulness of the CMNI for helping counseling clients explore …

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham Oct 2005

Great Anger, Anthony Cunningham

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Anger has had a major hand in a history of inhumanity. In this light, some schools of thought have suggested that we do best to jettison anger entirely. However, anger, like grief, is tied to caring deeply, and as such, both emotions can speak to what is best and most beautiful about human life and character.

Facilitating Public Participation In The Eastern Cape Province: A Case Study Of The Centre For Governance In Africa, Paul D. Lemaistre Oct 2005

Facilitating Public Participation In The Eastern Cape Province: A Case Study Of The Centre For Governance In Africa, Paul D. Lemaistre

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Decreasing amounts of public participation threaten to undermine the legitimacy of democracy in South Africa. Numerous surveys, academic resources and Internet and print media indicate general trends among the citizenry that a disconnection and dissatisfaction towards government is prevalent. As a result, the South African public has extremely low levels of public participation for a nation with such a politically charged past. It has become the objective of many civil society organizations to help with the delivery of vital developmental goals, including democracy advocacy, on behalf of the citizens. This paper seeks to examine the efforts of a single NGO, …

Combatant Status Review Tribunals And The Unique Nature Of The War On Terror, Robert A. Peal Oct 2005

Combatant Status Review Tribunals And The Unique Nature Of The War On Terror, Robert A. Peal

Vanderbilt Law Review

On September 11, 2001, terrorists attacked the United States, killing 2,973 innocent civilians. This was the largest loss of life on U.S. soil due to a hostile act in the nation's history. Al Qaeda, an international terrorist organization, claimed responsibility for the act. Al Qaeda had been systematically targeting U.S. civilians and service members for at least the previous nine years. In response to the attacks, the United States conducted a series of military and legal actions that were highly controversial and unprecedented. As part of these actions, the executive branch claimed the authority to detain indefinitely individuals it labeled …

Evolution Of Sexual Dimorphism And Male Dimorphism In The Expression Of Beetle Horns: Phylogenetic Evidence For Modularity, Evolutionary Lability, And Constraint, Douglas J. Emlen, John Hunt, Leigh W. Simmons Oct 2005

Evolution Of Sexual Dimorphism And Male Dimorphism In The Expression Of Beetle Horns: Phylogenetic Evidence For Modularity, Evolutionary Lability, And Constraint, Douglas J. Emlen, John Hunt, Leigh W. Simmons

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Beetle horns are enlarged outgrowths of the head or thorax that are used as weapons in contests over access to mates. Horn development is typically confined to males (sexual dimorphism) and often only to the largest males (male dimorphism). Both types of dimorphism result from endocrine threshold mechanisms that coordinate cell proliferation near the end of the larval period. Here, we map the presence/absence of each type of dimorphism onto a recent phylogeny for the genus Onthophagits (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) to explore how horn development has changed over time. Our results provide empirical support for several recent predictions regarding the evolutionary …

Characterization And Expression Analysis Of The Groesl Operon Of Bartonella Bacilliformis, Julie A. Callison, James M. Battisti, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Michael F. Minnick Oct 2005

Characterization And Expression Analysis Of The Groesl Operon Of Bartonella Bacilliformis, Julie A. Callison, James M. Battisti, Kate N. Sappington, Laura S. Smitherman, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The groESL operon of Bartonella bacilliformis, a facultative intracellular, Gram-negative bacterium and etiologic agent of Oroya Fever, was characterized. Sequence analysis revealed an operon containing two genes of 294 (groES) and 1632 nucleotides (groEL) separated by a 55-nt intergenic spacer. The operon is preceded by a 72-nt ORF (ORF1) that encodes a hypothetical protein with homology to a portion of the HrcA repressor for groESL. A divergent fumarate hydratase C (fumC) gene lies further upstream. Deduced amino acid sequences for B. bacilliformis GroEL and GroES revealed a high degree of identity with homologues from other Bartonella and alpha-Protebacteria. A single …

How Do Corporations Play Politics?: The Fedex Story, Jill E. Fisch Oct 2005

How Do Corporations Play Politics?: The Fedex Story, Jill E. Fisch

Vanderbilt Law Review

Corporate political activity has been the subject of federal regulation since 1907, and the restrictions on corporate campaign contributions and other political expenditures continue to increase. Most recently, Congress banned soft money donations in the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002 ("BCRA"), a ban upheld by the Supreme Court in McConnell v. FEC. Significantly, although the omnibus BCRA clearly was not directed exclusively at corporations, the Supreme Court began its lengthy opinion in McConnell by referencing and endorsing the efforts of Elihu Root, more than a century ago, to prohibit corporate political contributions. Repeatedly, within the broad context of campaign …
