Measuring The Accountability Of Advertising Expenses In The Presence Of Sales Cost Inefficiency And Marketing Spillovers, Konstantinos Giannakas, Giannis Karagiannis, Vangelis Tzouvelekas Oct 2005

Measuring The Accountability Of Advertising Expenses In The Presence Of Sales Cost Inefficiency And Marketing Spillovers, Konstantinos Giannakas, Giannis Karagiannis, Vangelis Tzouvelekas

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

This paper develops a tractable theoretical framework for analyzing the substitutability between different advertising media, the extent of marketing spillovers in the market, the allocative efficiency of advertising spending, and the sources of total advertising productivity and sales growth. Maintaining the separability assumption between sales and production technology, the proposed methodology relies on cost-function decomposition of total factor productivity and the duality between input distance and cost functions. Utilizing a flexible Translog advertising distance function, the methodology is applied to the advertising activity of meat processing firms in Greece during the period 1983-1997. Scale economies in advertising expenses turn out …

Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock Oct 2005

Do You Really Want To Be A Forum?, Leonard Hitchcock

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article examines what a public forum is, and whether or not a library can legitimately claim to be one. Beginning with an imaginary visit to a rather odd public park, and a brief review of the development of the legal doctrine of the public forum, an attempt is made to establish that the library 1) falls far short of being a genuine public forum, 2) is actually ambivalent about being a forum at all, and 3) could, if it really wanted to, become much more of a forum by making a very simple change in its online catalog.

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger Oct 2005

Information As A Value Concept, Thomas Weissinger

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. Consequently, this leads to theories of information which …

Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner Oct 2005

Empowering The Intentional Learner: A Critical Theory For Information Literacy Instruction, John J. Doherty, Kevin Ketchner

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The empowered intentional learner is a starting point towards a grounded theory in information literacy instruction. The authors engage this theory in a critical dialogue with instructional practice, in this instance a for-credit college freshman class built around information literacy concepts. Only through such reflection, where theory informs practice and practice informs theory, is it possible to develop a grounded theory where a less privileged role for the instruction librarian takes a back seat role to the control students should have over their own learning.

The Transnational Judicial Discourse And Felon Disenfranchisement: Re-Examining The Textual Premise Of Richardson V. Ramirez, Jason G. Morgan-Foster Oct 2005

The Transnational Judicial Discourse And Felon Disenfranchisement: Re-Examining The Textual Premise Of Richardson V. Ramirez, Jason G. Morgan-Foster

ExpressO

This article is simultaneously an international comparative law piece about prisoner disenfranchisement in various countries, a transnational work of legal theory providing a framework for the use of foreign law in domestic constitutional courts, and a domestic analysis of the constitutional underpinnings of felon disenfranchisement.

The article begins with a comprehensive comparative analysis of the recent prisoner disenfranchisement decisions in Canada, South Africa, and Europe. It notes that the over-arching theme of these decisions is to view the acceptability of prisoner disenfranchisement along a continuum, where it becomes more acceptable the more serious the offense committed.

The article then examines …

Grain Boundary Scars On Spherical Crystals, Mark Bowick, Thomas Einert, Peter Lipowsky, Jorg Schilling, Andreas R. Bausch Oct 2005

Grain Boundary Scars On Spherical Crystals, Mark Bowick, Thomas Einert, Peter Lipowsky, Jorg Schilling, Andreas R. Bausch

Physics - All Scholarship

We present an experimental system suitable for producing spherical crystals and for observing the distribution of lattice defects (disclinations and dislocations) on a significant fraction (50%) of the sphere. The introduction of fluorescently labeled particles enables us to determine the location and orientation of grain boundary scars. We find that the total number of scars and the number of excess dislocations per scar agree with theoretical predictions and that the geometrical centers of the scars are roughly positioned at the vertices of an icosahedron.

Do Imports Cause Economic Growth? A Time-Series Investigation Of The U.S. Data, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh Oct 2005

Do Imports Cause Economic Growth? A Time-Series Investigation Of The U.S. Data, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper investigates the relationship between imports and economic growth in the US in the long run and the short run. Quarterly data ranging from the first quarter of 1970 to the fourth quarter of 2000 are used to investigate this relationship. Cointegration tests using Johansen's (] 988) technique are used to analyze the long run relationship between imports and economic growth (measured by nominal GDP). Test results indicate that imports and economic growth are related in the long run. The short run analysis of the data is conducted within vector error correction (VEC) testing framework. VEC rest results indicate …

When Hercules Met The Happy Prince: Re-Imagining The Judge, Erika Rackley Oct 2005

When Hercules Met The Happy Prince: Re-Imagining The Judge, Erika Rackley

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Although often dismissed as a myth, the image of the judge as a Herculean superhero whose mission is to apply the law in a straightforward way retains a tenacious grip on our understandings of the judge and judging. The relationship between Oscar Wilde's Happy Prince and Hercules is one of uncomfortable similarity and difference. Like the Happy Prince, the Herculean judge who inhabits the legal imagination stands alone high upon Mount Olympus invisibly clothed with the appearance of neutrality and objectivity, our infatuation with this aesthetic image securing his position and role, his imposed beauty mirroring the golden facade of …

Stories That Make The Law Free: Literature As A Bridge Between The Law And The Culture In Which It Must Exist, Christine Metteer Lorillard Oct 2005

Stories That Make The Law Free: Literature As A Bridge Between The Law And The Culture In Which It Must Exist, Christine Metteer Lorillard

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In this paper, I will examine how literature, by telling stories and examining their meaning, allows us to make the law free, by seeing it in its cultural context. I take, as a specific example Barbara Kingsolver's novel, Pigs in Heaven, as it explores the cultural dialectic underlying application of the Indian Child Welfare Act.

Why Is There No Russian Atticus Finch? Or Even A Russian Rumpole?, Michael Newcity Oct 2005

Why Is There No Russian Atticus Finch? Or Even A Russian Rumpole?, Michael Newcity

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The purpose of this Article is to examine how the pre- and postreform nineteenth-century Russian legal institutions were reflected in literature of that time and to analyze why the literary theme that has been so common and strong in Anglophonic literature-the lawyer, judge, and jury as hero-never appeared in Russia.

Taking Ian Watt To Court, Or How Do Jurors Read Stories?, Marco Wan Oct 2005

Taking Ian Watt To Court, Or How Do Jurors Read Stories?, Marco Wan

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

In his seminal work, The Rise of the Novel, Ian Watt posits an analogy between the readers of a novel and the members of a jury. This comparison has formed the foundation for much subsequent work on law-and-literature. Alexander Welsh, for example, begins his analysis of Tom Jones with Watt's analogy, which he finds "fully warranted." Given its centrality in our field, it is necessary to examine Watt's claim more closely. In this paper, I will test his analogy between reader and juror by bringing it into dialogue with a mid-Victorian novel, William Thackeray's Vanity Fair. I will then argue against …
