Indulge me for a few moments, will you? I write this column just as we approach the Thanksgiving. You will read it having spent the last few weeks recovering from the Christmas Holidays. It seems appropriate at this time, even conventional, to spend a few moments looking at what we all have to be thankful for, even joyous about. All too often the quotidian cares of life weigh us down unceremoniously, and we forget that we have much to be thankful for.

Electromagnetism In Gravitational Collapse, Craig Ernest Skinfill Dec 2005

Electromagnetism In Gravitational Collapse, Craig Ernest Skinfill

Theses and Dissertations

A numerical approach to including electromagnetism with general relativity is developed using GRAXI as a starting point. We develop a mathematical model describing electromagnetism coupled to a scalar field in an evolving axisymmetric spacetime. As there are numerous formulations of electromagnetism, we evalute different formulations in a limited flat space case. The full curved space system is then developed, using the flat case as a guide to implementing electromagnetism. This model is then implemented using GRAXI as a code base.

An Adaptive Nonlinear Fuel Injection Control Algorithm For Motorcycle Engine, Tung-Chieh Chen, Chiu-Feng Lin, Chyuan-Yow Tseng, Chung-Ying Chen Dec 2005

An Adaptive Nonlinear Fuel Injection Control Algorithm For Motorcycle Engine, Tung-Chieh Chen, Chiu-Feng Lin, Chyuan-Yow Tseng, Chung-Ying Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The purpose of this research is to apply an adaptive fuel injection control algorithm on a motorcycle engine and evaluate its performance. A highly nonlinear switching type EGO sensor is used to measure the air fuel ratio of the engine. In the research, the nonlinear control algorithm is developed based on a Lyapunov function. Furthermore, an observer is also applied to estimate the air flow rate into the combustion room. The results show that the air fuel ratio and engine speed are stable under steady manoeuvres and the air-fuel ratio values are satisfactory.

The Optimization Of The Reliability And Construction Cost Of Rc Bridges, Wen-Hu Tsao, Chi-Way Lin, Ming-Te Liang, Wen-Lung Wen-Lung Tsao Tsao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the relationship between reliability and engineering system construction cost for obtaining optimum reliability was studied. This proposed approach was applied to the repair alternatives of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridges for acquiring the result of optimization analysis. According to the D(degree) E(extent) R (relevancy) evaluation method, which is widely used by civil engineers in Taiwan the existing RC bridges with and without stridden rivers can be divided into 21 and 17 substructures, respectively. The use of the weighting value and the cost relation is to attain the relationship between the total engineering system construction cost and the …

K-Hyponormality Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Raúl E. Curto, Sang Hoon Lee, Jasang Yoon Dec 2005

K-Hyponormality Of Multivariable Weighted Shifts, Raúl E. Curto, Sang Hoon Lee, Jasang Yoon

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We characterize joint k-hyponormality for 2-variable weighted shifts. Using this characterization we construct a family of examples which establishes and illustrates the gap between k-hyponormality and (k+1) -hyponormality for each k ≥ 1. As a consequence, we obtain an abstract solution to the Lifting Problem for Commuting Subnormals.

Charter School Type Matters When Examining Funding And Facilities: Evidence From California, Cathy Krop, Ron Zimmer Dec 2005

Charter School Type Matters When Examining Funding And Facilities: Evidence From California, Cathy Krop, Ron Zimmer

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Currently, charter schools represent one of the fastest growing movements of educational reform. The first charter school opened in 1992 and there are now over 3,400 charter schools nationwide. Despite this growth, we are only beginning to learn about the performance and operation of these schools. This article adds to our knowledge of charter schools both by examining the finances of charter schools in California, which has more charter students than any other state, and by highlighting their fiscal challenges. ...

It’S Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights In Personal Information., Vera Bergelson Dec 2005

It’S Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights In Personal Information., Vera Bergelson

Rutgers Law School (Newark) Faculty Papers

“It’s Personal But Is It Mine? Toward Property Rights in Personal Information” discusses the disturbing erosion of privacy suffered by the American society in recent years due to citizens’ loss of control over their personal information. This information, collected and traded by commercial enterprises, receives almost no protection under current law. I argue that, in order to protect privacy, individuals need to secure control over their information by becoming its legal owners.

In this article, I confront two fundamental questions that have not been specifically addressed in the privacy literature before: why property is the most appropriate regime for regulating …

Toward A Domain Theory Of Fluent Oral Reading With Expression, Reo H. Mcbride Dec 2005

Toward A Domain Theory Of Fluent Oral Reading With Expression, Reo H. Mcbride

Theses and Dissertations

Today's educators are in need of tests or rating systems that provide specific and valid feedback to parents, students and programs. This need includes the area of expressive fluent oral reading. One way to address this need is to provide a rating system based on theoretical models that explore how fluency develops. This study explores the dimensions, constructs, or aspects that make up fluency. It also explores whether there is a sequence or order in how fluent oral reading with expression develops and the theoretical reasons for that ordering. This study further addresses whether word recognition or accuracy confounds the …

Muslims In Europe: Challenges Of Cultural Integration, Steven W. Staninger Dec 2005

Muslims In Europe: Challenges Of Cultural Integration, Steven W. Staninger

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship

Muslims in Europe are faced challenges of cultural and religious integration which affect business practices and socio-economic success. This paper looks at the current Muslim situation in Europe from both a Muslim and native European perspective. The contrast between public information targeted at European Muslims originating from the European Union as opposed to Muslim home-countries is examined, as are the challenges posed by Muslim-majority Turkey’s application for membership in the European Union.
