Piezoresistive Sensing Of Bistable Micro Mechansim State, Jeffrey K. Anderson Nov 2005

Piezoresistive Sensing Of Bistable Micro Mechansim State, Jeffrey K. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility of on-chip sensing of bistable mechanism state using the piezoresistive properties of polysilicon, thus eliminating the need for electrical contacts. Changes in position are detected by observing changes in resistance across the mechanism. Sensing the state of bistable mechanisms is critical in their various applications. The research in this thesis advances the modeling techniques of MEMS devices which use piezoresistivity for position sensing. A fully compliant bistable micro mechanism was designed, fabricated, and tested to demonstrate the feasibility of this sensing technique. Testing results from two fabrication processes, Fairchild's SUMMiT …

Habitat Use Patterns Within The Home Range Of Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Southeastern Idaho, Laura T. Heady, John W. Laundré Nov 2005

Habitat Use Patterns Within The Home Range Of Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Southeastern Idaho, Laura T. Heady, John W. Laundré

Western North American Naturalist

Pygmy rabbits (Brachylagus idahoensis) are a small sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) obligate lagomorph found within the Great Basin of northwestern United States. Because of its reliance on sagebrush, this species is thought to be experiencing a major range reduction as a result of loss of sagebrush habitat. To aid in conservation of this species, we need to better understand its use of the sagebrush environment. We estimated summer home range use patterns by relocating 5 radio-collared pygmy rabbits (3 females and 2 males) over a 24-hour cycle. We then compared soil texture, shrub density, height, and canopy …

Morphology And Taxonomy Of Klamath Basin Suckers (Catostomidae), Douglas F. Markle, Martin R. Cavalluzzi, David C. Simon

Western North American Naturalist

We examined morphology of 4 sucker species (Catostomidae) from Klamath and Rogue River basins, Oregon and California. Different pairs of these species have been suspected of hybridizing, and field biologists have experienced difficulty identifying individuals in some areas. The suite of morphological characters used for initial identification was poorly supported by other morphometric characters but well supported by meristic characters, especially when analyses were restricted geographically. In some species sexual dimorphism was evident, with males having longer pectoral fins and females having longer pre-anal counts and measurements. Each species showed geographic differentiation, either between the Lost River subbasin and other …

Systematic Relationships Of Pityopus Californicus Inferred From Large Ribosomal Subunit (26s) Rrna Gene Sequences, Ray Neyland Nov 2005

Systematic Relationships Of Pityopus Californicus Inferred From Large Ribosomal Subunit (26s) Rrna Gene Sequences, Ray Neyland

Western North American Naturalist

Pityopus californicus is a rare mycoheterotrophic herb that occurs in coniferous and mixed forests of western North America. Previous authors have speculated that Pityopus californicus is not a true species but is a recurring hybrid. The reputed parental candidates of P. californicus include the closely related Pleuricospora fimbriolata, Hemitomes congestum, and Monotropa hypopithys. However, a phylogenetic analysis of large ribosomal subunit (26S) rRNA gene sequences suggests that Pityopus californicus is sister to Monotropa hypopithys and not a recurring hybrid.

A Novel Cysteine-Rich Domain Of Sep15 Mediates The Interaction With Udp-Glucose:Glycoprotein Glucosyltransferase, Vyacheslav M. Labunskyy, Andrew D. Ferguson, Dmitri E. Fomenko, Yogarany Chelliah, Dolph L. Hatfield, Vadim N. Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Selenium is an essential trace element with potent cancer prevention activity in mammals. The 15-kDa selenoprotein (Sep15) has been implicated in the chemopreventive effect of dietary selenium. Although the precise function of Sep15 remains elusive, Sep15 copurifies with UDP-glucose:glycoprotein glucosyltransferase (GT), an essential regulator of quality control mechanisms within the endoplasmic reticulum. Recent studies identified two GT and two Sep15 homologues in mammals. We characterize interactions between these protein families in this report. Sep15 and GT form a tight 1:1 complex, and these interactions are conserved between mammals and fruit flies. In mammalian cells, Sep15 co-immunoprecipitates with both GT isozymes. …

The Tree-Thinking Challenge, David A. Baum, Stacey Dewitt Smith, Samuel S.S. Donovan Nov 2005

The Tree-Thinking Challenge, David A. Baum, Stacey Dewitt Smith, Samuel S.S. Donovan

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The preferred interpretation of a phylogenetic tree is as a depiction of lines of descent. That is, trees communicate the evolutionary relationships among elements, such as genes or species, that connect a sample of branch tips. Under this interpretation, the nodes (branching points) on a tree are taken to correspond to actual biological entities that existed in the past: ancestral populations or ancestral genes. However, tree diagrams are also used in many nonevolutionary contexts, which can cause confusion. For example, trees can depict the clustering of genes on the basis of their expression profiles from microarrays, or the clustering of …

Great Basin Summer Range Forage Quality: Do Plants Nutrients Meet Elk Requirements?, Jeffrey L. Beck, James M. Peek Nov 2005

Great Basin Summer Range Forage Quality: Do Plants Nutrients Meet Elk Requirements?, Jeffrey L. Beck, James M. Peek

Western North American Naturalist

Understanding the relative ability of forages to meet the needs of prime-age females, the productive component of elk (Cervus elaphus) populations, is necessary to decipher reasons for declines and potential for population growth. Information on forage nutrient dynamics for elk on Great Basin summer–fall ranges is lacking. Our primary objectives were to estimate nutrient levels in common elk forage species in northeastern Nevada at 3 time periods and evaluate whether nutrient levels met good requirements for lactating cow elk at time periods across summers. We compared crude protein, digestible energy, and macromineral levels in 2 forbs, 6 grasses, …

Recently, a respected jurist has lamented the declining number of federal jury trials. Chief Judge William Young of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, writing in the Federal Lawyer, pointed out that jury trials in federal civil cases declined 26% in the decade between 1989 and 1999, which he attributed to four factors: the district court judiciary’s “loss of focus” on the core function of trying jury cases; the business community’s loss of interest in jury adjudication (“opting out of the legal system altogether” in favor of arbitration); Congress’s “marginalizing the district court judiciary”; and …

Parametrizations And Dynamical Analysis Of Angle-Integrated Cross Sections For Double Photoionization Including Nondipole Effects, Andrei Y. Istomin, Anthony F. Starace, N. L. Manakov, A. V. Meremianin, A. S. Kheifets, Igor Bray

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Similarly to differential cross sections for one-electron photoionization, the doubly differential cross section for double photoionization (DPI) may be conveniently described by four parameters: the singly differential (with respect to energy sharing) cross section (sigma0), the dipole asymmetry parameter (beta), and two nondipole asymmetry parameters (gamma and delta). Here we derive two model-independent representations for these parameters for DPI from a 1S0 atomic bound state: (i) in terms of one-dimensional integrals of the polarization-invariant DPI amplitudes and (ii) in terms of the exact two-electron reduced matrix elements. For DPI of He at excess energies, Eexc, of 100 eV, 450 eV, …

Detection Of The Baryon Acoustic Peak In The Large-Scale Correlation Function Of Sdss Luminous Red Galaxies, Daniel J. Eisenstein, Idit Zehavi, David W. Hogg, Michael Richmond, Et Al. Nov 2005

Detection Of The Baryon Acoustic Peak In The Large-Scale Correlation Function Of Sdss Luminous Red Galaxies, Daniel J. Eisenstein, Idit Zehavi, David W. Hogg, Michael Richmond, Et Al.

Articles

We present the large-scale correlation function measured from a spectroscopic sample of 46,748 luminous red galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The survey region covers 0.72h−3Gpc3 over 3816 square degrees and 0.16 < z < 0.47, making it the best sample yet for the study of large-scale structure. We find a well-detected peak in the correlation function at 100h−1Mpc separation that is an excellent match to the predicted shape and location of the imprint of the recombination-epoch acoustic oscillations on the low-redshift clustering of matter. This detection demonstrates the linear growth of structure by gravitational instability between z ≈ 1000 and the present and confirms a firm prediction of the standard cosmological theory. The acoustic peak provides a standard ruler by which we can measure the ratio of the distances to z = 0.35 and z = 1089 to 4% fractional accuracy and the absolute distance to z = 0.35 to 5% accuracy. From the overall shape of the correlation function, we measure the matter density mh2 to 8% and find agreement with the value from cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies. Independent of the constraints provided by the CMB acoustic scale, we find m = 0.273±0.025+0.123(1+w0)+0.137 K. Including the CMB acoustic scale, we find that the spatial curvature is K = −0.010± 0.009 if the dark energy is a cosmological constant. More generally, our results provide a measurement of cosmological distance, and hence an argument for dark energy, based on a geometric method with the same simple physics as the microwave background anisotropies. The standard cosmological model convincingly passes these new and robust tests of its fundamental properties. (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).
