Development Of A Centralized Database System For Embracing Horses And The Urban Farm, April D. Hoskins

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Embracing Horses and The Urban Farm at Stapleton, is a nonprofit organization whose mission statement is to connect children from inner city neighborhoods to their natural environment, instilling a sense of respect, appreciation, and, ultimately responsibility for the plants and animals which share that space and a working knowledge of responsible stewardship of those plants and animals. To achieve this mission a paper based and generic database system have been utilized to record information pertaining to volunteers, financial donors, program offerings, and mailing distributions. These current systems no longer meet the needs of the organization, as the number of children …

Proposed Federal Definition Of "Internet Job Applicant" Suggests Need For Revised Human Resource Policies, Carson Strege-Flora Oct 2005

Proposed Federal Definition Of "Internet Job Applicant" Suggests Need For Revised Human Resource Policies, Carson Strege-Flora

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

After several years of discussion, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, along with several other federal agencies, has proposed a new definition of “Internet job applicant” to help employers understand how to treat such applicants. The explosion over the past decade of Internet recruiting prompted the need for clarification of how employers must treat applicants for purposes of federal antidiscrimination law and recordkeeping requirements. The new guidelines suggest that employers engaged in Internet recruiting should review their hiring policies to ensure that their treatment of Internet job applicants complies with the proposed guidelines. This Article suggests that employers avoid violating federal …

The Fact Act Of 2003: Securing Personal Information In An Age Of Identity Theft, Terrance J. Keenan Oct 2005

The Fact Act Of 2003: Securing Personal Information In An Age Of Identity Theft, Terrance J. Keenan

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 (“FACT Act”) makes incremental progress toward its goal of improving the protection of consumers and businesses in an age of increasingly sophisticated scams and cons. Congress enacted the FACT Act in order to further address the problems of identity theft, improve resolution of disputes over consumer credit information, enhance accuracy of consumer credit records, further regulate use of credit information, and broaden consumer access to credit information. The FACT Act imposes new business practices on companies that handle personal consumer information by requiring them to share with consumers information about data …

"I Didn't Know My Client Wasn't Complying!" The Heightened Obligation Lawyers Have To Ensure Clients Follow Court Orders In Litigation Matters, Mafé Rajul

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

Ensuring a client’s compliance with court orders and federal law is becoming a bigger responsibility for attorneys. This is because courts and Congress are starting to hold attorneys to higher standards with respect to their clients’ compliance with litigation duties and with federal law. This Article will address the duties Congress imposed on lawyers through the Sarbanes-Oxley Act with respect to up-the-ladder reporting and will parallel such standards with those set by the Southern District of New York court in Zubulake with respect to preserving electronic discovery in anticipation of litigation. Although the duties imposed by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act and …

On-Demand Tutoring In Distance Education: Intrinsically-Motivated, Scalable Interpersonal Interaction To Improve Achievement, Completion, And Satisfaction, Peter B. Williams Oct 2005

On-Demand Tutoring In Distance Education: Intrinsically-Motivated, Scalable Interpersonal Interaction To Improve Achievement, Completion, And Satisfaction, Peter B. Williams

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to test an intrinsically-motivated interaction approach, designed to increase distance education support, for both content and motivation, in a cost-effective manner. The literature summarized shows that distance education students desire content and motivational support beyond course materials and are limited in their success without it. Further, while researchers explore increased interaction as a solution, professors usually do not have time for it and attempts to provide it are often restricted by institutions' limited resources. Very little has been published on the effects of distance education tutors and the need for more research in this …

Sluice Boxes On The Shores: An Environmental History Of Gold Mining On Oregon's South Coast, Tania Louise Hyatt-Evenson Oct 2005

Sluice Boxes On The Shores: An Environmental History Of Gold Mining On Oregon's South Coast, Tania Louise Hyatt-Evenson

Dissertations and Theses

Environmental historians have researched, analyzed, and concluded that gold mining significantly altered the environment in Southern Oregon. Environmental case studies have examined mining's impact on the watersheds in the Rogue Valley, but none have analyzed the effect gold miners had on the Southern Oregon coast. While gold mining occurred on the South Coast from the 1850s to the 1940s, on a smaller scale, the impact from environmental change is just as significant. The purpose of this study is to understand how mining changed the landscape of the South Coast, and how this change affected the human populations that lived in …

Progress Towards Terahertz Acoustic Phonon Generation In Doping Superlattices, Thomas E. Wilson Oct 2005

Progress Towards Terahertz Acoustic Phonon Generation In Doping Superlattices, Thomas E. Wilson

Physics Faculty Research

Progress is described in experiments to generate coherent terahertz acoustic phonons in silicon doping superlattices by the resonant absorption of nanosecond-pulsed far-infrared laser radiation. Future experiments are proposed that would use the superlattice as a transducer in a terahertz cryogenic acoustic reflection microscope with sub-nanometer resolution.

Integral Neutron Multiplicity Measurements From Cosmic Ray Interactions In Lead, Thomas E. Ward, Alexander A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolai A. Kudryashev, Denis E. Beller Oct 2005

Integral Neutron Multiplicity Measurements From Cosmic Ray Interactions In Lead, Thomas E. Ward, Alexander A. Rimsky-Korsakov, Nikolai A. Kudryashev, Denis E. Beller

Transmutation Sciences Physics (TRP)

Sixty element 3He neutron multiplicity detector systems were designed, constructed and tested for use in cosmic ray experiments with a 30-cm cube lead target. A series of measurements were performed for the cosmic ray configuration at ground level (3 meters water equivalent, mwe), in the St. Petersburg metro tunnel (185 mwe), and in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland (583 and 1185 mwe). Anomalous coincidence events with charged cosmic ray particles at sea level produced events with 100-120 neutrons due possibly to the total disintegration of the Pb nucleus. These events were also detected at 185 mwe, but the particles …

Carotenoid Availability Affects The Development Of A Colour-Based Mate Preference And The Sensory Bias To Which It Is Genetically Linked, Gregory F. Grether, Gita R. Kolluru, F. Helen Rodd, Jennifer De La Cerda, Kaori Shimazaki Oct 2005

Carotenoid Availability Affects The Development Of A Colour-Based Mate Preference And The Sensory Bias To Which It Is Genetically Linked, Gregory F. Grether, Gita R. Kolluru, F. Helen Rodd, Jennifer De La Cerda, Kaori Shimazaki

Biological Sciences

Regardless of their origins, mate preferences should, in theory, be shaped by their benefits in a mating context. Here we show that the female preference for carotenoid colouration in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) exhibits a phenotypically plastic response to carotenoid availability, confirming a key prediction of sexual selection theory. Earlier work indicated that this mate preference is genetically linked to, and may be derived from, a sensory bias that occurs in both sexes: attraction to orange objects. The original function of this sensory bias is unknown, but it may help guppies find orange-coloured fruits in the rainforest streams of …
