Using Partial Least Squares Approach To Predict Factors That Contribute To The Impact Of E-Folios On Pre-Service Teachers' Learning, Tasha Hoover Christmas Jan 2005

Using Partial Least Squares Approach To Predict Factors That Contribute To The Impact Of E-Folios On Pre-Service Teachers' Learning, Tasha Hoover Christmas

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Teacher-education programs have the responsibility to prepare their future teachers by instilling in them the desire, confidence, and ability to be reflective practitioners, lifelong learners who continues to grow and develop professionally after graduation (Klenowski, 2000). In an effort to fulfill this responsibility, Teacher-education programs are beginning to make reforms to adhere to national standards, which prompt them to create alternative means for assessing pre-service teacher's performance and the success of the teacher-education program. One such alternative is the electronic portfolio. This study investigated the use of Louisiana colleges and universities' electronic portfolio system known as PASS-PORT. The purpose of …

Public Relations Ethics: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Paul Stuart Lieber Jan 2005

Public Relations Ethics: A Cross-Cultural Analysis, Paul Stuart Lieber

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This two-part study employed 11 qualitative interviews, the Defining Issues Test (DIT) and a quantitative version of the five-factor TARES test to complete the first cross-cultural analysis of the ethical decision-making patterns of public relations practitioners. The DIT is an instrument based on Kohlberg’s (1969) moral development theory, the TARES test composed of 14 self-enforced, ethical consideration statements derived from the research of Baker and Martinson (2001). Results indicate no statistically significant difference in levels of moral development and ethical consideration between sampled practitioners in Australia, New Zealand and the United States (Lieber, 2003). This finding argues for a vocational …

Genetic Diversity Among Sugarcane Clones Using Target Region Amplification Polymorphism (Trap) Markers And Pedigree Relationships, Jie Alojado Arro Jan 2005

Genetic Diversity Among Sugarcane Clones Using Target Region Amplification Polymorphism (Trap) Markers And Pedigree Relationships, Jie Alojado Arro

LSU Master's Theses

Genetic diversity is indispensable to sustain genetic gain in breeding programs. Cultivated sugarcane is a highly heterozygous hybrid derived from crossing two highly heterozygous parents. Sugarcane breeders traditionally rely on pedigree records to select parents. Molecular markers now make it possible to assess genetic diversity at the DNA level. Sixty three sugarcane clones were characterised using Target Region Amplification Polymorphism (TRAP) markers and pedigree relationship (Coefficient of parentage (COP)). The TRAP is a PCR-based marker with a fixed primer designed from Expressed Sequence Tag (EST) sequences paired with an arbitrary primer. It is supposed to unravel trait based polymorphism in …

Development And Validation Of Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool, Molly Murphy Wittig Jan 2005

Development And Validation Of Child Routines Questionnaire: Preschool, Molly Murphy Wittig

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Experts emphasize routines as a paramount practice in successful child rearing (Fiese, 2002). Only recently, however, has empirical evidence begun to corroborate this theory. While many researchers and clinicians have documented the use of daily child routines in their parenting packages and treatment studies, none has measured the effects of child routines directly. The emergence of The Child Routines Questionnaire offered ample evidence of the importance of child routines in school-age children. Significant findings link a lack of routines to child behavior problems, poor parenting practices, and parental psychopathology (Sytsma et al., 2001; Sytsma-Jordan, Kelley, & Henderson, 2002; Jordan, 2003). …

The King George Island Mounds Site (16lv22): A Late Archaic Mound Complex Along The Lower Amite River, Fiona Helena Vasbinder Jan 2005

The King George Island Mounds Site (16lv22): A Late Archaic Mound Complex Along The Lower Amite River, Fiona Helena Vasbinder

LSU Master's Theses

The King George Island Mounds site (16LV22) is one of four conical mound sites located along the lower Amite River in Livingston Parish, Louisiana. Gagliano originally reported the site in 1957 as containing two conical mounds. Initially, it was postulated that the Lower Amite River mounds might date to the Marksville period based on the similarities of shape. Recent research conducted at the site indicates that the site may contain up to five conical mounds that date to the Late Archaic period. Geomorphological, pedological, and archaeological data indicate an initial Archaic occupation. Archaic period artifacts were recovered from excavations above, …

Efficient Automatic Correction And Segmentation Based 3d Visualization Of Magnetic Resonance Images, Mikhail V. Milchenko

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the recent years, the demand for automated processing techniques for digital medical image volumes has increased substantially. Existing algorithms, however, still often require manual interaction, and newly developed automated techniques are often intended for a narrow segment of processing needs. The goal of this research was to develop algorithms suitable for fast and effective correction and advanced visualization of digital MR image volumes with minimal human operator interaction. This research has resulted in a number of techniques for automated processing of MR image volumes, including a novel MR inhomogeneity correction algorithm derivative surface fitting (dsf), automatic tissue detection algorithm …

Comorbidity Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Low Income Urban Youth, Karen Ann Laslie Jan 2005

Comorbidity Of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Among Low Income Urban Youth, Karen Ann Laslie

LSU Master's Theses

Chronic exposure to violence is becoming increasingly common for urban children, placing them at an increased risk of developing psychopathology. For children exposed to chronic violence, two common diagnoses are Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). However, symptom overlap between these disorders has made differential diagnosis difficult. Most studies looking at the comorbidity between ADHD and PTSD have focused only on maltreated children. This study is the first to look at comorbid rates of ADHD and PTSD for children exposed to chronic violence, not limited to maltreatment. Specifically, this study evaluated rates of PTSD symptoms in children with …

Long Term Pressure Behavior In Turbidite Reservoirs, Feng Wang Jan 2005

Long Term Pressure Behavior In Turbidite Reservoirs, Feng Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we investigated several possible mechanisms that would give rise to the anomalous pressure behavior (early concave-up on Horner plot or upward drift on the derivative curve of the log-log plot and asymmetry between the pressure drawdown and buildup behavior) sometimes encountered in the turbidite reservoirs in GOM primarily using numerical simulation and 2-level experimental designs. We ascertained the most influential parameters to the pressure behavior and identified that multilayer commingled system and the leaky compartment model are the most probable mechanisms to cause the anomalous behavior due to layer or zone property contrast to a certain degree. …

Riding Out The Risks: An Ethnographic Study Of Risk Perceptions In A South Louisiana Bayou Community, Susan Camille Manning Jan 2005

Riding Out The Risks: An Ethnographic Study Of Risk Perceptions In A South Louisiana Bayou Community, Susan Camille Manning

LSU Master's Theses

This ethnographic study explores the risk perceptions of a small unincorporated coastal community in southeastern Louisiana. This community has experienced social and environmental change due to events including tropical storms and hurricanes, erosion, subsidence, oil and gas activities, development, and the impact of global seafood markets. Many global risk perception studies have focused on the perception of risk to human health and property connected with natural and technological disasters, but few have explored the issue of minorities and small at-risk communities. To explore this theoretical and methodological gap, this study uses a variety of qualitative ethnographic methods to examine a …

Some Bargain: How Bankruptcy Courts May Now Require A Debtor To Relinquish Expectations Of Privacy As A Condition Of The Bankruptcy Bargain, Jennifer Taylor Jan 2005

Some Bargain: How Bankruptcy Courts May Now Require A Debtor To Relinquish Expectations Of Privacy As A Condition Of The Bankruptcy Bargain, Jennifer Taylor

UC Law Journal

There was a time when incurring debt and becoming insolvent was considered a crime. Although those days are long gone, discharge of debt in bankruptcy continues to be premised upon the debtor's cooperation in the "bankruptcy bargain." Honesty and disclosure of certain relevant information is required in exchange for a "fresh start." This Note explores the level of scrutiny that an individual debtor must submit to as part of the bankruptcy bargain by asking and answering the Fourth Amendment question: What is society "prepared to recognize as reasonable?" Contrary to the recent opinion of one bankruptcy court that went so …

Road Rage And R.S. 2477: Judicial And Administrative Responsibility For Resolving Road Claims On Public Lands, Bret C. Birdsong Jan 2005

Road Rage And R.S. 2477: Judicial And Administrative Responsibility For Resolving Road Claims On Public Lands, Bret C. Birdsong

UC Law Journal

Throughout the west, efforts to protect wild lands are being hampered by counties' and states' assertions of road ownership on public lands. On several occasions in the past decade, rural westerners have climbed atop bulldozers and scraped roads across some of the nation's most pristine lands, including National Parks, National Forests, and National Monuments, in the latest battle of the "sagebrush rebellion." The cover of Time magazine made one bulldozing county commissioner, Dick Carver of Nye County, Nevada, a folk hero for many rural westerners. Other counties' deployment of bulldozers has landed them in court, where they defend against the …

Two Wrongs Don't Make A Patent Right, David Catechi Jan 2005

Two Wrongs Don't Make A Patent Right, David Catechi

UC Law Journal

Recent litigation over genetically modified corn reveals an increasing imbalance between the property rights of genetic seed manufacturers and the rights of individual farmers. Common-law property doctrines and traditional patent law fail to protect farmers leaving them exposed to both potential genetic contamination of their crops and costly patent infringement liability. This Note proposes a simple yet effective solution-Notice. Requiring patent holders to provide notice to alleged infringing farmers sufficient to enable the farmer to cease infringement balances the rights of both the patent holder and the farmer. Litigation in both the United States and Canada regarding gentically modified corn …

Associations Of Avian And Herpetofauna Communities With Forest Management At Multiple Spatial Scales, Holly Grace Legrand Jan 2005

Associations Of Avian And Herpetofauna Communities With Forest Management At Multiple Spatial Scales, Holly Grace Legrand

LSU Master's Theses

Decline of amphibians, reptiles, and numerous Neotropical migrant birds has been attributed to habitat destruction and alteration, which warrants examination of these groups in managed forests and their association with habitat characteristics at multiple spatial scales. We surveyed avifauna and herpetofauna communities in 3 managed forests in Louisiana during 2003-2004. Study areas included Sherburne Wildlife Management Area (WMA), a bottomland hardwood forest under uneven-aged management, Ben’s Creek WMA, an even-aged, short-rotation loblolly pine plantation, and Sandy Hollow WMA, a longleaf pine-savannah maintained with prescribed fire. Field techniques included surveys consisting of avian point counts, drift fence arrays (PFFT), cover boards, …

Persuasion, Transparency, And Government Speech, Gia B. Lee Jan 2005

Persuasion, Transparency, And Government Speech, Gia B. Lee

UC Law Journal

Recent news reports indicate that federal, state, and local government entities and officials engage in pseudonymous or anonymous communications more often than we might imagine. Current trends, including advances in technology and the blurring of the public/private distinction, suggest that those types of communications will become only more frequent. Yet thus far there has been no sustained legal or constitutional analysis of such communications. This Article addresses that omission. It examines the issue of veiled government communications by drawing upon not only constitutional theory and case law but also social science research that explains how governments persuade and how citizens …

Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle Jan 2005

Castle To Condo, Country To Corporation: What Becomes Of Hamlet In Almereyda's Modern World, Melissa Trosclair Daigle

LSU Master's Theses

This paper looks into the inner workings of Michael Almereyda's Hamlet (2000). Even though Almereyda updates the setting and cuts many of the lines, sometimes entire scenes, from the source text, he is able to convey the some of the themes through his use of technology and media. While some themes do transfer into the postmodern setting, the places of discord are most interesting. Of particular interest is his use of modern technologies to display the corruption found in Shakespeare's play. These technologies, including speakerphone, surveillance equipment, wiring devices, handheld camcorders, and still photography, create an atmosphere of both continual …

A Proposed Antitrust Approach To Buyers' Competitive Conduct, Thomas A. Piraino Jr. Jan 2005

A Proposed Antitrust Approach To Buyers' Competitive Conduct, Thomas A. Piraino Jr.

UC Law Journal

This Article proposes a new means of regulating buyers' exercise of market power under the federal antitrust laws. The federal courts urgently need to adopt such an approach, because buyers have increased their market power in many domestic businesses. Wal-Mart's power to influence competition in retail markets is only one example of the increased market power of buyers in the United States economy. The courts' current approach to buyers' competitive conduct is confusing and inconsistent. As a result, business executives are uncertain as to the boundaries of legality for various types of buyer conduct.

This Article describes a comprehensive means …

Implementing Atkins: The Strengths & Weaknesses Of In Re Hawthorne, Christopher Scott Tarbell Jan 2005

Implementing Atkins: The Strengths & Weaknesses Of In Re Hawthorne, Christopher Scott Tarbell

UC Law Journal

In 2002, the United States Supreme Court decided the case of Atkins v. Virginia. In Atkins, the Court created a categorical exemption from the death penalty for the mentally retarded, holding that the execution of such individuals violates the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishments. However, the Court left to the states the difficult task of implementing the newly announced exemption.

The California Supreme Court confronted this challenge in the case of In re Hawthorne. In Hawthorne, the court was forced to decide what standards and procedures a court should use in assessing claims for Atkins relief raised by …

Civil Liability For Attorneys To Adverse Parties When A Settlement Agreement Is Breached In California, Daivd M. Lacy Kusters Jan 2005

Civil Liability For Attorneys To Adverse Parties When A Settlement Agreement Is Breached In California, Daivd M. Lacy Kusters

UC Law Journal

When a settlement agreement is breached in California, the parties are generally solely liable for the breach. Occasionally, however, settlement agreements can create duties running between attorneys and adverse parties. In these situations, when a settlement agreement fails through no or negligible fault of the opposing party, the opposing party may be able to seek remedy through civil liability against the attorney. This Note provides an overview of the general duty that attorneys owe to third parties. It examines various causes of action available to plaintiffs and the various factors influencing liability. Lastly, this Note details a proposed virtual per …

Putting Down Roots In Environmental Literacy: A Study Of Middle School Students' Participation In Louisiana Sea Grant's Coastal Roots Project, Rachel L. Somers Jan 2005

Putting Down Roots In Environmental Literacy: A Study Of Middle School Students' Participation In Louisiana Sea Grant's Coastal Roots Project, Rachel L. Somers

LSU Master's Theses

Few people realize that in Louisiana land is lost to open water at about a rate of 24 square miles a year, faster than anywhere else in the world (Barras, Beville, Britsch, Hartley, Hawes, Jonston, Kemp, Kinler, Martucci, Porthouse, Reed, Roy, Sapkota, & Suhayda, 2003). Not only is the public low to moderately environmentally literate, there is a need to reach students early on to ensure the greatest benefit. This is the main reason why Louisiana Sea Grant¡¦s Coastal Roots Wetland Seedling Nursery Project (Coastal Roots) came into inception. The goal of the project is to improve environmental literacy of …

The Next Step In Dna Databank Expansion? The Constitutionality Of Dna Sampling Of Former Arrestees, Jacqueline K. S. Lew Jan 2005

The Next Step In Dna Databank Expansion? The Constitutionality Of Dna Sampling Of Former Arrestees, Jacqueline K. S. Lew

UC Law Journal

This Note examines current developments in state DNA databank laws and the controversy surrounding the passage of California's latest DNA databank statute to predict that the next step in DNA databank expansion has arrived-namely, the collection of DNA from former arrestees, who neither have been convicted of a felony nor remain in government custody. Ultimately, the Note suggests that despite the recent trend towards expanding DNA databases around the country, the DNA sampling of former arrestees crosses a bright line that represents the constitutional end of such expansion.

In pointing out that courts have often relied on a plaintiff's status …

Responsibilities And Leadership Styles Of Radiologic Technology Program Directors: Implications For Leadership Development, Laura S. Aaron Jan 2005

Responsibilities And Leadership Styles Of Radiologic Technology Program Directors: Implications For Leadership Development, Laura S. Aaron

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Leaders in higher education serve in a variety of roles and many times have very little administrative experience for the positions in which they serve. Radiologic technology program directors are the types of leaders who need strong leadership skills to meet the challenges of their role as program chairs. This study examined the responsibilities of program directors and their satisfaction with their leadership skills in relation to the responsibilities. In addition, the leadership styles of program directors were investigated to determine how those styles are related to the responsibilities and their satisfaction with their leadership skills. This study utilized a …

Local Narratives: An Approach To Participatory Planning In Community Revitalization Projects, Herpreet Kaur Singh Jan 2005

Local Narratives: An Approach To Participatory Planning In Community Revitalization Projects, Herpreet Kaur Singh

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis explores what can happen when planners and designers allow local narratives to inspire and inform all stages of community planning and design processes. Specifically, this paper suggests how local narratives can contribute to the ongoing revitalization efforts underway in Old South Baton Rouge, a historically significant, low-income, African-American community in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A personal narrative introduces the subject matter at hand. Thereafter, each chapter is preceded with a narrative interlude to add texture to the ideas presented herein. Chapter two underscores the theoretical and practical relationship between place, memory and development, particularly as this relationship applies to …
