Two weeks later, the survey was posted on the Athletic Training Education Listserve. Two hundred and twelve surveys were returned. The …
Arithmetic And Algebra Word Problems: Preservice Teachers' Content Knowledge, Attitudes, And Appreciation Of Students' Strategies, Marc D. Michael
Arithmetic And Algebra Word Problems: Preservice Teachers' Content Knowledge, Attitudes, And Appreciation Of Students' Strategies, Marc D. Michael
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The arithmetic and algebraic word problem-solving skills, strategy preferences, and attitudes of preservice elementary and secondary teachers were investigated using a mixed methodology. Teachers' appreciations of student solutions were also examined. Prospective elementary teachers demonstrated flexible problem-solving behaviors while their secondary counterparts tended to prefer algebraic strategies exclusively. In general, the prospective teachers did not demonstrate a greater appreciation for those types of strategies that were typical to their level of training. When communicating the characteristics of an effective strategy, preservice teachers were concerned with organization and clarity rather than the mathematical relevance or appropriateness of the strategy itself. The …
Role Of The Host Cell In The Type Iii Translocation Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exoenzyme S, Elizabeth A. Rucks
Role Of The Host Cell In The Type Iii Translocation Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Exoenzyme S, Elizabeth A. Rucks
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Exoenzyme S (ExoS) is a bifunctional toxin that is directly translocated into eukaryotic cells by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa) type III secretory (T3S) process. The N-terminal region of ExoS includes a GTPase activating protein (GAP) activity and the C-terminal region includes an ADP-ribosyltransferase (ADPRT) activity. The T3S-translocation (T3S-T) of ExoS allows the bacteria to directly manipulate host cell function, thereby contributing the virulence of Pa. A cell culture model of infection was developed to study the effects of ExoS on cell function, which differentiates the effects of ExoS expression from other bacterial effects. Previous studies found that ExoS inactivates cell …

Effects Of Fire On Home Range Size, Site Fidelity And Habitat Associations Of Grassland Birds Overwintering In Southeast Texas, Heather Quebedeaux Baldwin
LSU Master's Theses
Understanding habitat affinities of wintering grassland birds is pertinent to their conservation. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the 1) effect burn history has on vegetation structure in coastal prairie; 2) habitat associations of the most common avian species; and, 3) home range size and site fidelity of Le Conte's Sparrow (LCSP). Data were collected on sites with 1-, 2- and 3-year burn histories during the winter of 2002 at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, Texas. Line transects were conducted to estimate bird abundance and vegetation measurements were recorded for herbaceous density, shrub density, and community type. Twenty-six Le …
Ethnic Differences Among Maltreated Youths With Respect To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Related Symptoms, Amie Marie Lemos-Miller
Ethnic Differences Among Maltreated Youths With Respect To Posttraumatic Stress Disorder And Related Symptoms, Amie Marie Lemos-Miller
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Symptoms associated with the development and maintenance of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were examined in a diverse group of maltreated adolescents. The first hypothesis was that levels of PTSD symptomatology, depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions were expected to significantly differ among African-American, Caucasian, Hispanic, and Multiracial adolescents. The second hypothesis was that ethnicity was expected to significantly moderate a relationship between (1) severity of PTSD as measured by symptomatology, and (2) the expression of related symptoms (i.e., depression, dissociation, anger, and maladaptive cognitions). Regarding hypothesis one, African-Americans reported less depressive symptoms overall than other ethnic groups, with Caucasians and …
The Social Significance Of Mint Tea Consumption In Morocco: Reflections On Its Symbolic Representation Of Muslim Faith, Gender Prescriptions, Socio-Economics And Hospitality, Monika Sudakov
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this analysis is to explore the ways in which the Moroccan ritual of mint tea consumption is symbolic of and informed by the underlying core values of Moroccan culture. In particular, issues of Muslim faith, gender prescriptions, socio-economics and hospitality will be explored in detail as they pertain to the ritual of mint tea consumption. The analysis will show that ultimately "what and how you drink is what you are." Understanding the particular consumptive practices of a culture is key to understanding what is considered to be "right" and "natural" behavior by individuals within that culture.

An Exploratory Study Of Effectiveness In Alumni Relations At Four Research Universities, Jennifer Lynnette Hurwitz
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Alumni relations programs exist to further the goals of institutions while meeting the interests of alumni (Webb, 1989). In healthy university environments, the relationship between the alumni and the institution is mutually beneficial (Webb, 1989). In an era of accountability, college and university administrators require evidence that programs are satisfying the missions and accomplishing the goals of the institution (Brant, 2002). Alumni relations professionals are challenged to find ways to include as measures of program effectiveness evaluations of the relationship building aspects of alumni programming; The purpose of this research was to explore how senior alumni administrative officers at four …

Closing The Performance Gap In A 4th Wave And Post-Modern Society: Lessons From The Field, J. Q. Adams
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
The USA is undergoing tremendous cultural changes as we open the first decade of the 21st century. In this paper the author discusses the need to close the performance gap that exists between White, African American, and Latino/a students. To do so, educators must carefully consider several important cultural forces. The author examines the shift in demographic patterns as well as the impact of the 4th Wave and the emergence of post-modernism on education and society.

The Irb And Classroom Research, Jeffrey B. Hecht
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Scholars conducting research in classrooms face a myriad of ethical issues somewhat unique to the educational setting. While the Code of Federal Regulations (45 CFR 46) generally provides that educational research be classified as exempt from review by Institutional Review Boards, those same regulations provide a host of special conditions under which classroom research must not be considered exempt. Depending on the study, classroom research may also involve issues of power and coercion (especially when the researcher is also the instructor); deception (when part or all of the nature of a study must be hidden from the subjects to avoid …

Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Research suggests that families who make active choices regarding their child’s education differ from families who do not. Differences between families of private (voucher), charter, and public school students were examined using data collected as part of the evaluation of the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Program. While both voucher and charter school families were more satisfied than public school families with their child’s school, charter school families were found to differ from both voucher and public school students in that they were more White, were of higher income, were more likely to be married, and were more highly educated.

Small Steps: Teacher Change In A Reform Mathematics Curriculum, Tom Fox
Small Steps: Teacher Change In A Reform Mathematics Curriculum, Tom Fox
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
An experienced mathematics teacher in a rural high school in the United States was studied as she first implemented a reform calculus curriculum. Her instruction was compared to her previous practice using a curriculum not constructed with the reform movement in mind. Despite her early attempts to make her instruction more student-centered, the teachers’ actions in the classroom were similar in many ways; demonstrating solutions to prototype problems was an important instructional strategy that she used in both curricula. However, the teacher showed an increased focus on conceptual knowledge and on the use of graphing calculator technology. The reform text …
The Role Of Classroom Experience In Preservice And Inservice Teachers’ Assessment Literacy, Craig A. Mertler
The Role Of Classroom Experience In Preservice And Inservice Teachers’ Assessment Literacy, Craig A. Mertler
Mid-Western Educational Researcher
Assessing student performance is one of the most critical aspects of the job of a classroom teacher; however, many teachers do not feel adequately prepared to assess their students’ performance. In order to measure and compare preservice and inservice teachers’ “assessment literacy,” two groups were surveyed using the Classroom Assessment Literacy Inventory (CALI) which was designed to parallel the Standards for Teacher Competence in the Educational Assessment of Students. Inservice teachers performed highest on Standard 3—Administering, Scoring, and Interpreting the Results of Assessments and lowest on Standard 5—Developing Valid Grading Procedures. Preservice teachers performed highest on Standard 1—Choosing Appropriate Assessment …
