Behold I, Kent P. Jackson
Behold I, Kent P. Jackson
BYU Studies
On two occasions while he worked on his New Translation of Genesis in 1830, the Prophet Joseph Smith dictated to his scribe Oliver Cowdery a word combination that in English is awkward and ungrammatical, though in the Hebrew it is not: "Behold I." The first occurrence reads, "Behold I I am the Lord God Almighty." The second reads, "Behold I send me." Both passages are in the Book of Moses in the Pear of Great Price, but "Behold I" is not found in either of those passages today because, after the time of Joseph Smith, each was edited out of …

Epiphany Of The Throne-Chariot: Merkabah Mysticism And The Film Contact, Antonio Sison
Epiphany Of The Throne-Chariot: Merkabah Mysticism And The Film Contact, Antonio Sison
Journal of Religion & Film
I first review the features of Merkabah Mysticism emerging from the Jewish Hekhalot literature. I then get into an open-minded, creative exploration of what I see as cinematic allusions to Merkabah motifs in Contact through a consideration of thematic and stylistic patterns. I graft onto the scholarly efforts to bring out deeper aspects of meaning-making in film using the discursive framework provided by biblical theology.
A Study Of Yom Kippur With Special Attention To The Hebrew Root K-Ph-R And Its Old Testament Occurrences, Micah Houck
A Study Of Yom Kippur With Special Attention To The Hebrew Root K-Ph-R And Its Old Testament Occurrences, Micah Houck
Senior Honors Theses
Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement is a Jewish feast first given in Leviticus 16. While the concept of atonement in the Old Testament means, "to cover," this feast has not ceased in meaning. In fact, the Day of Atonement is relevant for today's society and is highly important for serious study by the biblical scholar as well as for personal devotion by any Christian. This feast reveals important details about the character of God as well as the nature of sin. It also is important because the New Testament itself makes a connection to the Day of Atonement …

Descendants Of Israel: Intimate Interactions Between The New Zealand Maori And The Mormon Missionaries
Mormon Pacific Historical Society
Since the first Maori to be taught the gospel from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the early 1880's, countless have become converted. Most of which were baptized only within the span of a few years of receiving the gospel. It is evident that the early Mormon missionaries clearly demonstrated a dramatic impact upon the indigenous tribes of Maori of New Zealand. However, what were the differentiating factors about Latter Day-Saint missionaries that set them apart from other missionaries, whom of which had already been in the country for roughly sixty-five years!? The course of this research …

Toward Better Hearing Of The Word In The Sermon, Darrell Zimmerman
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
The purpose of this project was to equip some members of the congregation to be discerning receivers of the sermon by improving their active and intentional listening capabilities. The methodology of the project included the development and teaching of a course of instruction on the theology and practice of preaching, a period of participant implementation, and interviews of participants in the study toward an evaluation of the project. Participant response showed a greater or lesser benefit depending on willingness and ability to apply the learnings. Recommendations for enhanced future effectiveness of the course are included.

This dissertation presents a chronological survey of the life and mission of Mabel Lossing Jones. Mabel was commissioned to India in 1904 by the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She served as a missionary at the Khandwa Girls' Orphanage, and later trained teachers at the Lai Bagh School in Lucknow, India. A Spirit Filled People-The Importance Of The Role And Work Of The Holy Spirit In The Converted Christian As Found In The Lutheran Confessions, The Book Of Concord, Sarah Arthur
Master of Art Theology Thesis
In this paper, we will take a closer look at just what it is that the Augsburg Confession and the Apology have to say about the importance of the role and work of Holy Spirit in the life of the converted Christian. We will first identify each occurrence and then organize the information in order to better understand what these two documents have to say about the work and role of the Holy Spirit.
Some topics were dealt with first for good reason. Luther's followers had first to defend their practices and doctrines before the Roman Catholic Church. There was …
History Of Research On The Book Of Micah Chapters 4-5, Jun Kim
History Of Research On The Book Of Micah Chapters 4-5, Jun Kim
Master of Art Theology Thesis
The primary approach of this study is to examine the history of the applicable research and to analyze the various methods (approaches). We have divided selected scholars into two categories (diachronic and synchronic) according to their methods. As we examine each method, this thesis will investigate the authors' treatment of the Hebrew text. Rigorous comparison is difficult, because scholars read some verses as a group, usually following the biblical order of the text, but they do not all group texts in the same way.
As previously stated, synchronic approaches are relatively new; therefore, in this category, fewer scholars will be …
Preaching In The 'Hear' And Now: Justification, Development, And Assessment Of 'Parabolic Engagement' Pedogogy In French-Speaking Missionary Settings, Daniel Sheard
Faculty Dissertations
This thesis argues the utility of ‘parabolic engagement’ method for preachers and listeners in the French Antillean context. The opening chapter defines key terms and clarifies how this imaged sermonic style addresses the listening habits of targeted audiences. It explains that figured delivery is often context-interpretive, involving a more personal, experiential decoding by the listener. Engagement technique increases auditor involvement and creates unique communicative rapport. The chapter points out that the entire experimental process validates the usefulness of the pedagogy. Part One addresses the theological rationale for ‘parabolic engagement’ method. Chapter Two reviews appropriate literature with respect to engagement. Chapter …
