A Bioarchaeological Investigation Of Two Unmarked Graveyards In Bridgetown, Barbados, Christopher Crain Aug 2005

A Bioarchaeological Investigation Of Two Unmarked Graveyards In Bridgetown, Barbados, Christopher Crain

Masters Theses

In 1996 and 1999 two previously unknown graveyards were discovered in separate sections of Bridgetown, Barbados. Emergency excavations of the sites recovered the skeletal material of at least thirty-two (MNI=32) individuals as well as a number of grave goods. While the artifacts were from the historical period there was continuing speculation as to the ancestry of the individuals interred within these graveyards. During the summer of 2004 the first preliminary osteological analysis of the skeletal material was conducted to identify the biological characteristics, including the ancestral affiliation, of these individuals. The analysis determined that the individuals interred at these sites …

At The Whim Of The State: Neoliberalism And Nongovernmental Organizations In Guerrero, Mexico, William Yaworsky Aug 2005

At The Whim Of The State: Neoliberalism And Nongovernmental Organizations In Guerrero, Mexico, William Yaworsky

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This paper examines the relationship between the Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (SEDESOL) and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in the Chilapa region of Guerrero, Mexico. I argue that the Mexican state via SEDESOL has effectively harnessed NGOs to perform as regional pillars of neoliberal reform initiatives. The intimacy of this relationship raises serious questions for those who see NGOs performing as vehicles for furthering local or regional "autonomy." Instead, I argue that regional NGOs are key role players in the deepening incorporation of communities into the global industrial economy.

Este artículo examina las relaciones entre la Secretaría de Desarrollo Social (SEDESOL) y …

A Semiotics View Of Modeling Method Complexity – The Case Of Uml, Keng Siau, Y. Tian Aug 2005

A Semiotics View Of Modeling Method Complexity – The Case Of Uml, Keng Siau, Y. Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Unified Modeling Language (UML) is the standard modeling language for object oriented system development. Despite its status as a standard, UML’s formal specification is fuzzy and its theoretical foundation is weak. Semiotics, the study of signs, provides us good theoretical foundation for UML research as UML graphical notations are some kinds of signs. In this research, we use semiotics to study the graphical notations in UML. We hypothesized that using iconic signs as UML graphical notations leads to more accurate representation and arouses fewer connotations than using symbolic signs. Since symbolic signs involve more learning efforts, we assume that expert …

Fictions Of The Gift: Generosity, Obligation, And Economy In Eighteenth-Century England, Cynthia J. Klekar Aug 2005

Fictions Of The Gift: Generosity, Obligation, And Economy In Eighteenth-Century England, Cynthia J. Klekar

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Fictions of the Gift: Generosity, Obligation and Economy in Eighteenth-Century English Literature examines the relationship between generosity, obligation, economy, and the gift in eighteenth-century English literature and culture. The central inquiry of the project investigates the paradoxical nature of the gift and ways in which the politics of a gift economy informed both practical and symbolic relations of domination in the period. Given the widespread nature of the language of the gift in the period, I concentrate on cultural texts and eighteenth-century novels to demonstrate the work of the gift within a number of eighteenth-century institutions, such as international trade, …

In-Group/Out-Group Dynamics Of Native American Mascot Endorsement, John Gonzalez Aug 2005

In-Group/Out-Group Dynamics Of Native American Mascot Endorsement, John Gonzalez

Theses and Dissertations

The use of Native American names and mascots by professional and college sports teams has become a controversial issue. However, very litde research has investigated attitudes towards Native Americans, regarding relationships between team names and mascots on prejudice and discrimination. This study proposed that the multiple social categories created by manipulating the endorsement/opposition of Native mascots by Native and White college students at a university with a Native mascot, would allow for the identification of possible prejudice and discrimination based on race and the mascot issue. It was hypothesized that the manipulation of Native American Mascot Endorsement (NAME) in Native …

Why The Federal Marriage Amendment Is Not Only Not Necessary, But A Bad Idea: A Response To Christopher Wolfe, Michael Perry Aug 2005

Why The Federal Marriage Amendment Is Not Only Not Necessary, But A Bad Idea: A Response To Christopher Wolfe, Michael Perry

San Diego Law Review

The Federal Marriage Amendment does more than prevent same-sex couples from having marital status. In response to Professor Wolfe, this article contends that the Federal Marriage Amendment prevents state courts and state legislatures from choosing to grant marital status to same-sex couples. Gender complimentarity, the heart of Professor Wolfe's argument and the Federal Marriage Amendment's basis, is too controversial and problematic to bind future generations from allowing same-sex marriage. Even if society is currently opposed to same-sex marriage, this author concludes that the U.S. Constitution should not be amended in a way that prevents future generations from deciding whether to …

Three Tensions And One Omission, In The Case For The Federal Marriage Amendment, Donald A. Dripps Aug 2005

Three Tensions And One Omission, In The Case For The Federal Marriage Amendment, Donald A. Dripps

San Diego Law Review

Sam-sex marriage is a hotly contested social issue. This Article responds to Professor Wolfe by analyzing three tensions that premise the case for the Federal Marriage Amendment. The first tension portrays marriage as both fragile and fundamental. However, the long-standing institution of marriage faces more serious challenges than same-sex marriage. Therefore, if social changes, violence, and disease have not weakened marriage, same-sex marriage likely will not do the institution any grave damage. The second tension claims that activist judges threaten traditional marriage, thus necessitating its definition in Federal Constitutional law. However, the new Federal Marriage Amendment will be left to …

Introduction: Human-Computer Interaction Studies In Management Information Systems, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, P. Zhang, S. Mccoy

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Human-computer interaction (HCI) is a critical area of research and practice that spans several disciplines, including industrial engineering, management information systems (MIS), computer science, information science, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. HCI research within the MIS discipline has distinct features shaped by the evolution and current state of MIS. Originating as applied computer science in the 1970s, MIS gradually transformed into a more social science–oriented discipline (Baskerville & Myers, 2002). MIS is broadly defined as “the effective design, delivery, and use of information systems in organizations” (Keen, 1980, p. 14). The two distinguishing features of MIS compared to other "homes" of …

Archaeology, Relics, And Book Of Mormon Belief, John E. Clark Jul 2005

Archaeology, Relics, And Book Of Mormon Belief, John E. Clark

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Archaeology has much to offer as a scientific means of gathering independent evidence of the Book of Mormon’s authenticity. But one must look in the right place. A cautionary tale is the failed Cluff expedition of 1900, which, assuming a “hemispheric model” of Book of Mormon geography, traveled from Provo as far as Colombia looking for the city Zarahemla. Yet in 1842 the Times and Seasons (under Joseph Smith’s editorship) had printed excerpts from a popular book on Mesoamerican archaeology that demonstrated a surprisingly high level of civilization, implying that Nephite lands did not extend into South America, thus supporting …

Looking For Artifacts At New York's Hill Cumorah, Journal Of Book Of Mormon Studies

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Landon Smith gives an account of artifact hunting in the fields surrounding Hill Cumorah, near Palmyra, New York. He presents evidence that the archaeology of New York does not support the idea that Book of Mormon peoples lived in that region of that New York's Hill Cumorah was the scene of the final battles between the Nephites and Lamanites.

A Vascular Plant Inventory And Description Of The Twelve Plant Community Types Found In The University Of South Florida Ecological Research Area, Hillsborough County, Florida, Anne Candace Schmidt

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The University of South Florida Ecological Research Area (USF Eco Area), located in west central Hillsborough County, is an approximately 306 hectare (756 acre) natural area on the Hillsborough River composed of twelve plant communities. While surrounded on three sides by urbanization, the USF Eco Area makes up the western most section of an extended natural corridor that runs approximately 88 kilometers (55 miles) east and north along the Hillsborough River. An inventory of the vascular flora and the associated ecological communities was developed to better assess the USF Eco Area for educational and research purposes as well as enhance …

Changes In The Perception And Sense Of Self Of Individuals With Aphasia: An Ethnographic Study, Erline Vieira Nakano Jul 2005

Changes In The Perception And Sense Of Self Of Individuals With Aphasia: An Ethnographic Study, Erline Vieira Nakano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about the perceived changes in identity and sense of self in individuals with aphasia. Seminal research using qualitative methods and personal narratives has been conducted in England regarding the experience of living with aphasia (see for instance Parr, Byng, Gilpin & Ireland, 1999; Parr, Duchan & Pound, 2003; Byng, Pound & Hewitt, 2004), but the use of such methodologies is still emergent in the United States. In addition, despite the great achievements of the disabilities movement in countries such as the U.S. and the U.K., individuals with aphasia have remained largely at the margins due to the …
