When Life Really Is A Stage: A Test Of Objectification Theory Using Dancers And Non-Dancers, Megan Duesterhaus Jan 2005

When Life Really Is A Stage: A Test Of Objectification Theory Using Dancers And Non-Dancers, Megan Duesterhaus

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study tested a model of objectification theory proposed by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997) as it applies to disordered eating in a sample of dancers and non-dancers. The methods in this study are based on a previous test of objectification theory done by Tiggeman and Slater (2001). Two samples of participants were given a survey to measure self-objectification and its anticipated consequences. The first sample included 155 women who participated in either ballet, modern, jazz, or hip-hop dance. The second sample included 199 women enrolled in undergraduate classes at the University of Central Florida during the fall semester of 2004. …

Limit Horizons & Critique: Seductions And Perils Of The Nation, Tayyab Mahmud Jan 2005

Limit Horizons & Critique: Seductions And Perils Of The Nation, Tayyab Mahmud

Faculty Articles

This essay introduces four contributions on nation and nationalism that form a cluster in the 2005 Annual Symposium of Latina/o Critical Legal Theory (LatCrit). It puts forward the concept of "limit horizons": the hegemonic ontological categories that so imprint the imaginary of an age the even critique remains imprisoned in the normalcy of these categories - an imprisonment that curtails the transformatory potential of critique. It is argued that the modern concept of the nation is such a limit horizon. Consequently, any critical engagement with the concept of the nation must concurrently be an exercise in self-critique to ensure that …

Walking While Muslim, Margaret Chon, Donna E. Arzt Jan 2005

Walking While Muslim, Margaret Chon, Donna E. Arzt

Faculty Articles

In the post-9/11 era, what exactly is meant by race? This essay claims that both domestic civil rights law and international human rights law simultaneously create and obscure racial identity increasingly constructed through Muslim religious identity. The argument unfolds in several parts. First, by analogy to the racial formation process that occurred with the Japanese American community after World War II, we argue that a group's religious identity can contribute to the perception of a group as a racially different and inferior "other." Second, among other elements, religious identity is under-analyzed as a key element of racial formation. Third, post-9/11 …

From Pluralism To Individualism: Berle And Means And 20th-Century American Legal Thought, Dalia Tsuk Mitchell Jan 2005

From Pluralism To Individualism: Berle And Means And 20th-Century American Legal Thought, Dalia Tsuk Mitchell

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This article is an intellectual history of Adolf A. Berle, Jr. and Gardiner C. Means, The Modern Corporation and Private Property (1932). I argue that Berle and Means's concern was not the separation of ownership from control in large pubic corporations, as many scholars have suggested, but rather the allocation of power between the state and a wide range of institutions. As I demonstrate, Berle and Means shared a legal pluralist vision of the modern state. Legal pluralism treated organizations as centers of power that had to be accommodated within the political and legal structure. Berle and Means viewed collective …

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly Jan 2005

Religion And Support Of Democracy: Protestantism, Catholicism, And The Support For Democracy In Mexico, Sara Jolly

Honors Theses

The findings are consistent with other recent studies in Latin America. Eric Patterson found a similar pattern in Argentina and Chile in his study in 2003 (Patterson 2003). The data shows that despite Mexico’s history ofstrained Church/ State relations and a 70-year authoritarian rule, the Protestants in Mexico tend to hold similar beliefs on the support for democracy as the Protestants of other Latin American countries.

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin Jan 2005

The Value Of An Arts Rich Education: Why Every School Should Teach The Arts, Holly Louise Buntin

Honors Theses

This thesis aims to prove that the arts should be a major component in every student’s education. Statistics, research findings, and case studies from throughout the years were compared and compiled together in order to make a strong argument in favor of the arts. The National Art Education Association website provided many statistics as did the National Center for Education Statistics. Two of the specific studies presented in this thesis came from Champions of Change, a collection of seven major studies done by professional academics. It was produced by the Arts Education Partnership, the President’s Committee on the Arts and …

War Or Peace: It’S Time To Ratify The 1954 Hague Convention For The Protection Of Cultural Property In The Event Of Armed Conflicts, Juli Campagna

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

It is time for the United States to reaffirm its recognition of the equal rights of all world people to their cultural inheritance. Our reputation depends on it.

In this Article, I will first discuss the rampant looting and destruction of civilization's cultural property occurring in Iraq since the American-led occupation. The U.S. Department of Defenses's response to this violation of international law is: "stuff happens." In arguing that the United States must ratify and adhere to the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, I then will consider the historical development …

Rhetoric, Divorce And International Human Rights: The Limits Of Divorce Reform For The Protection Of Children, Barbara Stark Jan 2005

Rhetoric, Divorce And International Human Rights: The Limits Of Divorce Reform For The Protection Of Children, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This paper, written for a Symposium, identifies and challenges three premises contained in the Symposium's title, "Divorce Reform for the Protection of Children." First, it tacitly assumes that divorce reform can protect "children" in general, rather than a relatively small, and quite demographically distinct, population of children in particular. Second, it assumes that divorce itself poses a danger to these children. Third, it assumes that the law should step in to avert, or at least manage that danger. This paper interrogates each of these propositions. My project may strike some as painfully obvious. Of course there are bigger, broader threats …

Method, Mediations, And The Moral Dimensions Of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2005

Method, Mediations, And The Moral Dimensions Of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This essay describes an approach to moral conundrums (such as those occasioned by reproductive technology, including preimplantation genetic diagnosis) in a heterogeneous society. The approach, referred to as "mediative," is designed to clarify aspects of the process of moral contemplation. It does not aim to secure any particular sort of resolution or conclusion. In this sense, the approach is not exclusively committed to any particular religious or philosophical perspective regarding bioethical questions and can most felicitously accommodate many of them.

The approach reflects an anthropological apperception: the effort to understand the Other (the stranger, the outsider, the foreigner) depends on …

Divination Bowls And Blood Simulacra In Colonial And Contemporary Mesoamerican Curing, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jan 2005

Divination Bowls And Blood Simulacra In Colonial And Contemporary Mesoamerican Curing, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

This study discusses 17th century Nahua practices of water divination in light of contemporary types of bowl divination practiced by Kaqchikel Mayas of Guatemala. The author argues that part of the efficacy of bowl divination among Kaqchikels, and possibly among Nahuas, rests upon the transformation of the water used into a simulacrum of blood. The creation and subsequent manipulation of this simulacrum enables the ritualist to effectuate key changes to the client's state of blood and, by extension, to the client's state of spirit.

The European Union, Immigration And Inequality: “Albanian” Labor In The Political Economy Of Rural Greece, Christopher M. Lawrence Jan 2005

The European Union, Immigration And Inequality: “Albanian” Labor In The Political Economy Of Rural Greece, Christopher M. Lawrence

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Many early studies of globalization hypothesized a withering away of thee nation-state as a significant arena for the production of identity and social regulation. From this perspective the persistence of nationalism and resurgence of neo-racism in Europe have often been seen as a futile rear-guard defense by downwardly mobile classes or class fractions. More recent studies have suggested that rather than fading away, the nation and state have been undergoing a process of re-articulation. However, exactly how the nation and state are being re-articulated, and the implications of this process for our understanding of nationalism and national identity formation, are …

Wendell Berry's Sociological Imagination: Agrarian Values And Good Leadership In A Postmodern Culture, Paul Alan Kaak Jan 2005

Wendell Berry's Sociological Imagination: Agrarian Values And Good Leadership In A Postmodern Culture, Paul Alan Kaak

Dissertations

Problem. The question guiding my dissertation research was: In what ways do the writings of Wendell Berry, reflecting his sociological imagination, address and advance leadership theory with specific regard for the issue of agrarian values?

Method. I used the writings of Wendell Berry as a modified case study for my inductive, theoretical, exploratory research in a qualitative vein. As I reviewed his writings, I identified his moral ideology and extracted his value-set. Along the way, I observed Berry's use of a method promoted by C. Wright Mills in his book The Sociological Imagination (1959). Since sociological imagination finds …

The Nature, Function, And Purpose Of The Term Sheol In The Torah, Prophets, And Writings, Eriks Galenieks Jan 2005

The Nature, Function, And Purpose Of The Term Sheol In The Torah, Prophets, And Writings, Eriks Galenieks

Dissertations

The fact that scholars depict Sheol either as the underworld where the dead continue their existence or simply the grave has resulted in contradictory conclusions, fierce polemic, and unremitting disputes. This lack of consensus makes it imperative to justify another approach, which is more comprehensive in its entirety in comparison with the earlier attempts that sought to determine the meaning of the term Sheol mainly by exploring its etymology and various nonbiblical sources.

Unlike the previous studies, this exegetical research systematically examines all the sixty-six references to the term Sheol in the Hebrew Bible by almost exclusively focusing on its …
