Louis Owens, Linda Lizut Helstern Jan 2005

Louis Owens, Linda Lizut Helstern

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

“'I prefer infinitions to definitions,’” Alex Yazzie, the cross-dressing Navajo anthropologist in Louis Owens’ Bone Game, declares (46). So did Louis Owens. In his life, in his death, and above all in his writing, Louis Owens (1948-2002), novelist, essayist, literary and cultural critic, crossed boundaries and refused definitions. Born in Lompoc, California, Owens came to understand the arid landscape of the west through the lens of his early childhood in the Yazoo bottoms of Mississippi. He was a Native mixedblood who acknowledged not only his multi-tribal heritage, Choctaw on his father's side and Cherokee on his mother’s, but the …

Rockshelters, Rock Art And Grinding Activity In The Picket Wire Canyonlands, Ralph J. Hartley, Anne M. Wolley Vawser Jan 2005

Rockshelters, Rock Art And Grinding Activity In The Picket Wire Canyonlands, Ralph J. Hartley, Anne M. Wolley Vawser

United States National Park Service: Publications

Rockshelters and caves used by prehistoric people have fascinated archaeologists and the general public for many years. Such sheltered locations often contain a wide range of perishable remains as well as intact geological and cultural deposits that make them particularly significant loci for archeological investigation. Rockshelters, caves, and alcoves are often assumed to have served as important locations within past land-use systems. It is the topographic situation, distribution, and domestic activity in proximity to rockshelters along the Purgatoire River in southeast Colorado that is the focus of this paper.

The Purgatoire River flows northeast to the Arkansas River through an …

Methodological Decisions In Context: The Dilemmas And Challenges Of Novice African Scholars, Justin Lupele, Mweru Mwingi, Felistus Kinyanjui, Christine Kisamba, Joyce Kimani

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This paper emerges out of a panel discussion during a PhD week and subsequent 8th International Environmental Education Invitation Seminar held at Rhodes University in 2004 and 2005 respectively.

It illuminates some insights into our struggles (as novice African researchers) in trying to respond to contextual realities as we research education and social change in African contexts, seeking insight into what counts as legitimate research in this context.

The paper considers our struggles at conceptual, methodological, analytical and data generation levels, and in a politics of research. This is done by means of examples drawn from five current doctoral research …

Discordant Harmonies In Fingernail Clam Populations (Musculium Transversum) Of Mississippi River Backwater Lakes, Jim Eckblad Jan 2005

Discordant Harmonies In Fingernail Clam Populations (Musculium Transversum) Of Mississippi River Backwater Lakes, Jim Eckblad

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The populations of Musculium transversum from 8 backwater lakes have been studied over a 29-year period based upon over 440 grab samples. These lakes in Navigation Pool 9 of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) range in size from 2 to 255 hectare surface area, mean depths from 0.2 to 0.9 meters, with mean water exchange times from 0.5 to almost 57 hours. Samples from the 1989-91 period suggested summer Muscu!ium populations had declined to about 9 percent of their mid-1970 levels. Deterministic models have attempted to explain this decline. More recent sampling suggests a substantial recovery of Musculium populations (mid-summer …

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard Jan 2005

Threatened By Industry, Saved By Science: Mussel Propagation At The Fairport Biological Laboratory, James Pritchard

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

During the 1890s, people on the Mississippi River exploited mussel populations to support a thriving button industry. Within a brief time, they noticed significant declines in mussel populations, and called on the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries to save the resource. This paper discusses mussel propagation studies, techniques, and activities carried on in association with the Fairport Biological Laboratory (Iowa) from about 1908 to 1932. While scientists developed sophisticated techniques and had success in mussel propagation, changing habitat conditions in the river (caused mainly by pollution and dam construction) meant limited success in rescuing mussel stocks, while the introduction of plastic …

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne Jan 2005

Women In Science: Biological Factors Should Not Be Ignored, Kingsley R. Browne

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that biological and psychological differences between sexes contribute to the underrepresentation of women in certain fields, challenging the assumption that equal representation is always the appropriate goal. It critiques the notion that disparities necessarily indicate systemic flaws, emphasizing that freedom of choice should allow for different occupational outcomes without implying discrimination.

Mediation And Justice: What Standards Govern?, Joseph B. Stulberg Jan 2005

Mediation And Justice: What Standards Govern?, Joseph B. Stulberg

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

I find it challenging to write about mediation and justice for several perplexing reasons. The concept of justice is constitutionally ambiguous; trying to analyze it concretely is a challenging task for both writer and reader. Despite the concept's ambiguity, however, each of us can readily describe situations that instantly appall us for reasons that we intuitively identify as constituting acts or occasions of injustice. The irony then, and hence the challenge, is that we know that the concept of justice is an important phenomenon to address, yet we have difficulty saying something constructive or useful about it.

Occasions And Motivations For Gift-Giving: A Comparative Study Of Malay And Chinese Consumers In Urban Malaysia, Md Nor Othman, Fon Sim Ong, Anna T.M. Teng Jan 2005

Occasions And Motivations For Gift-Giving: A Comparative Study Of Malay And Chinese Consumers In Urban Malaysia, Md Nor Othman, Fon Sim Ong, Anna T.M. Teng

Research Publications (2000 to 2005)

The main purpose of this study is to examine the occasions and motivations for gift-giving behaviour amongst urban Malaysian consumers. In addition, a comparison between the gift-giving behaviours of the two major ethnic groups in Malaysia, namely the Malays and the Chinese, will be made. The study utilized the survey approach. The sample consisted of 300 respondents. Findings showed that most of the respondents buy gifts during birthdays and weddings. When the motivations of gift giving were examined, the study found that the most preferred motivation for gift giving is for practical purposes. Comparing the behaviour of the two ethnic …

Intimacy And Economic Exchange, Jill Elaine Hasday Jan 2005

Intimacy And Economic Exchange, Jill Elaine Hasday

Articles

The current legal debate about the regulation of economic exchange between intimates mistakenly assumes that the law does not countenance such exchange to any notable extent. This assumption is so widely held that it unites otherwise disparate anticommodification and pro-market scholars. Both groups agree that the law maintains a strict boundary between economic exchange and intimacy, and disagree only on whether to applaud or criticize that boundary. Both overlook or underemphasize the degree to which the law already permits economic exchange within intimate relationships. The current debate's focus on whether the law should enforce economic exchanges between intimates misses at …

Property Mosaic And State-Making: Governmentality, Expropriation And Conservation In The Pyrenees, Ismael Vaccaro Jan 2005

Property Mosaic And State-Making: Governmentality, Expropriation And Conservation In The Pyrenees, Ismael Vaccaro

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This article identifies the current explosion of conservation policies in the Pyrenees as the most recent wave of a long-standing tradition of state-driven territorial policies. The very existence of these policies cannot be understood without taking into account the consequences of two hundred years of territorial rationalization, land expropriation and natural resource control. Depopulation, agricultural involution and forest recovery are partial consequences, not necessarily intended, of the expansion of the modern Spanish state. In addition to identifying a similar ideological background for the four phases of the model presented here (municipalization, disentailment, expropriation and parks implementation), I also argue that …

Migration And Home Gardens In The Brahmaputra Valley, Assam, India, Rahul J. Shrivastava, Joel T. Heinen Jan 2005

Migration And Home Gardens In The Brahmaputra Valley, Assam, India, Rahul J. Shrivastava, Joel T. Heinen

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

The Brahmaputra is the largest river system in northeast India. Its valley, in the State of Assam, is home to the Assamese people, indigenous Mishing and Karbi tribes, and Kaziranga National Park. A spectacular array of wildlife shares the floodplain including the endangered Asian elephant, tiger, one-horned rhinoceros and wild buffalo. The fertile floodplain and tea estates have attracted immigrants from within India and from neighboring countries. Migration has been linked to Assam's high population density and agriculture expansion. Based on household surveys in 37 villages in the park's periphery, we compared home garden productivity and economic return among residents …

Weaving Traditional Ecological Knowledge Into The Restoration Of Basketry Plants, Daniela Shebitz Jan 2005

Weaving Traditional Ecological Knowledge Into The Restoration Of Basketry Plants, Daniela Shebitz

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper focuses on the benefits of incorporating traditional ecological knowledge into the field of ecological restoration. Case studies on indigenous use of sweetgrass in New York State, U.S.A (Haudenosaunee Nation), and beargrass in Washington State, U.S.A (Quinault and Skokomish Nations), are presented. Both studies focus on the restoration of basketry plants by incorporating indigenous knowledge of changes in abundance of culturally significant plants; knowledge of sites appropriate for restoration of culturally significant plants; and knowledge of land management methods to restore species and/or habitats. Open-ended, semi-formal, and informal interviews were conducted with indigenous consultants familiar with the plant and/or …

Machines And Machinations: The Integrated Care Record Service In The Uk National Health Service, Reshma Ramesh Gandecha, Christopher Atkinson, Anastasia Papazafeiropoulou, Lampros Stergioulas

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

This paper examines the use of Actor Network Theory (ANT) as a lens to get a better understanding of the implementation of the Integrated Care Record Service (ICRS) in the UK National Health Service (NHS). Actor Network Theory has been deployed in various environments to achieve a better understanding of the roles of not only the humans but also the artifacts that constitute, in this case, healthcare networks of services and organisations. The theory is used as a means of supporting real world interventions, providing a richer understanding of complexities involved and thereby helps management to make better decisions. This …
