Pulpits And Platforms: The Role Of The Church In Determining Protest Among Black Americans, Scott T. Fitzgerald, Ryan Spohn Jan 2005

Pulpits And Platforms: The Role Of The Church In Determining Protest Among Black Americans, Scott T. Fitzgerald, Ryan Spohn

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

This article further specifies the relationship between church-based resources, group identification and political activism among black Americans. Previous research indicates that political communication within churches and activism within the church serve to motivate political participation. Our research suggests that, net of relevant controls, activism within the church does not significantly increase protest politics. A key determinant of protest participation is attending a church that exhibits a politicized church culture, and this effect is contingent upon educational attainment and membership in secular organizations. Hence, the church serves as a crucial context for the dissemination of political messages and exposure to opportunities …

Late 19th- And Early 20th-Century Manufacture Of Drawn Glass Tubing For Glass Beads, Lester A. Ross Jan 2005

Late 19th- And Early 20th-Century Manufacture Of Drawn Glass Tubing For Glass Beads, Lester A. Ross

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

Late 19th- and early 20th-century archaeological sites often contain machine-made drawn glass beads with unique shapes and perforations. Little information exists documenting when these beads were initially manufactured. Through an examination of hundreds of U.S. patents, it appears that the mechanized production of drawn beads could have occurred as early as the late 19th-century, but more likely, they were not mass produced until the end of World War I, after the invention of the Danner process for mechanically drawing glass tubing. Machine-made drawn beads with multiple sides and/or shaped perforations also appear to have been produced by the late-19th century, …

Consent, Informal Organization, And Job Rewards: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Marty Laubach Jan 2005

Consent, Informal Organization, And Job Rewards: A Mixed Methods Analysis, Marty Laubach

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research

This study uses a mixed methods approach to workplace dynamics. Ethnographic observations show that the consent deal underlies an informal stratification that divides the workplace into an “informal periphery,” a “conventional core,” and an “administrative clan.” The “consent deal” is defined as an exchange of autonomy, voice, and schedule flexibility for intensified commitment, and is modeled as a single factor underlying these elements. When constructed as an additive scale, consent allows informal organization to be included in workplace models. Despite its derivation from subjective and informal processes, informal structure exerts an independent effect on objective job rewards such as wages.

A Study Of Somali Women In The Secular Work Setting, Maria R. Morland Jan 2005

A Study Of Somali Women In The Secular Work Setting, Maria R. Morland

Theses and Graduate Projects

This research study gives an overview of Somali culture and religion, and immigration to Minnesota. The study is based on quantitative research and qualitative data from interviews with five Somali Muslim women (aged 20-39) in the secular work setting. The study was conducted to learn about the experience of Somali women in the workplace relative to their religious practices. The women expressed some alienation but not discrimination in the workplace. This study provides valuable information for leaders and employers who employ Somalis. If the leadership of an organization has knowledge of the typical conflicts that might occur with Somalis in …

The Politics Of Forbidden Liaisons: Civilization, Miscegenation, And Other Perversions, Stefanie Wickstrom Jan 2005

The Politics Of Forbidden Liaisons: Civilization, Miscegenation, And Other Perversions, Stefanie Wickstrom

Political Science Faculty Scholarship

The author traces the evolving politics of sexuality in North America and its connections to the expropriation of resources from oppressed populations in what has become the United States of America. To help illustrate the evolution of the politics of sexuality over time, the author interprets messages emanating from Sigmund Freud's Civilization and Its Discontents (1930) and Herbert Marcuse's Eros and Civilization (first published in 1955), One-Dimensional Man (1964), and An Essay on Liberation (1969). The author offers a comparative interpretation of literary portrayals of forbidden heterosexual liaisons between American Indian men and Anglo women and erotic lesbian liaisons between …

Multiple Identities, Citizenship Rights And Democratization In Africa, 'Lai Olurode Jan 2005

Multiple Identities, Citizenship Rights And Democratization In Africa, 'Lai Olurode

Ethnic Studies Review

This particularistic and exclusionary form of identity politics has intensified in recent years within and among nations..... It is responsible for some of the most egregious violations of international humanitarian law and, in several instances, of elementary standards of humanity.... Negative forms of identity politics are a potent and potentially explosive force. Great care must be taken to recognise, confront and restrain them lest they destroy the potential for peace and progress that the new era holds in store (Kofi Annan, The Guardian, (Nigeria) 1997:8).

Review Of Roger Ames And David Hall, Daodejing: Making This Life Significant: A Philosophical Translation, Alan Kam Leung Chan Jan 2005

Review Of Roger Ames And David Hall, Daodejing: Making This Life Significant: A Philosophical Translation, Alan Kam Leung Chan

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

Is there a need for another translation of the Laozi Daodejing? Although there are already over 100 translations in English alone, this present effort by Ames and Hall marks a welcome addition, in that it offers an engaging philosophical account of the Daodejing as chiefly concerned with “making this life significant.”
