A Bioarchaeological Analysis Of Burials At The Weaver Site, Illinois, Nicholas E. Lonergan Jan 2005

A Bioarchaeological Analysis Of Burials At The Weaver Site, Illinois, Nicholas E. Lonergan

Honors Capstones

A collection of skeletal material from the Weaver Site in Fulton County, Illinois, was examined to establish the composition and general health status of a sample of a prehistoric Native American population. The sample consisted of 34 individuals from three cultural periods: the Hopewell, Weaver, and Spoon River Mississippian. Individuals were evaluated for sex, age, stature, and dental wear. The presence of pathological conditions as indicated by skeletal markers was recorded. The markers assessed were cribra orbitalia and porotic hyperostosis, periosteal infection, enamel hypoplasias, and dental caries, which are used to ascertain the nutritional and disease stress of a population. …

Cultural Competence: Myth Or Mandate, Ida Spruill, Bertha L. Davis Jan 2005

Cultural Competence: Myth Or Mandate, Ida Spruill, Bertha L. Davis

Journal of Health Ethics

The ability to provide effective, quality health care to clients from different cultures is becoming increasingly important to health care providers from all disciplines (Davidhizar, Bechtal, & Gregory, 1998). The United States census reported that by the year 2000, one third of Americans would be members of an ethnically diverse cultural group. The developmental process of the cultural competency continuum is often misunderstood and/or left out of many cultural competency and sensitivity training programs, resulting in the inadequate preparation of trained health professionals. When organizational systems and/or professionals strive to become culturally competent, they must first perform an assessment of …

Thirteen-Hundred-Year-Old Bead Adornments From Baar, Canton Zug, Switzerland, Katharina Müller Jan 2005

Thirteen-Hundred-Year-Old Bead Adornments From Baar, Canton Zug, Switzerland, Katharina Müller

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

In the year 2000, an Early Medieval (7th-century) cemetery containing more than 200 burials with rich grave goods was discovered in Baar, Canton Zug, Switzerland. Thanks to the painstaking methods used in the excavation and recording of the 2,985 glass, amber, coral, and amethyst beads found with the female burials, it was possible to reconstruct the necklaces and sewn-on appliqués they were part of. Comparisons with mosaic depictions of famous women—such as the Empress Theodora in San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy—suggest that the people of Baar imitated southern Alpine Byzantine bead jewelry fashion.

A Fluted Point From Nipomo, San Luis Obispo County, California, Wayne W. Millis, Michael F. Rondeau, Terry L. Jones Jan 2005

A Fluted Point From Nipomo, San Luis Obispo County, California, Wayne W. Millis, Michael F. Rondeau, Terry L. Jones

Social Sciences

An isolated fluted projectile point found in Nipomo (San Luis Obispo County, California) about 30 years ago was recently brought to the attention of the local archaeological community. Made from Monterey chert, the specimen exhibits single flute scars that extend about three quarters of the way up both faces, although it also shows clear evidence of blade and basal reworking. Attributes typical of fluted point technology—including heavy edge grinding/polishing on the lateral edge margins of the base, and a bi-concave basal cross-section—support a Paleoindian origin for the artifact.
