Communicating Culture Through Capoeira, Desislava Georgieva Jan 2005

Communicating Culture Through Capoeira, Desislava Georgieva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The popularity of capoeira, a dance based in the martial arts and originating among slaves in Sixteenth-Century Brazil, has increased greatly in recent decades as it has spread worldwide as a performance representative of Brazilian history and culture. In 1974, capoeira was declared the national sport of Brazil. Today capoeira academies and competitions may be found wherever Brazilian culture is celebrated and communicated in many major foreign cities. My thesis, through the participant/observer method and the use of long interviews, examines capoeira as it is practiced in one particular academy far from the art form's place of origin. In the …

Apology And Medical Mistake: Opportunity Or Foil?, Lee Taft Jan 2005

Apology And Medical Mistake: Opportunity Or Foil?, Lee Taft

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

An innovative examination of the true nature of apology and its ameliorative properties, this article discusses the difficult situations arising in the wake of medical error. An interesting blend of psychology, sociology, and jurisprudence, the author responds to one physician's account of his tragic error, and offers evidence suggesting that the incidence of medical malpractice litigation may be diminished by physicians and hospitals taking responsibility and apologizing for their mistakes.

Democratic Development And The Role Of Citizenship Education In Sub-Saharan African With A Case Focus On Zambia, Ali A. Abdi, Lee Ellis, Edward Shizha

Youth and Children's Studies

In addressing issues related to problems of democratisation in Africa, this paper attempts to relate the issue to the need for citizenship education and the role that can play in social development. Citizenship should be central to the formation of viable civil societies that claim a tangible stake in national public spaces in post-Cold War Africa. These and related topics are discussed relative to new possibilities that could lead to the full realisation of the concept as well as the practice of enfranchised citizenship and inclusive social development in aspiring democracies in the Sub Saharan African context. The complexity of …

Walking Streets, Talking History: The Making Of Odessa, Tanya Richardson Jan 2005

Walking Streets, Talking History: The Making Of Odessa, Tanya Richardson

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Through walking streets and talking history, the members of the My Odessa club sense their city as place. History is encountered in buildings, ruins, monuments, and stories as both a diffuse feeling and a dialogic process. The walkers’ practice of exploring nooks and crannies of the city and speaking with local residents is informed by a “large family” form of sociality, and a notion of Odessa as courtyard where space is conceived as commercial. In walking the city, participants subvert and recreate aspects of Soviet and post-Soviet urban space and generate a sense of their city as distinct from a …

Can University/Community Collaboration Create Spaces For Aboriginal Reconciliation? Case Study Of The Healing Of The Seven Generations And Four Directions Community Projects And Wilfrid Laurier University, Ginette Lafrenière, Lamine Diallo, Donna Dubie, Lou Henry

Business Technology Management

In this article, the authors attempt to illustrate how two Aboriginal community-based projects were conceptualized and developed through the collaborative efforts of four individuals who believed in the merits of a project aimed at survivors and intergenerational survivors of the residential school system as well as Aboriginal people in trouble with the law. Drawing upon a small body of literature on university/community collaboration, the authors illustrate the importance of meaningful collaboration between universities and communities in order to enhance a mutually beneficial relationship conducive to community-engaged scholarship. Through an examination of the case study of the Healing of The Seven …

The Obedience Of Faith: Barth, Bultmann And Dei Verbum, Daniel Gallagher Jan 2005

The Obedience Of Faith: Barth, Bultmann And Dei Verbum, Daniel Gallagher

Journal for Christian Theological Research

The Catholic formulation of "faith" as expressed in Dei Verbum owes much to the influence of Protestant theologians such as Karl Barth and Rudolf Bultmann. Dei Verbum offers the Pauline phrase "obedience of faith" (Romans 1:5 and 16:26) as constitutive for understanding the relationship between the believer and the God who reveals himself in Jesus Christ. This essay examines the obediential dynamic of faith as developed in the exegetical, theological, and ethical work of Barth and Bultmann, demonstrating how the biblical and personalist dimensions of faith implicit in paragraph 5 of Dei Verbum, to a large degree, find their inspiration …

In this article, the authors investigate key aspects of a 2-year study of mentoring within a reform-based teacher development project, explore the various mentor relationships, and theorize about key events, tensions, and dynamics that resulted in an unexpected sense of community among project stakeholders as a direct result of mentoring. Data for this article describe the impact of teacher mentoring within the Assessment Initiative for Middle School Physical Education (AIMS-PE) project. AIMS-PE was a multi-year Center for Disease Control grant funded project with goals including assisting in-service teachers to examine and reframe their assessment practices and to increase their students. …
