Constructed Illness In An Egyptian Neighborhood: The Cases Of Al Daght And Al Sukar, Caren Diane Craigo El Gabry
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This thesis seeks to address the diverging constructs of illness that lie within the Egyptian context. The illnesses of al daght (hypertension) and al sukar (Type II, diabetes mellitus) are examined in reference to how local constructs of illness in an Egyptian neighborhood differ from the constructs of the predominate medical system operating in Egypt, that of the biomedical model. The thesis begins with examining the basis of divergence and by looking at the historical and cultural properties of the medical systems that have existed in parts of the "East" and the "West". A discussion of how illnesses are perceived, …
The Self-Perceived Identities Of Six English Teachers At One Islamic Language School In Cairo, Rama Ma Abdelaziz Ghazi
The Self-Perceived Identities Of Six English Teachers At One Islamic Language School In Cairo, Rama Ma Abdelaziz Ghazi
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Since the 1970s Egyptian society has witnessed a wave of Islamism. This tern1 refers to a surge of religious revivalism based on the precepts of Islam. This religious resurgence has been reflected and manifested in the increase in the emergence of a type of schooling knm\n as Islamic schools. Such schools aim at implementing certain goals and standards which are in-line with their ideology, in this case Islamic. The teacher is an access point between the school's administration, the Ministry of Education and the student. He or she acts as a mediator between the school (as a system, structure) and …
Gender, Citizenship And Personal Status Laws: Egypt & Morocco Compared, Yvette Fayez Isaac
Gender, Citizenship And Personal Status Laws: Egypt & Morocco Compared, Yvette Fayez Isaac
Archived Theses and Dissertations
This research puts forward the argument that the state can utilize, negotiate and transform laws according to the different forces it faces and that this has its implications on citizenship rights for women. The study accomplishes this by comparing Egypt and Morocco, two Arab [and North African] countries that have undergone recent changes in their personal status laws (also called family laws). Methodologically speaking, this is achieved through examining the impact of the rising pressure of women's groups and local NGOs to challenge the rising Islamic activism (internal factors), and the impact of globalization, and international conventions and organizations (external …

Young Women Smoking Shisha In Greater Cairo: A Social Study, Shahinaz M Khalil
Archived Theses and Dissertations

Poverty, Gender, And Religion: A Reflection On The Status Of Coptic Women In Poor Areas, Ereeny Talaat Zaki
Poverty, Gender, And Religion: A Reflection On The Status Of Coptic Women In Poor Areas, Ereeny Talaat Zaki
Archived Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis is to explore the reasons behind the oppression of poor Coptic women. It examines the factors that position Coptic women in inferior status. It analyzes these factors at the intersections of lack of resources, poverty consequences, and gender inequalities that shape life experiences of this segment of the Egyptian society. Central to my argument is the influence of religion on the lives of those women. In the light of fieldwork conducted in the poor area of El Salaam city, the main finding is that religion affiliation, especially if this religion is adopted by a minority …

Who's Your Daddy?: Challenging The Application Of The Best Interest Of The Child Standard To Adults And In The Context Of An Intestate Estate, Tyler E. Heffron
Who's Your Daddy?: Challenging The Application Of The Best Interest Of The Child Standard To Adults And In The Context Of An Intestate Estate, Tyler E. Heffron
ExpressO
This article includes a discussion of (1) whether the best interest of the child standard should apply to an adult, (2) whether the best interest of the child standard should apply in the context of an intestate estate, and (3) whether the Kansas Probate Code should defer heirship challenges to the Kansas Parentage Act. The article, following case law from New Mexico and statutes from Georgia, concludes that the best interest of the child standard should not apply to an adult or in the context of an intestate estate. The article proposes an amendment to the Kansas Probate Code.

Characterizing A First Occurrence Of Bison Deposits In Southeastern Nevada, William Gray Johnson, Saxon E. Sharpe, Thomas F. Bullard, Karen Lupo
Western North American Naturalist
Late Holocene bison bones eroding from the badlands topography of Cathedral Gorge State Park in southeastern Nevada have been identified as the remains of Bison and date between approximately 400 and 850 years old. The bones were originally thought to be turn-of-the-century cattle and then early bison, so park personnel had need to solve this interpretive problem. A multidisciplinary team sought information on archaeology, geomorphology, paleontology, and paleoenvironment to document the 1st established occurrence of bison in this part of Nevada and to develop a hypothesis explaining their demise.
