Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin
Reasonable Partiality And Animal Ethics, Bernard E. Rollin
Attitudes Towards Animals Collection
Moral psychology is often ignored in ethical theory, making applied ethics difficult to achieve in practice. This is particularly true in the new field of animal ethics. One key feature of moral psychology is recognition of the moral primacy of those with whom we enjoy relationships of love and friendship -philia in Aristotle's term. Although a radically new ethic for animal treatment is emerging in society, its full expression is severely limited by our exploitative uses of animals. At this historical moment, only the animals with whom we enjoy philia - companion animals - can be treated with unrestricted moral …

Profile: Becoming--Stories Of Discovery And Growth, University Relations
Profile (1996-)
Colleges, too, have opportunities to define and move into their futures, although rarely as dramatically as first year students. As this issue of Profile documents, this is such a moment for UMM. Physically, our campus has changed remarkably in the past few years, and will be continuing to develop in the next few, as we complete the Social Science renovation project, the biomass heating/cooling plant and the new athletic field. Two areas covered in the pages that follow represent particularly exciting and dramatic moves for our college into its future.

Mom's Day Out: Investigating The Proximate Causes Of Allomothering In Squirrel Monkeys, Amber Wright
Mom's Day Out: Investigating The Proximate Causes Of Allomothering In Squirrel Monkeys, Amber Wright
Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses
Allomothering, which is defined as non-material infant care, is a behavior that is found among many animal species. Although it is widely acknowledged in primate species in particular, it is not well understood. Allomaternal behavior is well documented but the proximal causes are not known. Most primate species live in groups and have intense social relations which govern every aspect of their behavior. Allomothering could then be better understood by looking at the social relationships that exist between members of a group. This research tries to better understand what causes certain females to allomother over others by looking at the …
K’Oando: La Mesa Urbana En Cochabamba, Erin Hatheway
K’Oando: La Mesa Urbana En Cochabamba, Erin Hatheway
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll
The Struggle For Music Copyright, Michael W. Carroll
Working Paper Series
Inspired by passionate contemporary debates about music copyright, this Article investigates how, when, and why music first came within copyright's domain. Ironically, although music publishers and recording companies are among the most aggressive advocates for strong copyright in music today, music publishers in eighteenth-century England resisted extending copyright to music. This Article sheds light on a series of early legal disputes concerning printed music that yield important insights into original understandings of copyright law and music's role in society. By focusing attention on this understudied episode, this Article demonstrates that the concept of copyright was originally far more circumscribed than …
Utility, The Good And Civic Happiness: A Catholic Critique Of Law And Economics, Mark A. Sargent
Utility, The Good And Civic Happiness: A Catholic Critique Of Law And Economics, Mark A. Sargent
Working Paper Series
This paper contrasts the value maximization norm of welfare economics that is central to law and economics in its prescriptive mode to the Aristotelian/Aquinian principles of Catholic social thought. The reluctance (or inability) of welfare economics and law and economics to make judgments about about utilities (or preferences) differs profoundly from the Catholic tradition (rooted in Aristotle as well as religious faith) of contemplation of the nature of the good. This paper also critiques the interesting argument by Stephen Bainbridge that homo economicus bears a certain affinity to fallen man, and that law and economics thus provides appropriate rules for …

Collaborative Storybook Reading: Bring Parents And At-Risk Kindergarten Students Together, Linda Smetana
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Many students lack early literacy skills because they have not had opportunities to listen to or talk about stories, engage in word play, read with family members, or view literacy behaviors modeled in the home. The Collaborative Storybook Reading Program presents a model for providing interactive reading experiences for at-risk kindergarten students through the use of parent volunteers. The program was designed to increase student interactions with literature, while at the same time increasing the confidence level and literacy skills of the parent-volunteer readers. Program participants demonstrated increased ability to retell stories and participate in whole-class storybook reading sessions.

Readings In Place: Recent Publications In Southwestern Literature And Studies, Thomas Lynch
Department of English: Faculty Publications
The "Southwest" is nearly always defined along the intersection of two axes, one cultural and the other natural. Certain characteristics of these two axes are obvious in the six works considered here. Culturally, the region is most distinguished from the rest of the US by the existence of two enduring ethnic communities, the indigenous and the Hispanic, with the presence of the Mexican border exerting a powerful influence. In very different ways, Molly H. Mullin’s Culture in the Market Place: Gender, Art, and Value in the American Southwest, Audrey Goodman’s Translating Southwestern Landscapes: The Making of an Anglo Literary …

El Árbol De La Vida: El Mito De Wuanámei De La Comunidad Nativa Huachipaeri De Queros, Emily Fisher
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The River Has Never Divided Us: A Border History Of La Junta De Los Rios. By Jefferson Morgenthaler. (Review), Gerhard Grytz
History Faculty Publications
In this newest Texas Borderlands study, Jefferson Morgenthaler attempts to present a comprehensive history of La Junta and its people. Located in southwestern Texas around the intersection of the Rio Grande and Rio Conchos, La Junta represents one of the longest continuously populated regions in Texas. Eloquently written and based on a wide variety of primary sources. The River Has Never Divided Us lays out, in thirty chapters, rather a mosaic than a coherent history of this culturally rich region and puts its prime focus on historical developments during the nineteenth century and to a much lesser extent the twentieth …

Review Of The Texas Indians By David La Vere, Thomas R. Hester
Review Of The Texas Indians By David La Vere, Thomas R. Hester
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This volume is an overview of Texas Indian cultures from a historian's perspective. It suffers, in places, from both technical and interpretative errors often made by non-specialists trying to synthesize broad topics in anthropology and archaeology. For example, the author states that some Texas Paleo Indians used spear points with "blood gutters," a theory of the fluting on Folsom points that has not been seriously considered in the last sixty years. At the other end of the time scale, the author opines that miss ionized Texas Indians gave up stone tool use manufacture when they had access to (with "amazement …

The Bond And The Beautiful!, Nicole Rearick
The Bond And The Beautiful!, Nicole Rearick
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
My Independent Study Project (ISP) research was conducted in Mombasa, Kenya. I initial intention was to focus on Swahili beauty alone and then it led me to a more in depth study. I came upon the idea of women, beauty, and how they come together for beauty processes and how it creates a bond between them. I was aiming to focus on ways females pull together and help each other in order to become beautiful. I also wanted to discover the many traditions which Swahili women use to beautify themselves and what they consider to be beautiful.
