A Fishing Farm In The West Fjords Of Iceland: A Preliminary Report Of The Archaeofauna From Gjögur, Yekaterina Krivogorskaya, Sophia Perdikaris, Thomas H. Mcgovern

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

The date for the onset of full scale commercial fisheries in Iceland remains somewhat controversial, but thus far the earliest radiocarbon dated seasonal fishing station (11th- 13th century) is in NW Iceland’s Strandasýsla County at Akurvík. This paper presents a preliminary report of the ongoing analysis of the large archaeofauna from the farm mound at Gjögur, 3 km from Akurvík, places the site of Gjögur in the wider context of the NW region of Iceland by comparing the site with the Akurvík archaeofauna, and outlines new methodologies of reconstructing live fish size and age based on recovered fish bones. Although …

'Treaties', 'Agreements', 'Contracts' And 'Commitments' - What's In A Name? The Legal Force And Meaning Of Different Forms Of Agreement Making, David Llewelyn, Maureen Tehan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

The multi-dimensional nature of treaty and agreement making has assumed a central focus in the conduct of relations between Indigenous peoples and settlers in Australia and elsewhere. Whether as a means of resolving disputes, delivering government programmes, or establishing common understandings, agreement making, however defined and named, has become the key tool for engagement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Agreements come in all shapes and sizes ranging from registered Indigenous Land Use Agreements (ILUA) to Statements of Commitment, Memorandums of Understanding and Regional Agreements. In other jurisdictions these may be called 'treaties'. This paper examines the plethora of agreements in …

The Communication Studies Researcher And The Communication Studies Indexes, David C. Tyler, Signe Swanson, Susan M. Leach

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

The existence of widely available large, multi-subject, online databases calls into question the necessity for small, discipline-specific indexes to support research. This study attempts to determine whether the online Communication Studies indexes provide access to the journal literature that researchers in the field actually cite and whether, where the current journal literature is concerned, that access is in any way superior to that provided by large, multi-subject, online indexes.

The Aristocratic City: The Dance Aesthetic Of Dorothee Gunther And The Political Legacy Of Francois Delsarte, Karl Toepfer Apr 2005

The Aristocratic City: The Dance Aesthetic Of Dorothee Gunther And The Political Legacy Of Francois Delsarte, Karl Toepfer

Mime Journal

The Delsartean philosophy of movement adapted to the currents of modernism because some female disciples of Delsarte succeeded in translating the master’s ideas into a modernist idiom compatible with new political and cultural realities. These disciples grasped an underlying principle of the Delsartean system: a body is “free” to the extent that the meanings of its movements can migrate across contexts, that its movements can determine a context as much as a context defines its opportunities for movement. An especially provocative, successful, and even mysterious integration of Delsartean philosophy into modernist performance culture appeared in the work and pedagogy of …

Pendekatan Farmakogenomik Dalam Pengembangan Obat Baru, Maksum Radji Apr 2005

Pendekatan Farmakogenomik Dalam Pengembangan Obat Baru, Maksum Radji

Majalah Ilmu Kefarmasian

The human population is heterogeneous and consists of populations of immense ethnic diversity. There are considerable allelic differences between human popula-tions as well as individuals within each ethnic group as a result of molecular hetero-geneity of the genome. This, in turn, is responsible for differential allelic expression of genes endowing them with polymorphic characters. The molecular diversity within genes is responsible amongst others, of disease resistance or susceptibility or for that matter drug response. Pharmacogenomics is the key to the understanding of differ-ential drug response in different patients in relation to genetic constitution. The revelation of such information at the …

Francois Delsarte, Prince Sergei Volkonsky And Mikhail Chekhov, George Taylor, Rose Whyman Apr 2005

Francois Delsarte, Prince Sergei Volkonsky And Mikhail Chekhov, George Taylor, Rose Whyman

Mime Journal

In 1913 Prince Sergei Volkonsky, a director of the Russian Imperial Ballet, published two books based on Delsarte’s principles which had considerable impact on the Russian modernist theatre. Stanislavsky, Meyerhold and Vakhtangov, all explored the semiology of emotional expression, as did the Russian physiologists Sechenov and Pavlov. Mikhail Chekhov, in particular, developed principles of physical acting, and the article concludes with a comparison between his work and that of Delsarte.

Consciousness And Inspiration In The Delsartean Theory, Elena Randi Apr 2005

Consciousness And Inspiration In The Delsartean Theory, Elena Randi

Mime Journal

Elena Randi observes how the analysis of the relationships between the moral and the physique constitutes a main theme in Delsarte’s theory. As far as the general subject of his study is concerned, Delsarte draws inspiration from the thought of the French idéologues . But as regards the nature of the intérieur , he takes a similar position to Degérando’s or Maine de Biran’s. These intellectuals, after participating in the movement of the idéologues , started investigating the same issues, but argued against their conclusions. Combining some views of Biran’s with concepts taken from the late eighteenth century debate on …

Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach Apr 2005

Civil Religion In The Interfaith Context Of Northern California: Revisiting Robert Bellah's Broken Covenant Project, Harlan Stelmach

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Are there signs of new emerging myths and stories about our religious self-understanding as a nation that will help us address what Robert Bellah calls, our "third time of trial"? On and off for many years, I have been interested in the questions raised by Robert Bellah's work on civil religion. Specifically, I have sought answers to the above question posed in the last Chapter of Broken Covenant, "The Birth of New American Myths." Perhaps to be more precise about my interest in this question, I would at least have to go back to my graduate student days in Berkeley …

Iklan Lampau Indonesia Dalam Wujud Komik Analisis Bahasa Dan Grafis, Zeffry Alkatiri

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

As a powerful medium to persuade people to buy a product or service, ads have long been used in many forms. This study attempts to understand the language use and graphic design of comic as one of the ads forms in Jakarta-based Indonesian media, particularly in the period of 1940-1960s. By employing different approaches in Linguistic Anthropology, Mass Communication and Graphic Design, the findings show a close relationship between the language and the graphic design of the ads with the society who consumed them as well as a trend towards informal language use and popular culture.
