Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag May 2005

Digital Democracy And Its Application To The International Arena – From “Deliberation” To “Decision”, Alexander Siedschlag

Publications

Apart from the discussion about computer-mediated change in community and domestic political affairs, there is a pending debate on general effects of internet- or “net”-based communication on international politics. The reference to international politics rather than international relations is a consciously chosen one – for this paper focuses on net effects on collective decision-making rather than international-society processes. IP/IR driven research on internet-induced political change does not very much link itself to the state of knowledge in internet-and-politics research. Rather, it commonly departs from sub-discipline specific concepts such as neorealist power analysis or post-international turbulence analysis (cf. Allison 2002).

The Public Market System Of New Orleans: Food Deserts, Food Security, And Food Politics, Nicole Taylor

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluates the public market system in New Orleans, Louisiana by focusing on the history of New Orleans public markets, the privatization of food, and the "greening" of the city with the creation of the Crescent City Farmers Market and other grass roots food activist efforts. Using qualitative methods, ethnographic fieldwork, participant observation and interviewing, issues of food access, food security, food production, food locality, quality, and affordability in New Orleans are explored. The history of public markets in New Orleans and the patterns of market proliferation, regulation, and privatization are significant in the landscape of cultural self-identification, community …

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between the environment and the satisfaction of certain part-time university faculty members. A web-based, confidential questionnaire was made available to voluntary participants. The data collection occurred during the Fall semester of 2004. The survey provided data from 10 Louisiana universities in the top four Carnegies categories of Doctoral Extensive, Doctoral Intensive, and Masters I and II universities. Law And Neuroscience, Atahualpa Fernandez May 2005

Law And Neuroscience, Atahualpa Fernandez

ExpressO

Localizing the brain correlates related to moral judgments, using neuroimage techniques (and also studies on brain lesions), seems to be, without doubt, one of the big events in the history of the normative social sciences. The best neuroscientific model of normative judgment available today establishes that the ethical-cerebral law operator counts on, in his neural evaluative-affective systems, a permanent presence of requirements, obligations and strategies, with a “should be” that incorporates internally rational and emotional reasons, that are constitutively integrated in all the activities at the practical, theoretical and normal levels of every process of exercising the law.

Law And Human Nature: The Social-Adaptive Function Of The Normative Behavior, Atahualpa Fernandez May 2005

Law And Human Nature: The Social-Adaptive Function Of The Normative Behavior, Atahualpa Fernandez

ExpressO

The objective of this article is to offer a critical (re)interpretation of genesis and evolution, object and purpose, as well as useful qualified methods for interpreting, justifying and applying modern practical law, all with the intention of putting philosophic thought and contemporary formal theory of reason at the service of hermeutics and juridical argumentation. Law is no more—no less—than an social-adaptive strategy, evermore complex, but always noticeably deficient, used to articulate argumentatively—in fact, not always with justice—through the virtue of prudence, elementary relational social ties through which men construct approved styles of interaction and social structure, i.e., to organize and …

Community Identity And Sense Of Place In Fairbanks, Alaska, Eun Sook Sul May 2005

Community Identity And Sense Of Place In Fairbanks, Alaska, Eun Sook Sul

Communication

Autobiographical narratives of shared experience are explored in a narrative qualitative approach regarding people who have come to Fairbanks, Alaska and decided to stay. Six co-researchers shared their lived experience regarding what influenced their staying in Alaska and resulting changes to their identity. This research is based on a Communication perspective, in particular, adopting Costructionism as epistemology for this study. Social Construction of Reality is the theoretical basis for a discussion of social construction of identity, social construction of community, and social construction of sense of place. This study focuses on the experience of changes in the co-researchers' identity through …

Alaska Native Leadership Succession Planning: A Study Of Leadership Planning For Alaska Native Organizations, Gail Pass May 2005

Alaska Native Leadership Succession Planning: A Study Of Leadership Planning For Alaska Native Organizations, Gail Pass

Rural Development

This study is based on qualitative interviews of four Alaska Native leaders, and one case study of an Alaska Native leadership program. Alaska Native organizations can expect to change quite dramatically over time if Alaska Native leadership succession is not strategically planned out. This study reveals the insights on leadership and the progression of leaders. Current Alaska Native leaders share their experiences of their leadership journeys and those they are familiar with. There is a case for the strategic planning and implementation of leadership succession and there is a case against formulating plans and letting the natural courses take over. …

Linking Local Knowledge And Fisheries Science: The Case With Humpback Whitefish (Coregonus Pidschian) In Interior Alaska, Melissa Anne Robinson May 2005

Linking Local Knowledge And Fisheries Science: The Case With Humpback Whitefish (Coregonus Pidschian) In Interior Alaska, Melissa Anne Robinson

Biological Sciences

Humpback whitefish (Coregonus pidschian) are the main subsistence fish for the residents of the Athabascan village of Northway. Local residents' concerns over whitefish and gaps in knowledge in the scientific community about whitefish basic ecology provided a basis for collaboration between fisheries scientists, social scientists, and Northway Village. Through semi-directed interviews and participant observation, I documented and linked local and scientific knowledge about whitefish. Trust, formed in part by my engagement with the community, was essential to meaningful collaboration between local and scientific experts. Through collaboration, insights emerged about the long-distance migrations of whitefish (up to 230 km), their small-scale …

Shades Of Green: Perspectives On Nature In Nancy Lord's 'Green Alaska', Michael Eugene Stubbs May 2005

Shades Of Green: Perspectives On Nature In Nancy Lord's 'Green Alaska', Michael Eugene Stubbs

English

This thesis is a work of literary criticism, specifically eco-criticism, of the non-fiction book 'Green Alaska: Dreams from the Far Coast' by Alaskan writer Nancy Lord. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the literary techniques employed by Lord in her representation of nature in this book. Furthermore, the purpose of this thesis is to present Lord's book to the critical field in order to open a discussion of her work among other critics. It is argued that Lord uses the multiple meanings of the word 'green' and multiple perspectives concerning nature to complicate perspectives and perceptions of nature …

Evolutionary Explanations In Medical And Health Profession Courses: Are You Answering Your Students' "Why" Questions?, Eugene E. Harris, Avelin A. Malyango May 2005

Evolutionary Explanations In Medical And Health Profession Courses: Are You Answering Your Students' "Why" Questions?, Eugene E. Harris, Avelin A. Malyango

Publications and Research

Background Medical and pre-professional health students ask questions about human health that can be answered in two ways, by giving proximate and evolutionary explanations. Proximate explanations, most common in textbooks and classes, describe the immediate scientifically known biological mechanisms of anatomical characteristics or physiological processes. These explanations are necessary but insufficient. They can be complemented with evolutionary explanations that describe the evolutionary processes and principles that have resulted in human biology we study today. The main goal of the science of Darwinian Medicine is to investigate human disease, disorders, and medical complications from an evolutionary perspective. Discussion This paper contrasts …
