Allosteric Models For Multimeric Proteins : Oxygen-Linked Effector Binding In Hemocyanin., Michael Menze, Nadja Hellman, Heinz Decker, Manfred Grieshaber

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In many crustaceans, changing concentrations of several low molecular weight compounds modulates hemocyanin oxygen binding, resulting in lower or higher oxygen affinities of the pigment. The nonphysiological effector caffeine and the physiological modulator urate, the latter accumulating in the hemolymph of the lobster Homarus Vulgaris during hypoxia, increase hemocyanin oxygen affinity and decrease cooperativity of oxygen binding. To derive a model that describes the mechanism of allosteric interaction between hemocyanin and oxygen in the presence of urate or caffeine, studies of oxygen, urate, and caffeine binding to hemocyanin were performed. Exposure of lobster hemocyanin to various pH values between 7.25 …

Effect Of Dietary Fatty Acid Composition On Depot Fat And Exercise Performance In A Migrating Songbird, The Red-Eyed Vireo, Barbara J. Pierce, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Timothy P. O'Connor, Allen R. Pace, Christopher G. Guglielmo Jan 2005

Effect Of Dietary Fatty Acid Composition On Depot Fat And Exercise Performance In A Migrating Songbird, The Red-Eyed Vireo, Barbara J. Pierce, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Timothy P. O'Connor, Allen R. Pace, Christopher G. Guglielmo

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Most migrating birds accumulate lipid stores as their primary source of energy for fueling long distance flights. Lipid stores of birds during migration are composed of mostly unsaturated fatty acids; whether such a fatty acid composition enhances exercise performance of birds is unknown. We tested this hypothesis by measuring metabolic rate at rest and during intense exercise in two groups of red-eyed vireos, a long-distance migratory passerine, fed either a diet containing 82% unsaturated fat (82%U), or one containing 58% unsaturated fat (58%U). Vireos fed the 82%U diet had fat stores containing (77%) unsaturated fatty acids, whereas vireos fed the …

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard Jan 2005

Restoring Image In Party Schools, Rod Pritchard

Iowa Journal of Communication

College ranking guides have gained prominence and popularity in recent years as consumer-driven parents seek to find the best educational institutions for their children. While The Princeton Review's The Best Colleges publication has emerged as a popular college guide, at least one designation in the annual college guidebook, "Party Schools" (Franek et al., 2004, p. 43), creates a negative image for the colleges and universities listed. In an effort to protect the reputation of these institutions, research indicates that image restoration management techniques are widely implemented. The use of the defensive image restoration strategies is the most common, but the …

"Second-Class Families": Media Portrayal Of Adoption In America, Jennifer Ellen Struve Jan 2005

"Second-Class Families": Media Portrayal Of Adoption In America, Jennifer Ellen Struve

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Despite legal recognition of adoption as a legitimate family form, research suggests that adoptive families face a special set of circumstances revolving around the societal stigma involved with adoption. Additionally, adoptees admit to experiencing legal, social, and institutional discrimination because of their adoptive status. Although there have been many celebrations of adoption (such as Dave Thomas), there are cultural norms regarding the family that discipline us to see adoption negatively. Researchers acknowledge that the language surrounding adoption is negative, but do not pursue what that language is or where it appears. Thus, the purpose ofmy study was to determine how …

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta Jan 2005

Rethinking Life Online: The Interactional Self As A Theory For Internet-Mediated Communication, Marcelo Vieta

Iowa Journal of Communication

Informed by the philosophies of Martin Heidegger, George Herbert Mead, and Alfred Schutz, this paper presents an emerging concept called the interactional self to illustrate how there are no clear phenomenological distinctions between the so-called "virtual world" and the dichotomously positioned "real world" in Internet-mediated communication settings. Ultimately, the paper shows how the philosophies of human experience can help the communication researcher better conceptualize the tight intermingling of the online with the offline, users' phenomenologically-rooted use-contexts, performative practices, and intersubjective life-world experiences in Internet-mediated sociability.

The Elusive Meaning Of Religious Equality, Robin Charlow Jan 2005

The Elusive Meaning Of Religious Equality, Robin Charlow

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Raging national debates about the relationship of church and state often find parties sparring over whether the government is treating religious interests equally. This essay endeavors to explain why there is such widespread disagreement about the meaning of religious equality. It explores both jurisprudential and doctrinal sources of dispute, including: the multidimensional nature of equality generally, the uniqueness of religion, the difficulty of defining religion, and the problem of identifying the proper baseline or point of comparison for assessing religious equality. Ultimately, we cannot separate issues of religious equality from disputes about the meaning of the Constitution's religion clauses. The …

Equality, Objectivity, And Neutrality, Alafair Burke Jan 2005

Equality, Objectivity, And Neutrality, Alafair Burke

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In her recently published book, Murder and the Reasonable Man: Passion and Fear in the Criminal Courtroom, Cynthia Lee weaves together an array of case narratives to argue that the concept of reasonableness in self-defense and provocation cases allows majority culture defendants to benefit from jurors' deeply ingrained biases. She makes her case by drawing from three categories of cases: men who claim they were provoked to kill by female infidelity; gay panic cases, in which heterosexual defendants claim self-defense or provocation from unwanted homosexual advances; and racialized fear cases, in which white defendants claim self-defense to justify the killing …

Making Spousal Estate Tax Exemptions Transferable, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr Jan 2005

Making Spousal Estate Tax Exemptions Transferable, Mitchell M. Gans, Jonathan G. Blattmachr

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Under the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, taxpayers are permitted a federal gift tax exemption and an estate tax exemption. Although technically not exemptions but more in the nature of exemption "equivalents" that entitle taxpayers to a credit, each is more easily understood as an exemption. The gift tax exemption, as so understood, is $1 million for each taxpayer and is not scheduled to increase. The estate tax exemption, as also so understood, is $1 million for 2005 and is scheduled to become $2 million in 2006, 2007, and 2008 and reach $3.5 million in 2009. There will be no …

Evidence For A General Species Time Arearelationship, P. B. Adler, Ethan P. White, W. K. Lauenroth, D. M. Kaufman, A. Rassweiler, J. A. Rusak

Biology Faculty Publications

The species-area relationship (SAR) plays a central role in biodiversity research, and recent work has increased awareness of its temporal analog, the species-time relationship (STR). Here we provide evidence for a general species-time-area-relationship (STAR), in which species number is a function of the area and time span of sampling, as well as their interaction. For eight assemblages ranging from lake zooplankton to desert rodents, this model outperformed a sampling-based model and two simpler models in which area and time had independent effects. In every case the interaction term was negative, meaning that rates of species accumulation in space decreased with …

Body Size, Energy Use, And Community Structure Of Small Mammals, S.K. Morgan Ernest Jan 2005

Body Size, Energy Use, And Community Structure Of Small Mammals, S.K. Morgan Ernest

Biology Faculty Publications

Body size has long been hypothesized to play a major role in community structure and dynamics. Two general hypotheses exist for how resources are distributed among body sizes: (1) resources are equally available and uniformly utilized across body sizes and (2) resources are differentially available to organisms of different body sizes, resulting in a nonuniform or modal distribution. It has also been predicted that the distri-bution of body sizes of species in a community should reflect the underlying availability of resources, with the emergence of aggregations of species around specific body sizes. I examined the relationship between energy utilization, body …

Intra-Guild Compensation Regulatesspecies Richness In Desert Rodents, J. Goheen, Ethan P. White, S.K. Morgan Ernest, J. H. Brown Jan 2005

Intra-Guild Compensation Regulatesspecies Richness In Desert Rodents, J. Goheen, Ethan P. White, S.K. Morgan Ernest, J. H. Brown

Biology Faculty Publications

Evidence from numerous studies suggests that species richness is an emergent property of local communities. The maintenance of species richness, despite changes in species composition and environmental conditions, requires compensatory colonization and extinction events with species coming from a regional pool. Using long-term data from a rodent community in the Chihuahuan Desert, we use randomization methods to test the null hypothesis that changes in species richness occur randomly. We find that the dynamics of species richness differ significantly from a random process, and that these nonrandom dynamics occur largely within the most speciose guild. Finally, we propose a general framework …
