Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics Of London's Theatre Audiences, 1567--1642, Brook Adelaide Mcginnis Jan 2005

Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics Of London's Theatre Audiences, 1567--1642, Brook Adelaide Mcginnis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Knowing one's audience is crucial to any theatre. How can the marketing staff target new patrons if they know nothing about their immediate audience? This quandary need not be limited to the present. Therefore, the thesis I propose is entitled "Penny Stinkards And Proper Gentlemen: The Demographics of London's Theatre Audiences 1567-1642." I have researched the different facets of Elizabethan life that may have played a factor in attendance. Rather than discussing whom Middleton, Kyd, and Shakespeare were writing for, I have discussed who may have actually attended. Whom one writes for and who ends up in the audience are …

Gravel Ghosts: Selected Poems, Megan Ann Merchant Jan 2005

Gravel Ghosts: Selected Poems, Megan Ann Merchant

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In his collection of poetry and prose Spring and All, William Carlos Williams said, "the reader knows himself as he was twenty years ago and he has also in mind a vision of what he would be someday. Oh some day! But the thing he never knows and never dares to know is what he is at the exact moment that he is. And this moment is the only thing in which I am at all interested" (88-89). That moment is the landscape for my collected works, Gravel Ghosts. The flower itself is a great representation of the desired moment …

Political Factionalism Among The Mojave Indians, 1826--1875, Melinda A Oesterman Jan 2005

Political Factionalism Among The Mojave Indians, 1826--1875, Melinda A Oesterman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Fort Mojave Indians of California and Mohave Indians of Arizona were once united on their aboriginal territory. Their lifestyle was impacted by interaction with the Spanish, fur trappers, military explorers and emigrant parties; Spanish interaction with the Mojave in the 1600s resulted in little change. The fur trappers of the 1820s generally lacked cultural awareness and respect of Mojave resources. Military expeditions along the 35th parallel into Mojave territory were generally well received and aided by some Mojave, while other Mojave were cautious of the "foreign invaders." Emigrant parties soon followed, causing alarm among the Mojave as they believed …

Music As A Rhetorical Form: The Use Of Audio In "America's Most Wanted", Josette Nicole Perrone Jan 2005

Music As A Rhetorical Form: The Use Of Audio In "America's Most Wanted", Josette Nicole Perrone

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

In the roughly fifty years since television programming began, the medium has gone from being a mere novelty to a major cultural force. Television is pervasive and widespread---nearly every home in America has one. It is hard to deny that because of its presence in our culture that some of its messages get through. My project is centered on the extent to which those messages affect the lives of its viewers; The purpose of the project is to examine music as a rhetorical form by analyzing a ten-minute segment of "America's Most Wanted" (AMW) on the Washington D.C. sniper case …

An Analysis Of Ground Stone Artifacts From Ghwair I, A Pre-Pottery Neolithic B Site In Southern Jordan, Claudia C Woodman Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Ground Stone Artifacts From Ghwair I, A Pre-Pottery Neolithic B Site In Southern Jordan, Claudia C Woodman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Ground stone artifacts indicating food preparation and other activities are well-represented among the assemblage resulting from three seasons of excavation at Ghwair I, a Pre-Pottery Neolithic B site in southern Jordan Placement of Ghwair I in context of roughly contemporaneous Levantine sites indicates that its ground stone assemblage is typical of the period and that Ghwair I was a self-reliant community. The ground stone assemblage indicates that mobility of the site's occupants was relatively low. Spatial analysis of distribution of ground stone across the site suggests specialized activity loci and, possibly, early social stratification.

Examining The Basis For Change In Clark County Non-Conforming Zone Change Process: Was It Needed?, Maria Kaseko Jan 2005

Examining The Basis For Change In Clark County Non-Conforming Zone Change Process: Was It Needed?, Maria Kaseko

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study reviews Clark County's non-conforming zone change process from 1990 to 2002. A non-conforming zone change, sometimes known as a non-conforming zone boundary amendment is a proposed request that is not within the range of residential densities and/or non-residential intensities indicated on the applicable land use plan map, master plan, or concept plan. This research explores and examines two questions raised by the Clark County's new implementation plan, which was approved in April 2003 to amend the non-conforming zone change process. (1) Clark County assumed there was a public perception that non-conforming zone changes were being approved without regard …

Fallow, Chad Michael Lietz Jan 2005

Fallow, Chad Michael Lietz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fallow follows both line & circle---i.e., the generational evolution (cultural, political, personal) of family farms in the Amurrikan Midwest; & the mandalic forces beneath, above & within. The steady decline & demise of the family farm faced w/corporate feudalism, signals not only the degradation of a lifestyle, but also the final nullification of Jefferson's yeoman farmer, upon (& for) whom this country is supposedly founded; Of course, the depredation of a mere human culture pales vs. the ecological transgressions of modernization: tillage, petrochemicals, ever-bigger machines. Few landscapes outside the Heartland have been so thoroughly stripped of indigenous life, & now, …

Behavioral Ecophysiology Of Dungeness Crabs During Feeding And Digestion In Hypoxia, Jennifer Lynn Bernatis Jan 2005

Behavioral Ecophysiology Of Dungeness Crabs During Feeding And Digestion In Hypoxia, Jennifer Lynn Bernatis

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Cancer magister inhabits areas frequently subject to periods of hypoxia. In hypoxia, digestive processes pose an additional physiological burden to crabs already attempting to maintain adequate oxygen uptake. Crabs tended to cease feeding below 3.2 kPa, resuming feeding when dissolved oxygen levels were rapidly raised to 6 kPa. In a 10.5-21 kPa DO gradient starved and fed crabs showed no preference for any area of the apparatus. In a 2.5-10.5 kPa DO gradient, starved and fed crabs showed significant preference for the highest oxygen concentration. Starved crabs were less likely to enter hypoxic waters to feed; those that did moved …

Short-Term Compensatory And Long-Term Plastic Cardiorespiratory Responses To Hypoxic Exposure, Jutta A Guadagnoli Jan 2005

Short-Term Compensatory And Long-Term Plastic Cardiorespiratory Responses To Hypoxic Exposure, Jutta A Guadagnoli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Aquatic organisms may encounter multiple perturbations in their environment including but certainly not limited to fluctuations in temperature, salinity, conductivity, pH, carbon dioxide and oxygen content. A large body of work has elucidated the complexity of the cardiovascular system of crustaceans but the intricacies associated with alterations in cardiovascular function with changing environments are elusive. The current body of work focuses on the cardiovascular adjustments that allow crustaceans to survive decreases in oxygen tension; The complexity of control of the open circulatory system of crustaceans has long been underestimated and the marine crustacean, the grass shrimp, P. pugio, which often …

The Potential Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On Human Populations In The Western Mojave Desert, Jill Kathleen Gardner Jan 2005

The Potential Impact Of The Medieval Climatic Anomaly On Human Populations In The Western Mojave Desert, Jill Kathleen Gardner

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

During the late 1980s and early 1990s, a model was proposed for changing settlement and subsistence patterns in the western Mojave Desert. The model posits that environmental fluctuations over the last 4,000 years were potential causal mechanisms for culture change in this region. One of these fluctuations was the environmental episode known as the Medieval Climatic Anomaly (MCA), a series of droughts that took place between about 1,200 and 650 B.P. The intent of this study was to determine whether apparent culture changes that began about 1,200 years ago in the western Mojave Desert are associated with the MCA. To …

All four formations analyzed show a static delta 13C record that varies from …

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy And Working Memory Capacity On Problem Solving Efficiency, Bobby H Hoffman Jan 2005

The Influence Of Self-Efficacy And Working Memory Capacity On Problem Solving Efficiency, Bobby H Hoffman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The study investigated the influence of self-efficacy beliefs, working memory capacity and problem complexity on problem solving performance, response time, and problem solving efficiency. Previous research investigated these factors from an absolute performance perspective, but not from the perspective of efficiency, defined as the ratio of problem-solving accuracy over time; Students completed an operational span working memory task, rated their self-efficacy for solving multiplication problems without the use of paper or calculation aids, and then solved computer-based cognitive multiplication problems, under conditions of varying complexity. Two competing hypotheses were proposed, which state that the efficiency of problem solving is either …

Brief Therapy For Traumatized Children, Lisa Marie Linning Jan 2005

Brief Therapy For Traumatized Children, Lisa Marie Linning

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Traumatic child maltreatment can negatively impact every developmental domain of a child, when left untreated. Thus, child psychologists have recognized a critical need for treatment and prevention strategies to circumvent the negative trajectories that can develop after traumatic events. Brief Therapy for Traumatized Children (BTTC) was developed to treat traumatized youth in shelter care. Treatment components included psychoeducation, building effective coping strategies, boundary setting, anxiety management skills, challenging cognitive distortions, development of trauma narrative and journaling. One hundred-forty-seven participants from a children's shelter in Las Vegas, NV, aged 12--17 years, were voluntarily recruited and assessed for trauma symptoms. Data from …

Cognitive Heterogeneity In Murderers, Erin Warnick Jan 2005

Cognitive Heterogeneity In Murderers, Erin Warnick

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

It has long been recognized that damage to one or more brain regions can produce antisocial and aggressive behavior. Unfortunately, however, attempts to develop a replicable neurocognitive profile that characterize serious forms of criminality have been relatively unsuccessful. Evidence of cognitive heterogeneity in violent offender populations may indicate different biobehavioral subtypes underling this complex multidetermined behavior. These subtypes may interact with other clinical and environmental vulnerabilities. In the current study, cluster analytic techniques were applied to a sample of 55 homicide offenders. Using select Halstead-Reitan and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) variables four distinct cognitive clusters were derived and externally …

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a high protein diet on glucose tolerance in the rat model. Nine Sprague Dawley rats received a high protein diet (65% protein, 35% fat) and eight rats consumed a standard chow diet over the course of eight weeks. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed at the end of the third and the seventh week to measure blood glucose and plasma insulin concentrations. The diet did not effect glucose tolerance in the first OGTT (t = 1.2095, p = .1226) or the second OGTT (t = -.9855, p …

Youth Culture, Clothing, And Communicative Messages, Eric Batson Jan 2005

Youth Culture, Clothing, And Communicative Messages, Eric Batson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

As a nonverbal form of communication, clothing reveals much about its wearers. In addition to exposing attitudes, values, beliefs, and other personal traits, individuals can utilize clothing to disseminate deliberate, symbolic messages. This project focuses on youth subcultures and the messages associated with their strategically constructed clothing images. It addresses how they display in-group affiliation and out-group separation through the management of clothing. It discusses how individuals can increase their personal value with in-group members as they manage their apparel in appropriate and deliberate ways. This thesis also notes the multiple influences that affect the clothing choices of youth subcultures …

Experimental And Finite Element Studies Of Shock Transmission Through Jointed Hat Sections, Karthik Doppala Jan 2005

Experimental And Finite Element Studies Of Shock Transmission Through Jointed Hat Sections, Karthik Doppala

The study also indicates that the presence of a countdown timer helps the pedestrians to better understand the meaning of the "Flashing …

Analysis Of Fatty Acids In Soil And Sediments, Deepika P Panawennage Jan 2005

Analysis Of Fatty Acids In Soil And Sediments, Deepika P Panawennage

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Fatty acids are one of the most important classes of naturally occurring organic compounds. Various organisms have distinctive fatty acid profiles. Therefore analyzing fatty acids present in soil and sediments can provide important information on sources of origin of the organic matter; Analysis of fatty acids by gas chromatography requires derivatization to produce a derivative volatile enough for gas chromatography followed by mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis. In this work conventional acid catalyzed derivatization methods and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) chemopyrolysis methods were examined and compared. Results obtained for Lake Mead sediments show the variation of fatty acids profile with depth, which …

Charm City, Victoria Elizabeth Plasse Jan 2005

Charm City, Victoria Elizabeth Plasse

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Charm City is under construction. It is a space occupied with mutability, free will and perception through physical evidence. This is the ephemeral renovation project of the individual. It is a poetic city trying to articulate what it is to have the rhythms of history and new philosophy manifest into the real. Motion is central to the city and central to the empty space the city has yet to define or occupy. Could Charm City exist outside of America---yes---but the words and sounds would be different. Central to America is motion and central to motion is a guttural voice: an …

Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw Jan 2005

Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Just as eighteenth century master seamstress Betsy Ross implemented more meanings and messages into the first American flag than what is obvious at first glance, so too did African American seamstresses weave messages into quilt patterns used on the Underground Railroad. Similar to the way themes of freedom and liberty in the Declaration of Independence were reinterpreted to include disenfranchised groups, Biblical themes such as heaven and the Promised Land were reinterpreted to include slaves. This study examines the visual rhetoric of nineteenth century textiles used by the Underground Railroad. From the evidence examined, I argue that the visual texts …

Differences In Soil Physical, Chemical And Mineralogical Properties Between Inhabited And Uninhabited Arctomecon Californica Habitats, Rekha Saxena Jan 2005

Differences In Soil Physical, Chemical And Mineralogical Properties Between Inhabited And Uninhabited Arctomecon Californica Habitats, Rekha Saxena

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Vascular plant endemism to gypsum soils in arid environments is fairly rare; in southern Nevada few plant species are known to exist solely on gypsum soils and the explanation for why they exist on these soils is even less understood. One such species, commonly known as Las Vegas Bearpoppy (Arctomecon californica), is believed to be a gypsophile endemic occurring on substrates derived from the Moenkopi and Horse springs geological formations in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. During the past two decades, populations of A. californica have been declining mostly around the rapidly developing urban areas on public lands on the …
