Analysis Of Fatty Acids In Soil And Sediments, Deepika P Panawennage
Analysis Of Fatty Acids In Soil And Sediments, Deepika P Panawennage
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Fatty acids are one of the most important classes of naturally occurring organic compounds. Various organisms have distinctive fatty acid profiles. Therefore analyzing fatty acids present in soil and sediments can provide important information on sources of origin of the organic matter; Analysis of fatty acids by gas chromatography requires derivatization to produce a derivative volatile enough for gas chromatography followed by mass spectrometric (GC/MS) analysis. In this work conventional acid catalyzed derivatization methods and tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) chemopyrolysis methods were examined and compared. Results obtained for Lake Mead sediments show the variation of fatty acids profile with depth, which …
Charm City, Victoria Elizabeth Plasse
Charm City, Victoria Elizabeth Plasse
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Charm City is under construction. It is a space occupied with mutability, free will and perception through physical evidence. This is the ephemeral renovation project of the individual. It is a poetic city trying to articulate what it is to have the rhythms of history and new philosophy manifest into the real. Motion is central to the city and central to the empty space the city has yet to define or occupy. Could Charm City exist outside of America---yes---but the words and sounds would be different. Central to America is motion and central to motion is a guttural voice: an …
Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw
Points Of Contact: Nineteenth Century Visual Rhetoric Of The Underground Railroad, Theodore Ransaw
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Just as eighteenth century master seamstress Betsy Ross implemented more meanings and messages into the first American flag than what is obvious at first glance, so too did African American seamstresses weave messages into quilt patterns used on the Underground Railroad. Similar to the way themes of freedom and liberty in the Declaration of Independence were reinterpreted to include disenfranchised groups, Biblical themes such as heaven and the Promised Land were reinterpreted to include slaves. This study examines the visual rhetoric of nineteenth century textiles used by the Underground Railroad. From the evidence examined, I argue that the visual texts …
Differences In Soil Physical, Chemical And Mineralogical Properties Between Inhabited And Uninhabited Arctomecon Californica Habitats, Rekha Saxena
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Vascular plant endemism to gypsum soils in arid environments is fairly rare; in southern Nevada few plant species are known to exist solely on gypsum soils and the explanation for why they exist on these soils is even less understood. One such species, commonly known as Las Vegas Bearpoppy (Arctomecon californica), is believed to be a gypsophile endemic occurring on substrates derived from the Moenkopi and Horse springs geological formations in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. During the past two decades, populations of A. californica have been declining mostly around the rapidly developing urban areas on public lands on the …
Development Of A Street Sweeper Fleet Management System, Ravi Shenkar Seera
Development Of A Street Sweeper Fleet Management System, Ravi Shenkar Seera
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Street sweeping is a vital public service that not only facilitates traffic flow and improves the appearance of the neighborhoods. It also helps removes debris and dust from the roadways thus enhancing drainage and reducing air pollution. The need for a street sweeper fleet management system is to help improve the efficiency and effectiveness of street sweeping programs. In this research, an application is developed for the management of street sweepers with the aid of a mapping system interface to query and analyze the data collected using Global Positioning System (GPS) devices installed in the sweeper trucks. Based on the …
Conceptual Modeling And Analysis Of A Solar Receiver For Thermochemical Hydrogen Generation, Derek Satoru Taguchi
Conceptual Modeling And Analysis Of A Solar Receiver For Thermochemical Hydrogen Generation, Derek Satoru Taguchi
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Hydrogen has the potential to revolutionize the way we live our everyday lives in the near future. With the global demand for oil increasing and pumping capabilities running at, or almost at full capacity, the world will eventually have to turn to alternative energy sources to satisfy the need for fuel in the near future; The processes involved in designing a system capable of hydrogen production include many different components. For the generation of hydrogen through a solar process, one of these components is the design and analysis of the solar receiver. The solar receiver is the component of the …

The Burn: A Novel, Kevin Michael Capp
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The Burn: A Novel tells the story of Richie Thornton, a 21-year-old former petty criminal and minor drug dealer. The Establishment, Management And Evaluation Of The Conservation Reserve System In The Rangelands Of Western Australia, Anthony Brandis
The Establishment, Management And Evaluation Of The Conservation Reserve System In The Rangelands Of Western Australia, Anthony Brandis
Theses
The rangelands of Western Australia cover about 85% of the State and include the sub-tropical savanna of the Kimberley, the semi arid and arid spinifex, the southern mulga shrublands and the extensive chenopod plains of the Nullarbor. About 40% of the rangelands are managed for the production of meat and wool under a pastoral lease system. A large range of ecosystems occurs within these pastoral leases where, after a relatively short period of time, many changes to native flora and fauna populations have occurred. Biological diversity in the rangelands is declining most noticeably with the extinction, or reduction in the …

Squaring The Circle? Reconciling Sovereignty And Global Governance Through Global Government Networks (Review Of Anne-Marie Slaughter, A New World Order), Kenneth Anderson
Squaring The Circle? Reconciling Sovereignty And Global Governance Through Global Government Networks (Review Of Anne-Marie Slaughter, A New World Order), Kenneth Anderson
Book Reviews
This book review summarizes and critiques A New World Order, offering both an internal critique of the argument's consistency as well as an outside critique of the argument from the standpoint of the value of democratic sovereignty. The review locates Slaughter's argument within the debate over international relations realism and idealism, and further locates it within a continuum of seven idealized positions in the debate between global governance and sovereignty, with pure sovereignty at one extreme and world government at the other, with the most relevant positions of democratic sovereignty and liberal internationalism located in the middle. The article concludes …
