Faculty Scholarship

Octocorals are diverse and abundant on many marine hard substrates, and, within this group, members of the family Plexauridae are an important component of tropical reef assemblages, especially in the Caribbean. To understand historical relationships within this large and diverse assemblage, and to test the monophyly of the family and some of its genera, DNA sequences of two mitochondrial loci (msh1 and ND2, _1,185 bp) were analyzed from 46 species in 21 genera from deep and shallow waters in the tropical western Atlantic and in the tropical western and eastern Pacific (plus 9 taxa in the closely related Gorgoniidae and …

Structural Advances For Pattern Discovery In Multi-Relational Databases, Juveria Kanodia Jan 2005

Structural Advances For Pattern Discovery In Multi-Relational Databases, Juveria Kanodia

Theses

With ever-growing storage needs and drift towards very large relational storage settings, multi-relational data mining has become a prominent and pertinent field for discovering unique and interesting relational patterns. As a consequence, a whole suite of multi-relational data mining techniques is being developed. These techniques may either be extensions to the already existing single-table mining techniques or may be developed from scratch. For the traditionalists, single-table mining algorithms can be used to work on multi-relational settings by making inelegant and time consuming joins of all target relations. However, complex relational patterns cannot be expressed in a single-table format and thus, …

Monteverde, Costa Rica: Balancing Environment And Development, 2005, Erin Cavanagh

Monteverde Institute: Economy and Resource Management

Two years ago I would have never imagined that I would see the glow of molten lava contrasting against the night sky, stand on the top of a mountain looking at the Pacific Ocean hundreds of miles away, or become the daughter of a family other than my own. I began my journey through the World Food Prize program in February 2004 when my friend Lindsey Negaard told me that she would be interning in Mexico for the World Food Prize. After explaining to me all the different steps necessary to compete for an internship, she asked me if I …

Keyword Or Hierarchical Searching? A Quantitative Comparison Of World Wide Web Searching Methods By High School Juniors In North Iowa, Harold Price

Graduate Research Papers

In the spring of 2005, twenty 11th grade students from north central Iowa were given 5 topics to search on the Internet. All students were allowed 5 minutes to search for each of 5 topics and used identical equipment to perform the searches. The population consisted of 10 male and 10 female students. As there is a marked lack of ethnic and cultural diversity in the community, all students were Caucasian with English being their first language. All students were of similar socio-economic class since there is little variance in the community. Students were chosen based primarily on a range …

Patenting The Minotaur, Bratislav Stanković Jan 2005

Patenting The Minotaur, Bratislav Stanković

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

Half man, half bull, the Minotaur was the most fearsome monster in Greek mythology. Human torso and bull’s head, its horns were sharp as knives, its great hooves could kick the life out the strongest of heroes, and its food was human flesh. Yet under the surface, the Minotaur’s myth was sad; his insatiable existence originated in jealousy and lust.

Geographic Variation And Speciation In Rough-Winged Swallows (Aves: Hirundinidae: Stelgidopteryx), M. Josephine Babin Jan 2005

Geographic Variation And Speciation In Rough-Winged Swallows (Aves: Hirundinidae: Stelgidopteryx), M. Josephine Babin

LSU Master's Theses

This study is an examination of geographic variation and evolutionary history of Stelgidopteryx swallows. These swallows comprise two recognized species: Northern Rough-winged Swallow (S. serripennis) and Southern Rough-winged Swallow (S. ruficollis). A third species, Yucatan Rough-winged Swallow (S. ridgwayi)is also commonly recognized. The species are largely allopatric, except for a contact zone in Costa Rica. Using plumage and molecular variation, I examined the likelihood of two (or three) different species of rough-winged swallows, the genetic interrelationships among taxa, and their biogeographic history. Geographic plumage variation reveals a latitudinal cline across the genus from North to South America. Specimens from throughout …

Phytoremediation Of Perchlorate By Native And Exotic Riparian Phreatophytes Of The Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, Seth Adam Shanahan Jan 2005

Phytoremediation Of Perchlorate By Native And Exotic Riparian Phreatophytes Of The Las Vegas Wash, Nevada, Seth Adam Shanahan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The potential to use native (Salix exigua) and exotic (Tamarix ramosissima) phreatophytes to remediate perchlorate from arid riparian environments was investigated by conducting a hydroponic greenhouse experiment. Salix exigua and Tamarix ramosissima exposed to ammonium perchlorate at concentrations of 10 mg L -1 and 100 mg L-1 removed 15 to 22% perchlorate mass from hydroponic solution, with 55 to 64% of removal being taken up into plant tissue. Total perchlorate taken up by plants or removed from solution was not significantly different between species on a mass or oven dry plant weight concentration basis. Significant differences in tissue specific uptake, …

Self-Determination In International Mediation: Some Preliminary Reflections , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley Jan 2005

Self-Determination In International Mediation: Some Preliminary Reflections , Jacqueline Nolan-Haley

Faculty Scholarship

Few concepts have generated as much discussion in the post-war international legal system as that of “self-determination.” Scholars debate the proper identity of the "selves" endowed with this right, its boundaries, and its normative relevance. When the focus turns to mediation, the discussion becomes murky because the concept of self-determination has both procedural and substantive components, and is noticeably different in the private and public sectors. The generic concept of self-determination relates to ideas of democratic governance and the Enlightenment belief that legitimate government depends upon the consent of the governed. As adapted to private mediation theory, the right of …

Relative Effectiveness Of Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: Sensitivity Analysis And Recommended Compression Rates, Charles F. Babbs Jan 2005

Relative Effectiveness Of Interposed Abdominal Compression Cpr: Sensitivity Analysis And Recommended Compression Rates, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Interposed abdominal compression (IAC)-CPR incorporates alternating chest and abdominal compressions to generate enhanced artificial circulation during cardiac arrest. The technique has been generally successful in improving blood flow and survival compared to standard CPR; however some questions remain. Objective: To determine "why does IAC-CPR produce more apparent benefit in some subjects than in others? and "what is the proper compression rate, given that there are actually two compressions (chest and abdomen) in each cycle?" Method: Computer models provide a means to search for subtle effects in complex systems. The present study employs a validated 12-compartment mathematical model of the human …

Cascading Effects Of Predator Removal On The Ecology Of Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches, Brandon Barton Jan 2005

Cascading Effects Of Predator Removal On The Ecology Of Sea Turtle Nesting Beaches, Brandon Barton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Traditional views of food web dynamics have characterized species interactions as linear and direct. However, modern food web theory suggests that interactions can also be nonlinear and indirect, so that disturbance at one trophic level is transmitted throughout the community. Many previous studies have demonstrated that the removal of top predators from terrestrial ecosystems can have broad-scale impacts on community ecology. I examined the direct and indirect effects of raccoon removal from sea turtle nesting beaches in east-central Florida during the summers of 2003 and 2004. Raccoon and ghost crab predation are among the highest causes of egg mortality for …

Internet Advertising: Are We Breaking Ground Or Moving Dirt?, Jaime Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Seeking to validate the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) of Persuasion for the online advertising context, a laboratory experiment utilizing 240 undergraduates was conducted at a southeastern university. The quality of banner advertisement contents--product endorser (spokesperson) and arguments (headlines)--were manipulated testing the variables' effect on click-through and attitude toward the advertisement for groups with high and low levels of product category involvement. Exploring a replica of a popular music website, participants were exposed to the test banners on the site's homepage. Due to the limited number of click-throughs, the relationship between the independent variables and click-through could not be established. However, …

Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy As A Tool For The Investigation Of Tetracycline Fluorescence In Archaeologicalhuman Bone, Corey Maggiano Jan 2005

Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy As A Tool For The Investigation Of Tetracycline Fluorescence In Archaeologicalhuman Bone, Corey Maggiano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Fluorochromes such as tetracycline have been used to label bone for histomorphometric analysis, measuring bone formation, growth, maintenance, and pathology. More recently, similar fluorescence has been observed in ancient human bone. Attributed to tetracycline (TC) exposure, this phenomenon could affect various aspects of health during life and/or preservation of remains postmortem. Standard epifluorescence microscopy is the most common tool employed in the analysis of these labels. Though valuable, this technique is limited by its inability to penetrate bone three-dimensionally and its inclusion of out-of-focus light, possibly disrupting accurate analysis. Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) has been demonstrated as a valuable …

Comparison Of Nicarbazin Absorption In Chickens, Mallards, And Canada Geese, C. A. Yoder, L. A. Miller, K. S. Bynum Jan 2005

Comparison Of Nicarbazin Absorption In Chickens, Mallards, And Canada Geese, C. A. Yoder, L. A. Miller, K. S. Bynum

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Nicarbazin (NCZ), a coccidiostat commonly used in the poultry industry, causes reduced hatchability and egg quality in layer hens at a concentration of 125 ppm (8.4 mg/kg) in the feed. Although this effect is undesirable in the poultry industry, NCZ could provide a useful wildlife contraception tool for waterfowl, particularly urban geese. We tested the absorption of NCZ in chickens (Gallus gallus), mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) gavaged with 8.4 mg of NCZ/kg per bird each day for 8 d. Plasma levels of 4,4′-dinitrocarbanilide (DNC) differed significantly among species. Peak plasma …

A Comparison Of Three Trap Designs For Capturing Brown Treesnakes On Guam, Daniel S. Vice, Richard M. Engeman, Diane L. Vice Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Three Trap Designs For Capturing Brown Treesnakes On Guam, Daniel S. Vice, Richard M. Engeman, Diane L. Vice

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The accidental introduction of the brown treesnake (Boiga irregularis) to Guam has resulted in the extirpation of most native terrestrial vertebrates on the island, thousands of power outages, and significant ecological changes. In addition, Guam now serves as a source population for the dispersal of snakes to other islands. Control of the brown treesnake is dependent upon the use of traps in a variety of settings, including port environments and in forested habitat A variety of snake traps have been used on Guam; most consist of a modified crawfish or minnow trap, housing a live mouse that serves as a …

Potential Consequences Of The Coqui Frog Invasion In Hawaii, Karen H. Beard, William C. Pitt Jan 2005

Potential Consequences Of The Coqui Frog Invasion In Hawaii, Karen H. Beard, William C. Pitt

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The Puerto Rican frog, Eleutherodactylus coqui , has invaded Hawaii and has negatively impacted the state’s multimillion dollar floriculture, nursery and tourist industries; however, little is known about the ecological consequences of the invasion. Using data from Puerto Rico and Hawaii, the authors summarize the potential consequences of the invasion and describe future research needs. It could be predicted that the coqui would reduce the abundance of Hawaii’s endemic invertebrates. However, data suggest that coquis are mostly consuming non-native invertebrates, and not invertebrate pests, such as mosquitoes and termites. Endemic invertebrates are likely to represent a portion of the coqui …

Transformation Of Maize With The P1 Transcription Factor Directs Production Of Silk Maysin, A Corn Earworm Resistance Factor, In Concordance With A Hierarchy Of Floral Organ Pigmentation, Suzy M. Cocciolone, Dan Nettleton, Maurice E. Snook, Thomas Peterson Jan 2005

Snook, Thomas Peterson

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The maize p1 gene encodes an R2R3-MYB transcription factor that controls the biosynthesis of red flavonoid pigments in floral tissues of the maize plant. Genetic and quantitative trait locus analyses have also associated the p1 gene with the synthesis of maysin, a flavone glycoside from maize silks that confers natural resistance to corn earworm. Here, we show directly that the p1 gene induces maysin accumulation in silk tissues. Transformation of maize plants that had low or no silk maysin with p1 transgenes elevated silk maysin concentrations to levels sufficient for corn earworm abiosis. The p1 transgenes also conferred red pigment …

Insect Fragments In Flour: Relationship To Lesser Grain Borer (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Infestation Level In Wheat And Rapid Detection Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy, Joel Perez-Mendoza, James E. Throne, Elizabeth B. Maghirang, Floyd E. Dowell, James E. Baker

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We determined that the number of insect fragments, quantified using the standard flotation method, in flour milled from wheat infested with larvae, pupae, or preemergent adults of the lesser grain borer, Rhyzopertha dominica (F.), was proportional to infestation level. Wheat infested with a single preemergent adult contributed 28 and 10X as many fragments as wheat infested with a single larva or pupa, respectively. Using regression models that were developed from these data, we predicted that the maximum infestation level that would result in flour with fragment counts below the Food and Drug Administration defect action level (75 fragments/50 g of …
