A Free-Market Environmentalist Approach To Genetically Engineered Foods, Christie Laporte, Walter Block Jan 2005

A Free-Market Environmentalist Approach To Genetically Engineered Foods, Christie Laporte, Walter Block

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Although great numbers of the world's population still suffer from starvation, the possibility for genetically engineered foods to alleviate the problem creates great controversy. The authors address common concerns raised by anti-market opponents of the genetically engineered food industry and offer free-market approaches to the apparent dilemma. While such opponents always promote government intervention to alleviate the possible negative outcomes to the genetically engineered food solution, the authors illustrate the market's aptitude and methods by which it could prevail over the still existing starvation problem in the absence of any government intervention.;The paper also reinforces that the market is a …

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson Jan 2005

Theology: Also (Green) Religious Experience Seeking Understanding, Thomas Hughson

Theology Faculty Research and Publications

Religious experience in contemporary theological epistemology is a theme broad enough to allow for many approaches. This essay grants the concept of 'religious experience' tentative validity, subject to later qualification. The actual experience explored will be a 'green' experience of non-human nature that many Christians have in common with many non-Christians. The first section describes it in a general way, while the second probes its character as a possible 'religious experience'. Then, a third section begins to explore its theological significance. A conclusion emphasizes the essential, dynamic partnership between theological method and non-methodical elements, such as religious experiences in general …

Subjective Decisionmaking And Unconscious Discrimination, Melissa Hart Jan 2005

Subjective Decisionmaking And Unconscious Discrimination, Melissa Hart

Publications

Unconscious bias is widely recognized as the most pervasive barrier to equal employment opportunity for minorities and women in the workplace today and yet many argue that federal laws prohibiting discrimination do not prohibit unconscious discrimination. This article argues that the law does in fact provide some redress for unconscious discrimination. Title VII may not be a perfect method for attacking unconscious bias, but it is a mistake to assume that it is without potential. The article challenges the assumption commonly held by judges that a finding of discrimination must be preceded by the belief that an employer is lying …

Context: Short-term strict immobilization of the arm using a cast enhances recovery of muscle function after eccentric exercise. Objective: To determine if placing one arm in a sling (‘‘light’’ immobilization) for 4 days after eccentric exercise of the elbow flexor muscles would reduce muscle soreness and enhance recovery compared with the exercised but not immobilized contralateral arm. Design: Subjects performed 10 sets of 6 maximal isokinetic (90·s 1) eccentric actions of the elbow flexors of each arm ona Cybex dynamometer, separated by 2 weeks. Setting: University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants: Ten healthy subjects (5 menand 5 women) with no …

Common Versus Uncommon Causes Of Dementia, Nicola Lautenschlager, Ralph Martins Jan 2005

Common Versus Uncommon Causes Of Dementia, Nicola Lautenschlager, Ralph Martins

Research outputs pre 2011

When patients present with a dementia syndrome at a young age, the experienced clinician will automatically include uncommon dementias in the diagnostic considerations, as familial uncommon dementias due to genetic mutations frequently present as early-onset dementias. This paper highlights why uncommon dementias due to genetic mutations, although marginal in terms of prevalence numbers in the total population, are of significance in the quest to unravel the underlying cause of common dementias such as Alzheimer's disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementias (FTD) and vascular dementia (VaD).

Developing A Framework Of Training For The Older Small Business Owner : Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Julia Turner Jan 2005

Developing A Framework Of Training For The Older Small Business Owner : Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Julia Turner

Research outputs pre 2011

This study was conducted as a result of the critical issue of the ageing population and the implications this will have on the workforce. An employment option for older workers is to become self-employed and to start their own small businesses, rather than to continue working in mainstream employment, which becomes increasing difficult as employees age. The option of self-employment may be a viable option for older people as uncertainty of employment tenure in mainstream employment continues to increases over time and is a way to utilise work skills and competencies that have been acquired over years of work experience. …

This artwork was begun when I entered the doctoral program at CAiNA (Centre of Advanced Inquiry Into the Interactive Arts) in 1997, and was completed in 1998. The work Ephemere is grounded in a very personal vision, developed over more than 25 years of artistic practice, including, most significantly, painting. Ephemere follows on its predecessor Osmose, and as such, Is a continuation of …

Consistency In Context‐Specific Measures Of Shyness And Boldness In Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Alexander D.M. Wilson, E. D. Stevens Jan 2005

Consistency In Context‐Specific Measures Of Shyness And Boldness In Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus Mykiss, Alexander D.M. Wilson, E. D. Stevens

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

AbstractShyness and boldness has been considered a fundamental axis of human behavioural variation. At the extreme ends of this behavioural continuum subjects vary from being bold and assertive to shy and timid. Analogous patterns of individual variation have been noted in a number of species including fish. There has been debate on the nature of this continuum as to whether it depends on context. That is, whether it is domain‐general (as in humans), or context‐specific. The purpose of our study was to test if shyness and boldness depends on context in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss and to this end we …

To that end the products are being developed as properly formed SCORM compliant IMS content packages. This paper discusses issues associated with the design of online resources characterised by quality learning designs and their subsequent redevelopment as IMS content packages.

Searching For The Semantic Boundaries Of The Japanese Colour Term 'Ao', Francis Conlan Jan 2005

Searching For The Semantic Boundaries Of The Japanese Colour Term 'Ao', Francis Conlan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The Japanese language has a colour term, 'ao' (or 'aoi'), which is usually referred to in bilingual dictionaries as being the equivalent of English 'blue'. Very often, however, it is used to describe things which English speakers would describe as being green. Granny Smith apples are 'ao', so are all Westerners' eyes, regardless of whether they would be described as being 'blue' or 'green' in English. The sky and the sea are prototypically 'ao', but this term is also used to describe lawns, forests, traffic lights and unripe tomatoes. What, then, do Japanese native speakers (henceforth JNS) understand by this …

The Semiotics Of Visible Face Make-Up: The Masks Women Wear, Madeleine Ogilvie Jan 2005

The Semiotics Of Visible Face Make-Up: The Masks Women Wear, Madeleine Ogilvie

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This dissertation explores the `sign' of visible face make-up and examines how women consume appearance in everyday life in contemporary Australia. Using a semiotic framework, it presents a novel new method for interpreting and gaining increased meaning into an everyday consumption phenomenon. The purpose of the study is to gain insights into why women wear make-up. It seeks to provide understanding of what this medium signifies to women and what the `sign' of make-up symbolises to the female individual. It explores how visible face make-up affects the way women consume appearance in everyday life, how they feel about themselves, and …

Implementing Best Practice Protocols For Occupational Hygiene Monitoring, Hayden Wing Jan 2005

Implementing Best Practice Protocols For Occupational Hygiene Monitoring, Hayden Wing

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis outlines the results of an occupational hygiene monitoring program implemented at Minara Resources' Murrin Murrin mine site. The research was conducted as part of a collaborative agreement between Edith Cowan University and Minara Resources, the title of which was "Establishing best practice protocols in the management of occupational and environmental health in a high risk mining and ore processing environment". To form the basis of this research it was hypothesised that chemical hazards had not been adequately identified, that existing occupational hygiene monitoring programs did not adequately quantify employee exposures to these hazards, and that the implementation of …

Manure From Grazing Cattle: Effects On Soil Microbial Communities And Soil Quality In Northern West Virginia Pastures., Yovita Sutanto Jan 2005

Manure From Grazing Cattle: Effects On Soil Microbial Communities And Soil Quality In Northern West Virginia Pastures., Yovita Sutanto

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Upland pastures in West Virginia receive low-input management. The effect of manure addition to upland pasture soils was measured with a variety of biological indicators such as soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), hot water extractable carbon (HWC), potentially mineralizable nitrogen (PMN) and soil CO2 efflux. The effect of manure was found to be short-lived and most profound in soil surface Microbial diversity of pasture soil was examined using community level physiological profiles (CLPP) and molecular characterization of 16S ribosomal RNA genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Culture-independent and culture-dependent methods for molecular characterization of …

The focus of this work was on the design and implementation of a web based forensic information management system for the West Virginia State Police Forensics Laboratory (WVSPFL). The software tool enables law enforcement agents to submit crime information to the Forensic Laboratory via a secure Internet connection. The tool also enables each of the nine units of WVSPFL to process the information electronically. Online electronic forms were created to mirror the existing paper based forms, making the transition easier. The existing processes were standardized and streamlined, there by minimizing information inconsistency. The crime information once gathered is automatically uploaded …
