Conceptualization And Cognitive Relativism On Result In Mandarin Chinese: The Case Study Of Mandarin Chinese Bǎ Construction Using A Cognitive And Centering Approach, Jin Huei Enya Dai

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This work adopts Langacker's cognitive grammar approach and addresses the cognitive significance of result in Mandarin Chinese, as expressed in resultant construals in the Mandarin Chinese bă construction: X bă Y Z. I identify the semantic prime of result in Mandarin Chinese, and discuss its role in the resultative verbal compound construction, the V-de-EXT resultative construction, and the bèi construction, with particular focus on the bă construction. I provide evidence for the resultant nature of segment Z in the bă construction in (1) aspectual markers, (2) resultative suffixes, (3) resultative verbal compounds, (4) locative complements, (5) directional complements, (6) the …

Temporal And Spatial Harvest Patterns Of River Otter In Louisiana And Its Potential Use As A Bioindicator Species Of Water Quality, Daniel Gustavo Scognamillo Jan 2005

Temporal And Spatial Harvest Patterns Of River Otter In Louisiana And Its Potential Use As A Bioindicator Species Of Water Quality, Daniel Gustavo Scognamillo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Louisiana is the leading state in number of river otters used in reintroduction programs in other states and in the production of pelts. However, habitat loss and degradation have prompted concern about the status of otter populations. This dissertation undertakes a spatial and temporal analysis of river otter harvest activity and examines environmental factors related to monitoring mercury levels in streams in Louisiana. Harvest data for 1957-2004 were analyzed to identify spatial and temporal trends in otter harvest activity. Changes have occurred in the last 20 years in the spatial dynamics of otter harvest in Louisiana, these include an increasing …

High Temperature Stress Responses Of Salvia Splendens And Viola X Wittrockiana, Seenivasan Natarajan Jan 2005

High Temperature Stress Responses Of Salvia Splendens And Viola X Wittrockiana, Seenivasan Natarajan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

One of the greatest impediments affecting growth and development of bedding plants is high temperature stress. The deleterious effects of high temperature stress are the most pronounced during plug transplant and/or during the transition period from the nursery to the landscape. High temperature stress responses were investigated in Salvia splendens and Viola x wittrockiana to determine the morphological and physiological mechanism associated with the heat tolerance. Two genotypes for each species were used; a heat tolerant Vista and a heat sensitive Sizzler cultivar of salvia and Crystal Bowl Purple (CBP) a heat tolerant and Majestic Giant Red (MGR) a heat …

This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley Jan 2005

This Is What I Meant When I Told You, Ryan David O'Malley

LSU Master's Theses

THIS IS WHAT I MEANT WHEN I TOLD YOU is a quest to visually decipher the complexities of "self." The goal is to form a relationship of honesty between my mind and my hand, the art and the viewer. The work investigates reoccurring ideas, threaded through each day, in order to create narratives based on the immediacy of emotion, and the struggle between self-realization and uncertainty. Or as one commented during my show, "A celebration of the dark side of life."

Master Planning Communities With Wildlife In Mind, Helen A. Peebles Jan 2005

Master Planning Communities With Wildlife In Mind, Helen A. Peebles

LSU Master's Theses

Master-planned communities can be designed for the protection of wildlife while providing an aesthetically pleasing, eco-friendly, and affordable community for people. This study was conceived from a background of academic studies in plant biology, forestry, and landscape architecture, and a desire to rescue wildlife habitat from the encroachment of urban sprawl. A variety of books and periodicals were consulted, along with a few web sites. The primary threats to wildlife habitat are habitat fragmentation, pollution, and exotic invasive species of plants, animals, insects, and diseases. Many aspects of planning are addressed, including wildlife corridors, site selection, connecting habitat patches, and …

Effects Of Body Size On Goose Behavior: Lesser Snow Goose And Ross's Goose, Jon Einar Jonsson Jan 2005

Effects Of Body Size On Goose Behavior: Lesser Snow Goose And Ross's Goose, Jon Einar Jonsson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Body size is highly variable among geese, both at intra- and interspecific levels. Interspecific variation in several behaviors has been attributed to differences in body size in geese: incubation constancy, tendency to maintain family units, and time spent foraging. Body size has important physiological implications for birds, mostly because mass-specific metabolic rate is greater for birds of smaller mass. The Body-size Hypothesis predicts that smaller species deplete their energy reserves at relatively faster rates than do larger species. Hypotheses and conclusions concerning effects of body size on waterfowl behavior often are based on comparisons of species that confront different climates, …

Effect Of Chromium Propionate And Fat Source On Growth, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality In Swine And The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth And Carcass Traits In Broilers, Ashunti Ria Jackson Jan 2005

Effect Of Chromium Propionate And Fat Source On Growth, Carcass Traits, And Meat Quality In Swine And The Effect Of Chromium Propionate On Growth And Carcass Traits In Broilers, Ashunti Ria Jackson

LSU Master's Theses

Three experiments were conducted to determine the effects of the chromium propionate (CrProp) in swine and poultry diets. Two broiler experiments, each utilizing 1,460 Ross X Ross broilers, were conducted to evaluate the effects of 0, 200, 400, or 800 ppb CrProp on growth performance and carcass traits in 0 to 42 and 0 to 49 d-old broilers. In Exp. 1, 400 ppb Cr decreased (P < 0.10) ADG and G:F in the grower phase, but mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 ppb or 800 ppb Cr. In the finisher phase, G:F was increased (P < 0.10) in broilers fed all dietary levels of Cr, and mortality was reduced (P < 0.10) in broilers fed 200 and 400 ppb Cr. Chromium did not affect the overall growth data or carcass traits. In Exp. 2, CrProp did not affect growth performance. The results indicated that Cr as CrProp improved G:F in the later phases of growth and reduced mortality in Exp. 1 but not in Exp. 2. In Exp. 3, 108 crossbred Yorkshire gilts were used to examine the effects of 0 or 200 ppb CrProp on iodine value, fatty acid profile of fat, growth, carcass traits, and pork quality from gilts fed tallow or choice white grease (CWG). Chromium decreased (P < 0.03) 10th rib back fat and increased (P < 0.02) percent muscle. Gain:feed was increased (P < 0.003) and ADFI decreased by fat addition. Fat increased hot carcass weight (P < 0.07) and dressing percent (P < 0.02). Average back fat, 9th rib CL, and total loss were decreased (P = 0.02 to 0.04) by tallow. Belly width was increased (P < 0.08) by tallow, but belly bending on both the teatline and scribe side were increased (P = 0.004 to 0.01) by CWG. Iodine values on belly and loin samples were increased (P < 0.001) by CWG. Overall, Cr affected BF and percent muscle and the inclusion of tallow decreased (P = 0.03 to 0.09) belly and loin iodine value further than CWG or no added fat.

The Psychosocial Vulnerability Model Of Hostility As A Predictor Of Coronary Heart Disease, Karen Grothe Jan 2005

The Psychosocial Vulnerability Model Of Hostility As A Predictor Of Coronary Heart Disease, Karen Grothe

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the number one killer for both men and women in the United States today. African Americans are particularly at risk, due to higher prevalence rates and mortality related to CHD (American Heart Association, 2003). Less than half of the new cases of CHD can be predicted with known risk factors (tobacco use, obesity, hypertension), which suggests the possible influence of personality or additional behavioral factors. Hostility is a psychological variable that has been consistently related to health outcomes, particularly to CHD. While the exact mechanism linking hostility to health is currently unknown, a psychosocial vulnerability …

Alice's Shadow: Childhood And Agency In Lewis Carroll's Photography, Illustrations, And Alice Texts, R. Nichole Rougeau Jan 2005

Alice's Shadow: Childhood And Agency In Lewis Carroll's Photography, Illustrations, And Alice Texts, R. Nichole Rougeau

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The nineteenth century marks the emergence of a new literary market directed at the entertainment of children. However, a dichotomy exists concerning the image of childhood. Adults tended to idolize childhood in literature to reflect on their own lives ignoring the needs of children to possess an identity of their own. Essentially children are shadows of adults. Examinations of the shadows of childhood—children as shadows of adults, children shadowed by adults, the shadows as identifying children, and the shadows children themselves cast—lead to a discussion of agency over childhood. Lewis Carroll, entering this new literary market with his Alice series, …

Erik Satie's Ballet Parade: An Arrangement For Woodwind Quintet And Percussion With Historical Summary, Tracy A. Doyle

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Erik Satie's ballet Parade was a historical collaboration between several of the leading artistic minds of the early twentieth century: Erik Satie, Jean Cocteau, Pablo Picasso, Léonide Massine, and Serge Diaghilev. Satie's writing for winds and percussion lends itself to an arrangement for woodwind quintet and percussion; an arrangement that keeps the spirit and essence of the work intact. This study includes a historical summary of the ballet Parade and an arrangement of the music from the ballet for woodwind quintet and percussion.

Sacred Trust: The Voluntary Removal And Reburial Of Human Remains From A Historic Cemetery In Louisiana, Christian Williamson

LSU Master's Theses

Members of the Randolph family, a prominent plantation family that has lived in Louisiana since the late eighteenth century, contacted a team of anthropologists from Louisiana State University to help recover thirteen individuals from St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bayou Goula, Louisiana. The cemetery had been abandoned since 1970, its graves overgrown with weeds and desecrated by vandals. Of the thirteen individuals recovered, three sets of remains did not have associated grave markers. These three were taken back to the lab and analyzed using standard forensic procedures. Documentary research on the history of the cemetery, the once associated church, and the …

Relating Suspended Solids And Phosphorus In Surface Water Runoff From Agricultural Soils To Soil Salinity Measurements, Theophilus Kene Udeigwe

LSU Master's Theses

Runoff of sediments and nutrients, particularly phosphorus (P) from agricultural fields is considered as one of the main causes of water quality impairment. Very little research has been done on relating suspended solids in runoff to soil test information. This two-part study was aimed at:1) evaluating the relationship between total suspended solids (TSS), P forms in runoff, and soil salinity measurements, particularly electrical conductivity (EC), and 2) establishing the relationships between runoff P forms and the various soil test P measures, across a variety of selected Louisiana calcareous and acid soils. In the first part of the study, five Louisiana …

The Establishment, Expansion And Ecosystem Effects Of Phragmites Australis, An Invasive Species In Coastal Louisiana, Lee Ellis Stanton Jan 2005

The Establishment, Expansion And Ecosystem Effects Of Phragmites Australis, An Invasive Species In Coastal Louisiana, Lee Ellis Stanton

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

As biological invasions have become a common phenomenon throughout the world, ecologists have intensified efforts to understand why natural communities are susceptible to invasion. Invading species can cause shifts in community structure that result in irreversible changes to ecosystem function. Phragmites australis has rapidly spread in North American coastal wetlands during the past 50 years and has become a dominant feature in Northern Gulf of Mexico brackish marshes. The rate at which Phragmites is spreading or the mechanisms controlling its establishment in these marshes is unknown. My research objectives were to: (1) determine the spatial and temporal patterns of Phragmites …

Spalding Gray And The Slippery Slope Of Confessional Performance, David Price Terry Jan 2005

Spalding Gray And The Slippery Slope Of Confessional Performance, David Price Terry

LSU Master's Theses

Beyond Spalding Gray’s iconic position as a confessional performer, he serves as a representative character for a culture increasingly consumed with both self-reflection and self- disclosure, where confessional speech is understood as somehow more “authentic” or “pure” than other forms of discourse. I argue that confession is a performative, not a constative utterance (a doing not a saying) and that it is a productive not a libratory act; it does not free an already existing self, but produces a new self in the act of performance. Consequently, though the confessional performance style typified by Gray can be aesthetically compelling for …

Thirty-nine ejaculates from 8 Holstein bulls were collected. Straws of semen (n=750) were distributed among dairies in three states. Ten straws per ejaculate were sent to Louisiana State University (LSU) Dairy Improvement Center for conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis. Spermatozoal DNA was extracted and PCR analysis was done using one primer set amplifying a single copy 125 base pair (bp) section of the Bos taurus factor IX (Christmas factor) precursor (found on the X chromosome) and another primer set amplifying a single copy section of the Bos taurus sex determining region Y protein (SRY) gene (found on the Y …

The Everywhere Chronicles, Jamie Brownell Baldridge Jan 2005

The Everywhere Chronicles, Jamie Brownell Baldridge

LSU Master's Theses

The Everywhere Chronicles is a body of work that has been perambulating through my mind since the halcyon days of childhood. It is not intended as any sort of catharsis, metaphorical or otherwise, nor is it any forum of self discovery, accidental or intentional. These Chronicles are quite simply a journey into imagination, an exercise in "what ifs?". They confront the theory that Columbus was actually on a munchies run to an Indian Takeaway in Ipswich and simply took a wrong turn at the Antilles, and that the Lost City of Atlantis is alive and well somewhere outside of Duluth …

Using The Biodatamation Strategy To Learn Introductory College Biology: Value-Added Effects On Selected Students' Conceptual Understanding And Conceptual Integration Of The Processes Of Photosynthesis And Celluar Respiration, Jewel Jurovich Reuter

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this exploratory research was to study how students learn photosynthesis and cellular respiration and to determine the value added to the student's learning by each of the three technology-scaffolded learning strategy components (animated concept presentations and WebQuest-style activities, data collection, and student-constructed animations) of the BioDatamation™ (BDM) Program. BDM learning strategies utilized the Theory of Interacting Visual Fields™ (TIVF) (Reuter & Wandersee, 2002a, 2002b; 2003a, 2003b) which holds that meaningful knowledge is hierarchically constructed using the past, present, and future visual fields, with visual metacognitive components that are derived from the principles of Visual Behavior (Jones,1995), Human …

Viral Rna Elements And Host Genes Affecting Rna Recombination In Tombusviruses, Chi-Ping Cheng Jan 2005

Viral Rna Elements And Host Genes Affecting Rna Recombination In Tombusviruses, Chi-Ping Cheng

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

RNA recombination is a major factor driving viral evolution and contributing to new disease outbreaks. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of RNA recombination can help scientists to develop longer lasting antiviral strategies. Tombusviruses are one of the best model RNA viruses to study RNA virus recombination. My goals were to dissect the mechanism of tombusviral RNA recombination. To do so, in my thesis, I describe my results on the roles of (i) the viral replicase and the viral RNA templates; and (ii) the effect of host factors on tombusvirus recombination events. To study the mechanism of RNA recombination without the influence …

Rights Of Humans, Rights Of States: The Academic Legacy Of St. George Tucker In Nineteenth-Century Virginia, Chad Vanderford Jan 2005

Rights Of Humans, Rights Of States: The Academic Legacy Of St. George Tucker In Nineteenth-Century Virginia, Chad Vanderford

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

College professors in the nineteenth-century South lavished a great deal of attention on the issues of slavery and constitutionalism, and they paid careful attention to the connections between these issues and the idea of natural rights. In this dissertation I offer an analysis of the lives and writings of three generations of college professors in nineteenth-century Virginia, focusing especially on St. George Tucker and his descendants. As a contemporary of Thomas Jefferson and as a delegate to the Annapolis convention, Tucker can rightly be considered as one of the founding fathers. But he is best known for inaugurating the academic …

In Vitro And In Vivo Anti-Angiogenic Activities Of Milk Sphingolipids, Rishipal Rastrapal Bansode

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Anti-angiogenic therapies aimed at halting new blood vessel formation are now being extensively studied as inhibitors of excessive angiogenesis. Conversely, compounds with ability to stimulate angiogenesis are being considered as a therapeutic approach for insufficient angiogenesis. Food-borne bioactive compounds such as genistein, resveratrol, curcumin, the Bowman-Birk inhibitor, and catechins are being potentially established as good candidates for angioprevention. The aim of our study was to determine the anti-or pro-angiogenic activity of milk-based glycosphingolipids such as C6-ceramide (Cer), Sphingomyelin (SPM) and Glucosylceramide (GluCer), in vitro, using breast cancer (MCF-7), colon cancer (Caco-2) and prostate cancer (DU-145) cell-lines, on angiogenic factors such …

A total of 4,968 collections were processed, and 48,667 ceratopogonids were collected from 20 November, 2002 through 25 November, 2004. Three genera of ceratopogonids (Forcipomyia Meigen, Atrichopogon Kieffer, and Culicoides Latrielle) and a total of 18 species of the genus Culicoides were identified. Ceratopogonids had distinctive spring and fall population peaks. Ceratopogonids were collected in every month during the study, with the exception of February 2004. These results suggest that certain species of Culicoides may …

Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg Jan 2005

Ancient Maya Music Now With Sound, Cameron Hideo Bourg

LSU Master's Theses

The subject of Maya music is by no means a new field of study for Hispanic cultural scholars or Mesoamerican anthropologists. For example, the archeological reports of Dr. Norman Hammond and Dr. Paul Healy have greatly increased the information in this area of study. The instrumentation utilized by ancient Maya musicians and the raw materials that were the essence of their production have been the major themes in these previous publications. However, these perspectives exclude the sound of music and aspects of ancient Maya society. This thesis has been planned to examine ancient Maya music according to archaeology, society and …

Dental Evidence For Division Of Labor Among The Prehistoric Ipiutak And Tigara Of Point Hope, Alaska, Felicia Madimenos Jan 2005

Dental Evidence For Division Of Labor Among The Prehistoric Ipiutak And Tigara Of Point Hope, Alaska, Felicia Madimenos

LSU Master's Theses

Among archaeological specimens, teeth can provide insight into the behaviors and cultural practices of a population. Inuit specimens are ideal for studying dentition because of the unique way teeth are used as tools. The prehistoric Ipiutak (ca.100 B.C. – A.D. 500) and Tigara (ca. A.D. 900 –1700) of Point Hope, Alaska, represent two environmentally similar, although culturally and temporally different, populations. Based on associated archaeological finds, the Ipiutak do not represent a whaling culture. Instead, they focused on hunting smaller sea mammals and caribou. Conversely, the Tigara represent a typical Inuit whaling culture. Whaling cultures depend on a distinct division …

Comparative Studies Of Sperm Cryopreservation Of Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Qiaoxiang Dong Jan 2005

Comparative Studies Of Sperm Cryopreservation Of Diploid And Tetraploid Pacific Oysters, Qiaoxiang Dong

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation addressed comparative studies of sperm cryopreservation of diploid and tetraploid Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, with an emphasis on the development of standardized and optimized protocols. This includes comparative ultrastructural differences between sperm from diploid and tetraploid oysters, methods for the rapid estimation of sperm concentration, optimization of cryopreservation, and evaluation of the mechanisms for sperm agglutination (formation of clumps or elongated "noodles") in thawed samples. Currently, cryopreserved sperm has not been commercialized in any aquatic species, and standardization and optimization could greatly benefit the potential commercialization of its use. In oysters specifically, cryopreserved sperm from tetraploids would facilitate …

Nitrate Reduction And Methane Formation As Influenced By Iron-Centered Intermediate Redox Processes In Rice Soils, Bin Huang Jan 2005

Nitrate Reduction And Methane Formation As Influenced By Iron-Centered Intermediate Redox Processes In Rice Soils, Bin Huang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Rice fields are a major source of the greenhouse gases methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and contribute to nitrate (NO3-) pollution in waters. Ferric iron (Fe3+) and manganic manganese (Mn4+) are two intermediate alternative electron acceptors (AEAs) capable of regeneration in freshwater soils. In this investigation, the influences of iron-centered intermediate redox processes on NO3- reduction and CH4 formation in rice soils were studied using soil slurries, soil columns, and potted rice. Reduction of Fe3+-centered intermediate AEAs was mainly mediated by obligate anaerobes …

Chorale And Canon In Alfred Schnittke's Fourth String Quartet, Aaminah Durrani Jan 2005

Chorale And Canon In Alfred Schnittke's Fourth String Quartet, Aaminah Durrani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Alfred Schnittke's String Quartet No. 4 (1989) is a passionate essay, full of fervor and anguish expressed through an eloquent and highly refined style. Essential to this style are the counterpoised textures of chorale and canon. Not only does the coherence of the Quartet's expansive formal design rest largely on the effective deployment of chorale and canon, but these devices are the very engines that drive Schnittke's musical argument. Perhaps the most stunning event of the Fourth Quartet occurs in the finale. In the closing moments of this long work, Schnittke replaces the dissonant and dynamic fury of the fortissimo …

Marie Darrieussecq Et Ses Truismes, Carla Bota Jan 2005

Marie Darrieussecq Et Ses Truismes, Carla Bota

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between language and themes in Marie Darrieussecq's novel Truismes. Having as its core the theme of metamorphosis, Truismes tells the story of a young woman who after passing through a multitude of experiences transforms into a pig. The character's journey through the metamorphosis is marked by excesses. The excess manifests itself at all levels: in the physical and mental transformation of the female character, in the description of the secondary characters, in the composition of the environment that sustains the narration, and ultimately in the language. By using Julia Kristeva's …
