Amino Acid Requirements And Low Crude Protein, Amino Acid Supplemented Diets For Swine And Poultry, Dustin Wade Dean

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to determine requirements for amino acids that limit the use of crystalline amino acids, to determine the effects of reducing crude protein, and to evaluate the problems associated with low crude protein diets for swine and poultry. Four experiments were conducted to determine the Lys and sulfur amino acid requirements for 5- to 10-kg pigs. The results of these experiments suggest pigs in this weight range require a diet containing 1.40% true digestible (TD) Lys and the ratio of sulfur amino acids to Lys is not greater than 0.54. Two experiments were conducted to …

Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Kamalesh Achanta Jan 2005

Characteristics Of Reduced Fat Milks As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Kamalesh Achanta

LSU Master's Theses

Folic acid plays an important role in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and anencephaly, heart defects, facial clefts, urinary abnormalities and limb deficiencies. Milk and milk products serve as a potential source for folic acid fortification due to the presence of folate binding proteins which seem to be involved in the folate bioavailability. Though milk is a not a good source of folic acid, fortification could help in the prevention of the above mentioned defects. The objective of this study was to examine the physico-chemical characteristics of reduced fat milks fortified with folic acid. Reduced …

Recovering Ancient Ritual And The Theatre Of The Apache: A Journey Through The False Consciousness Of Western Theatre History, Marla Kathleen Dean Jan 2005

Recovering Ancient Ritual And The Theatre Of The Apache: A Journey Through The False Consciousness Of Western Theatre History, Marla Kathleen Dean

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines past cultural influences that have shaped theatre historians' perception of ancient Greek and contemporary Native American performance. It suggests that through a recognition of these influences, which have long tempered the Western narrative of theatre, ancient and Indigenous performance can be reviewed as similar forms of a lived exchange. The study tracks the formation of certain beliefs and assumptions within performance history through Roman, early Christian and Renaissance cultural identities. It notes the misrepresentation of oral and popular theatre within theatrical scholarship through its reliance upon the written remains of the ruling classes and confronts the notion …

Marching Masters: Slavery, Race, And The Confederate Army, 1861-1865, Colin Edward Woodward Jan 2005

Marching Masters: Slavery, Race, And The Confederate Army, 1861-1865, Colin Edward Woodward

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Many historians have examined the Civil War soldier, but few scholars have explored the racial attitudes and policies of the Confederate army. Although Southern men did not fight for slavery alone, the defense of the peculiar institution, and the racial control they believed it assured, united rebels in their support of the Confederacy and the war effort. Amid the destruction of the Civil War, slavery became more important than ever for men battling Yankee armies. The war, nevertheless, tested Confederate soldiers’ idealized view of human bondage. Federal armies wrecked havoc on masters’ farms and plantations, seized hundreds of thousands of …

Matrix Metalloproteinase 3, Matrix Metalloproteinase 13, And Tissue Inhibitor Of Metalloproteinase 1 Concentrations In Normal And Naturally-Occurring Osteoarthritic Canine Stifles, Blaine Allen Burkert

LSU Master's Theses

Osteoarthritis is arguably the most common ailment in both dogs and people in the developed World. Treatment for osteoarthritis is currently symptomatic. Development of therapies designed at stopping the progression of osteoarthritis, require a method of evaluating efficacy. Objective analysis by measuring joint metabolism via clinical trials of the cross-over design is currently not possible with the methods utilized. Extracellular matrix degradation is a hallmark of osteoarthritis. The matrix metalloproteinases are major degradative enzymes. There are currently no commercially available assays to measure canine matrix metalloproteinases. Human and canine matrix metalloproteinases are highly homologous. The use of antibodies and assays …

Development And Characterization Of Antimicrobial Edible Films From Crawfish Chitosan, Kandasamy Nadarajah Jan 2005

Development And Characterization Of Antimicrobial Edible Films From Crawfish Chitosan, Kandasamy Nadarajah

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Inherent antibacterial/antifungal properties and film-forming ability of chitosan make it ideal for use as a biodegradable antimicrobial packaging material. This study was attempted to develop antimicrobial films from crawfish chitosan. Traditional chitosan production involves: deproteinization (DP), demineralization (DM), decolorization (DC), and deacetylation (DA). Modification of chitosan production affects film properties. Effects of chitosan production protocols, film-casting solvents, and plasticizer contents on physicochemical, mechanical and antibacterial properties were investigated. Four chitosans were prepared from traditional (DPMCA) and modified processes [excluding either DP, DC or both DP and DC]. Chitosan (1%w/v) was dissolved in 1% acetic, ascorbic, citric, formic, lactic and/or malic …

Modulation Of Adipocyte Genes By Signal Transducers And Activators Of Transcription, Jessica C. Hogan Jan 2005

Modulation Of Adipocyte Genes By Signal Transducers And Activators Of Transcription, Jessica C. Hogan

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Members of the STAT transcription factor family are expressed in adipocytes, including STATs 1, 3, 5A, 5B, and 6. Although STATs 1 and 5 proteins are known to be induced during adipogenesis, the functions of these STATs in mature adipocytes are not known. Hence we have sought to identify adipocyte genes which are transcriptionally regulated by STATs to elucidate a role of these proteins in fat cells. We have characterized STAT binding sites in the promoters of four adipocyte genes, PPARγ2, LPL, FAS and C/EBPδ. PPARγ2 expression decreases in adipocytes following exposure to IFNγ, an activator of STAT1. IFNγ induces …

Common Sense Philosophy And Politics In America: John Witherspoon, James Mccosh, And William James, Scott Philip Segrest

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines the political significance of the two leading strains of common sense thought in the history of American philosophy—Scottish Common Sense and Pragmatism—as suggested in the writings of John Witherspoon and James McCosh in the Scottish Common Sense line, and of the more famous co-founder of Pragmatism, William James. These two strains of American common sense are placed in context of the larger Western common sense tradition. Each is shown to aim at finding a solid middle ground epistemologically between skeptical doubt and idealistic certitude that could serve as a stable basis for moral and political life. Witherspoon, …

Molluscan Taphonomy As A Proxy For Recognizing Fossil Seagrass Beds, Jill Suzanne Leonard-Pingel Jan 2005

Molluscan Taphonomy As A Proxy For Recognizing Fossil Seagrass Beds, Jill Suzanne Leonard-Pingel

LSU Master's Theses

Seagrass beds, important marine ecosystems both economically and environmentally, have a poor fossil record. As a result, little is known about the geographic distribution of seagrasses over historic and geologic time, or their abundance when unaltered by anthropogenic effects. The purpose of this study is to define a taphonomic signature unique to seagrass beds that can be used as a proxy for identifying the seagrass habitat in the fossil record. In order to develop this proxy, sediment samples from Recent seagrass and non-seagrass environments were collected, and the molluscan bioclasts from these samples were categorically ranked for the following taphonomic …

Glucose Transporter 2 Is Likely To Play A Role In The Brain Glucose Sensing, Bing Li Jan 2005

Glucose Transporter 2 Is Likely To Play A Role In The Brain Glucose Sensing, Bing Li

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

It has been proposed that the glucose sensing mechanism in the hypothalamus and hindbrain is similar to pancreatic â cells, and brain glucose sensing may be involved in the regulation of food intake. For the first part of the dissertation, it is proposed that molecules involved in â-cell glucose sensing, including glucokinase (GK), glucose transporter GLUT2, sulfonylurea receptor-1 (SUR1), glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R), and the feeding-related neuropeptide Y (NPY), are colocalized in specific areas in the hypothalamus and hindbrain. GK, GLUT2, SUR1, GLP-1R and NPY mRNA expression in ten discrete brain areas were quantified by real time RT-PCR, which will …

Development, Evaluation And Characterization Of Protein-Isoflavone Enriched Soymilk, Janette Ethel-Pessi Saidu Jan 2005

Development, Evaluation And Characterization Of Protein-Isoflavone Enriched Soymilk, Janette Ethel-Pessi Saidu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adequate provision of soy isoflavone and protein in soybean products is essential in meeting the soy health claim and the promotion of a healthy product. Commercial soymilks contain inadequate amounts of protein and isoflavone to meet the FDA recommended 25g and 40-50mg/day level, respectively, in 1-2 servings. This research study set out to investigate the possibility of producing a protein-isoflavone enriched (PIE) soymilk by incorporating soy germ in soymilk to provide the recommended FDA level in 1-2 servings. Three PIE soymilks containing 25 (SG25), 30 (SG30), and 35% (SG35) germ were prepared and compared to 100% whole soybean milk (WSB-control) …

Exile As Severance, Alexandru Boldor Jan 2005

Exile As Severance, Alexandru Boldor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Exile is a phenomenon probably as ancient as humanity itself, and one of the oldest topics in universal literature. The great majority of its variants (political, economical, social,) are founded on the idea of "forced displacement." Consequently, most often exile is reflected in literary creations in discourses dominated by a sentiment of loss. However, in some cases exile is not seen as a tragic event, but rather as an opportunity for intellectual growth - as attested by a number of authors who have chosen voluntarily to exile themselves. The rationale behind this occurrence is a mental process I called "severance." …

Access to this collection provided a rare opportunity to examine the attributes of a related group of commodity bag garments. In the second part of …

The Effects Of Aluminum Concentration On Growth Responses In Six Spartina Alterniflora Genotypes, Daniel Farrell Becker Jan 2005

The Effects Of Aluminum Concentration On Growth Responses In Six Spartina Alterniflora Genotypes, Daniel Farrell Becker

LSU Master's Theses

Elevated soluble aluminum concentrations can adversely affect plant growth. During a drought, wetland soils may experience higher than normal soluble aluminum due to the oxidation of metal sulfides and resulting decreases in pH, which mobilizes metallic cations. Louisiana coastal salt marshes were subject to a record-setting drought in the winter and spring of 2000 which was coincident with the die-off of large expanses of salt marsh, termed " brown marsh ". Spartina alterniflora was the primary plant species affected. However, because some individuals within large areas of die-off survived the brown marsh event, they may have been the more resistant …

V-Atpase Expression And Function In The Brine Shrimp, Artemia Franciscana: Role Of Proton Gradients In Anoxia-Induced Quiescence, Joseph Antonio Covi Jan 2005

V-Atpase Expression And Function In The Brine Shrimp, Artemia Franciscana: Role Of Proton Gradients In Anoxia-Induced Quiescence, Joseph Antonio Covi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Upon exposure to anoxia, encysted embryos of the brine shrimp, Artemia franciscana, enter a severely depressed metabolic state, the transition into which is facilitated in part by one of the largest intracellular acidifications ever reported for a eukaryotic organism. However, the endogenous origin of this pH shift remains largely unexplained. We hypothesize that the unexplained acidification is produced by a net flux of protons into the cytoplasm from compartments acidified by a V-type proton pump (V-ATPase) during aerobic development. Northern blots demonstrate expression of the V-ATPase subunit-B mRNA during early development, while Western blots demonstrate the expression of at …

New Methods To Assess Cotton Varietal Stability And Indentify Discriminating Environments, Sterling Brooks Blanche, Sr.

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Studies were conducted in 2001-2004 evaluating genotype by environment interactions in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). Genotype by Environment interactions were characterized using GGE Biplot for conventional cotton cultivars and their transgenic derivatives. Significant interactions existed for several non-target traits. Transgenic cultivars were taller, had greater height to node ratios, larger seed, and lower lint percentages. Transgenic cultivars containing the Bollgard gene yielded more than their conventional parents and STV4691B was the highest yielding, most stable cultivar. In 2002-2004, GGE Biplot was used to identify two levels (high/low) of discriminating locations for three distinct selection criteria. Crosses were made with parents …

Cryopreservation Of Reproductive Cells And Tissues, Guanglei Li Jan 2005

Cryopreservation Of Reproductive Cells And Tissues, Guanglei Li

LSU Master's Theses

Cryopreservation of reproductive cells and tissues is a useful technique to deliver intact genomes, maximize the distribution of favorable genes, control disease spread. It is widely applied to many fields such as biology, medicine, ecology and agriculture. To optimize the cryopreservation procedure, the biophysical responses of reproductive tissues at different cooling conditions and in different mediums must be clearly understood. Here we studied the biophysical response during freezing of: 1) bovine sperm frozen at a cooling rate of 20 ˚C/min in three media: without cryopreservation agents(CPAs), with 0.7 M glycerol, and with 0.7 M glycerol along with 1.5 mg/ml of …
